This was a fantastic movie, but I did have one complaint: what was with the art style? All the dwarves look like super wrinkly slightly deformed midgets.
My only wish is that Jim Henson would've been alive to work with Peter Jackson on this. Think of Dark Crystal imagination combined with Rankin/Bass, that would've been mind blowing O.O I'm thankfull they included the singing in the new one, the singing IS part of the story.
This was my intro to Tolkien and a very fond memory for me. I remember when I first saw the dragon and it was great to see since I was always a fan of dragons when I was a younger and still am today. The only other cartoon/movie that stood out so large in my childhood with this was Flight of Dragons. The Hobbit is my favorite of all the books from the LOTR set.
@ShinKyuubi I haven't been able to find Flight of Dragons since I rented it from Blockbusters on VHS! It's been a real pain since it was one of my favorite movies.
Currently re-reading the Hobbit, and after watching the 1977 adaption I am impressed how Rankin kept to the original text...Bravo the new movie had hard act to follow in this.
I knew the "That's What Bilbo Baggins Hates" song before I ever saw the cartoon.. my mom, rest in peace, used to sing it whenever I would help with dishes as a little kid.
They played this on the radio on a college station once. Not this song, but the whole record, if it is what it seems to be. If not, they played the movie and held a mic to it. And I circled the block until the end. Because I love this.
finally found down in the valley ha! ha! although in the cartoon it was more sung by elvish sounding voices. still, thank uf or posting this it is truly awesome and a nastaglic piece of my childhood (before mainstream LORT ;) )
@mcarlucci2 it is sad that some people outright hated this movie. i personally thought it was a good movie. especially if you want to get little kids into the series.
I know it's weird eh. I only recently learned there was a word for it, nastalgia. I was watching a little girl play at the doctors office, and I think I am going to invite friends over, just to play with lego and blocks on the ground. I'm like early 20's. haa, i know it sounds weird, but I don't want to be someone who sighs to young ones "Your only young once," regretfully and mournfully. I want to stay connected with children and with my infancy for ever.
@MrTheoriginalderek We all wonder that. But life goes on, you'll not be a kid forever, I'm 19, so my finished childhood is still a fresh memory. But we all grow old and die. but till them we enjoy life. Make yours a good one, cause it's one per customer and no refunds
hate to say it but bilbo looks like a pimp what with his stance and his pimp halbred (hes to cool to settle for a mere cane)

what this movie lacked in animation quality, it made up for in AMAZING artwork and voice acting.

I've known this poem since before I could read....there is a magic in that music, and it has moved through me as long as I can remember.

And it moves through me....
You feel the love of beautiful things.
To go and to see the mountains and the pine trees...
....to carry a sword instead of a walking stick.

Between the two of them, I think Rankin Bass got Dwarven music right on the mark... less so for the elves.

As amazing as Sir Ian McKellen was as Gandalf, this will always be Gandalf's voice and appearance to me.
