  • its wierd ive been trying to learn all three of the songs

  • Respect!! For performance AND taste!

  • So COOL!!!!!

  • Brilliant Stuff

  • The HP part was so epic

  • Legendary! I am blown away by how incredible this is! Ohhh man!

  • bravo ,la mano sinistra non si stanca mai impressionante

  • Play that same song!

  • That was ridiculously awesome!

  • The guy on the washboard really ruins this video for me.

  • percussious are annoying

  • not "so simple" to me, man. i like that piano-style

  • The Cantina Band just retired.

  • "It's so simple," Martin says.

"Screw you man," said the girl enviously watching from her laptop.

  • Wow. I love it. Good job.

  • well ... he is quiet awesome !

  • !!

  • Williams and Kondo would be proud. ;D

  • Oh my god, I fucking LOVE ragtime haha

  • I've got a sudden case of Tarantallegra!

  • Wow...

Oh wow that was so great. ^^

Thank you so much for brightening my evening :)

  • Amazing how he just improvised all that...

  • incredible! my grandmother played ragtime piano and I have always loved both styles but sadly cannot play them. I have some small skill, but no talent.

  • The washboard makes it sound a little like "The Triplets of Belleville."

  • What is the name of the song at 2.18??? :)

  • @filiboss100 It's the tune from the Cantina scene in the first Star Wars film. It's commonly referred to simply as "Cantina Band".

  • @Keeper1st and THAT is allready more or less in the "swing" genre anyway, which came AFTER the Ragtime one.

  • @filiboss100 Cantina Band by John Williams

  • @filiboss100 cantina band

  • Ais-je reconnu le rire de Tom Brier à 2:18 ?

Is it the Tom Brier's laugh at 2:18 ?

  • @superkiwikiki Yes; you can even see Tom leaning on the piano at one point. There are many great pianists present here. Also present were Andrew Barrett, Morten Gunnar Larsen, Adam Swanson, Max Keenlyside, Vincent Johnson, and probably others whom I've forgotten.

  • @Keeper1st

    Thank you!

I am from France, and all your videos make me fly.

I am dreaming when listening to your videos.

    Merci!

Je suis de France, et toutes vos vidéos me font voler.

Je suis en train de rêver quand j'écouter vos chanson.

  • Wow.... I just learned how to play super Mario bros on the piano and it's only one handed so it sounds horrible. I don't think I have enough hand coordination to do that!!!

  • OMG!! I want to play like this !!

    u did superb job !

  • YOU're EPIC!

  • I freakin love this. I WANNA PLAY LIKE U.

  • WHAT IS THIS SORCERY?!

  • Killed it, just killed it! Awesome job bro!

  • Aaah~ Stride has to be my favorite style of piano :D Thank you kind sir.

  • Amazing. I want to hear this played in an old Western Bar or Salloon...

  • @ullombrospictures Why? This style of music is from the 1920s and '30s.

  • @Keeper1st

this is also some kind of ragtime... and this was teh music of the late 19th cent and early 20th

  • @LOECHARU Yes, stride is a subset of ragtime, but it didn't come into being (or into prominence) until after WW1.

  • TAKE MY MONEY

    TAKE ALL OF IT

  • 13 pissed off pianists.

  • This sounds like a cross of Pirates of the Caribbean and Super Mario =D

  • Would have sounded better without the dude scratching the board in the back.

  • Musical nerdage FTW <3

  • O_O awesome!!

  • I quit

  • This is the way the Mario theme song is meant to be played :-P

  • I need to learn to play like this guy.

  • Ya-hoo! This is cool!

  • Comment removed

  • @tobias212 You... What ? :o

  • you rock

  • Brilliant. More please!

  • so i'm officially packing up as a pianist ,after seeing this video ,this man makes it look so easy !!!awesome!!!

  • I need to go watch the cantina scene from Star Wars now.

  • Just one question: does anyone the piece he starts to play at 2:13, because it sounds a lot like "Czech roll" (for those who don't know what I'm talking about, just search it up here on youtube)...

  • @Bascavia10 He's playing another tune from Star Wars -- the tune played by the alien band in the cantina at Mos Eisley.

  • @Keeper1st yeah its called cantina band

  • @Bascavia10

All I have ever seen it credit as is "Cantina Band." Composed by John Williams.

  • @Bascavia10 That's the cantina music from star wars.

  • WTF :|

    Awe-some.

  • Wow!! nice playing!!!!<33 Amazing!!!(*v*)

  • He's not asian! Take that stereotypes!

  • Amazing, epic and Win all rolled up into one. I'd love to see what else this guy could do with other popular gaming and sci-fi themes.

  • @fizzlewig Martin released a new album today. Three tracks are his ragtime/stride takes on videogame themes.

  • i couldnt even do the left hand

  • this guy is very talented

  • @WanderingRover He says that he recently got kicked out of Steinway Hall in New York for playing Art Tatum! Philistines.

  • @Keeper1st I don't understand? Why would he kicked out for that??

  • @thejaredlives There are still those who treat ragtime/stride/jazz as unworthy of consideration as serious music.

  • @Keeper1st So sad that people don't have the appreciation for this amazing music. Thanks for the upload. I thoroughly enjoyed this. As will my students.

  • @Keeper1st Those who treat ragtime/stride/jazz as unworthy of consideration as serious music are unworthy of being treated seriously as they obviously are either deaf or blind ;)

  • @Keeper1st It's complete BS that he got kicked out, and people with no musical talent out there make millions.

  • Awesomeness!

  • Brilliant!

  • Thumbs up for the brilliant pianist, despite the overpowering seventeen washboards that must have been playing in the background.

  • @stuntdog63 Heh, it sounds that way, doesn't it? This old camera reeeeally liked washboards. It made them sound much louder than they were in person.

  • @Keeper1st a little equing or a gentle high freq low pass might have helped

  • I think you are good enough to even beat a Disklavier.

  • Effortless switch from the main Star Wars theme to the Cantina band song. Superb.

  • A-MAZ-ing..thanks for sharing your gift!

My son has Aspergers(high functioning Autism) and you have three of his favorite things..

    piano, Mario, and RAGTIME!

  • I think I just developed a liking for ragtime piano

    GJ Martin

  • chuck norris could play this with his eye lid

  • 11 people are just jealous on his skills..

  • best!!!

  • Impressionant !

  • @helmut4lyfe Hardly. Andrew Barrett is a very accomplished musician. There are a lot of videos of him playing piano on YouTube, as well as his excellent washboard playing. It's not as easy as you might think.

  • *cough* I think I may be in love. This is fabulous. It makes me wish I had kept up my lessons!

  • This reminds me of me =P i play this kind of ganra but usaly at a slower tap...

Frankly if i did that speed at the time i play piano id have autherutus.

    Very nice compotions though.

  • just awesome i mean just the fact that he's doing off the top of his head is just awesome.

  • just awesome

  • *choir in background* and god said unto thee ... U shall hav unbelievable talent on piano!!!!

  • HAHAHAHAHA I peed my pants laughing.. very nice! NICE NICE NICE rendition

  • I wonder how many fps your camera should have to not see his left hand as a blur.

  • @kledder2 This camera only did 20 fps. This isn't a particularly fast tempo, really, so you can see the notes he's hitting even with the slow frame rate.

  • HARRY PATTER 8D

    .........

im such a nerd LOL XD but... that was amazing... e.e [subscribes and favorites] ;P

  • what notes do you play in the left hand for that pattern you do could you please tell me the note names

  • Awesome o.o

  • this talking in the background is too annoying...

  • @Cillitpeng Tip: Don't ever go to a party. People talk.

  • @Keeper1st don't ever post a video on youtube. People talk shit.

  • @Cillitpeng forever alone

  • This really should have more views, Martin is amazing. Guess I have a goal for the next ten years now.

  • Wow - you are an incredible pianist

  • блин да как он пападает то..аааа я и вдвое медлеенее играть буду с ошибкамипипец..

  • that was a pleasure to watch

  • I'd have to say that the Cantina Band song is my favorite part of the Star Wars medley. The Super Mario theme was awesome, my younger brother figured out how to play the original theme on piano. Sometimes I try to convince him to play it this way, but he wants to stick to playing Joplin for now. This is one of my favorite videos on YouTube of all time.

  • Man, I wish I was at this party!!! Sounds like so much fun.

  • The amount of brilliance in one man is literally astounding.

  • super mario sounds like western sallon theme

  • @IronAlpha10 Hardly. The stride piano style is from the 1920s!

  • @IronAlpha10 Sounds more like the annoying orange sonf when he IS getting funnier and funneeir!

  • @IronAlpha10 it's also like rag time

  • thats fun!

  • you dont understand how jealous i am

  • amazing man fucking great

  • Wow, that's f***in' awesome! Con gratulations!

  • sick as!

  • i wish i could just improvise with stride like this

  • ... O.O

    ... i think i just jizzed a little bit

  • i wish i had the ability to turn any tune into a stride piano arrangement, i would have so much fun with it :D

  • COOL!"!!!

  • exelent

  • I wish I could play the piano HALF as well as this guy can. Wow.

  • Great!!! I only wish that this annoying sound the guy on the floor makes wouldnt be there.

  • the washboard is perfectly in place :D

  • @NickXDDX Finally, somebody gets it. The washboards just add to the fun! Other videos from this session have castanets, kazoos, and triangle all added to the mix! Good times.

  • OMG I LOVE THIS

  • Perfect ! i played piano for 6 years then i stopped now im playin again is there any way i will reach this stadium of playing and do u have some tips :):?

  • Aw3sO.omE!

  • wooow very nice ;-)

  • Simply great.

  • LOL this is so fucking awesome!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Simply awsome dude!

  • Yep.

  • wow i like the little spin you gave the songs

  • Somebody should take the washboard and smash it over the head of whoever is playing it, and let this pianists play.

  • i agree. the washboards are just annoying

  • @MrJoshlybuck Trust me, playing a washboard well is a lot harder than it looks. Andrew Barrett, the one who takes it to the floor, is an excellent washboardist, as well as a great pianist. There are plenty of videos online of him playing either.

  • This video seriously should be getting millions of views!!! I really wish I was there to see this in person. This is just pure amazing talent and skill. I posted this video on my facebook to bring more people to watch it. Thanks a million for posting this!!! :)

  • Excellent playin, you are skilled

  • the harry potter was amazing lol! i didn't think you could make that song sound ragtimey ;P

  • not ragtime. stride.

  • you are absolutely amazing(:

im getting enrolled in piano lessons soon(: yayy!!

  • hahahaha!!! it´s very good!

  • good job!

  • he has 15 fingers ! :~

  • @vini4356 at least :D

  • @vini4356 You're kidding ? MORE THAN 15 ! xD

  • @vini4356 I noticed that but didn't want to comment as I thought it might be a faux pas

  • I have to add one more comment. How many people in the world would blend these 3 themes right on the spot ragtime style? No one except Martin, he does it right and it is genuinely awesome IMO. His other videos are really cool too.

  • This guy and those themes rock!!!!

  • I recommend the one called "Frivolous Fun with Familiar Tunes" -- Martin and Frederick Hodges do the Mister Rogers and Sesame Street themes.

  • One of the best videos I have seen in YouTube thus far. Immediately going to my favorites!

  • i dont' have words for this... simply amazing...

  • kinda jazz style added on Mario Theme, cool ^^

  • great! :D

    love it

  • totally amazing! Make more of these!

  • AH SAID AH WANT TO HEAR SOME PIAN-E NOT PIAN-O...so gosh dang give me some piany

  • i don't know why you got thumbs down; for you retards that don't know what that is, it's from the simpsons.

  • haha i am glad someone has a good sense of humor! you are my new refound hero!

  • @jakegoeswild Faster than what, exactly? The only part of this that's at all faster than the original tunes is the first couple bars of the Star Wars theme. The stride style is busier, but the tempo isn't particularly quick. Martin does play serious early jazz piano; search his name on YouTube for dozens of examples. This is just a bit of fooling around.

  • "It's about 11:30 p.m. on Sunday night after the 22nd annual West Coast Ragtime Festival."

He isn't trying to replicate it- he is putting a ragtime spin on them. I think it is pretty fantastic!

  • I LOVE IT!!!! it's so awesome =D

  • He's amazing. I watch this every day, it's great inspiration right before practicing. I figure if I watch it enough I'll figure out how to play it and then transpose it all to my harp. =)

    Thanks for sharing!

  • You are my idol! :O) It looks so easy...

  • THATS AWESOME! Do you have sheet music for it?

  • He's just improvising the arrangements. I could get you "straight" sheet music for the tunes but it would be up to you to figure out how to turn it into something like this...

  • Thanks I'd love that if you could get some sheet music for it! but also do you know specific rag chords? because most rag pieces revolve around certain chord in the left hand

  • Chords in ragtime are no different than in anything else in Western music.

  • If you do could you send me a copy too? I'd love to play this sort of stuff but all i can play is 12th street rag ....so i don't exactly have a vast repetoire...

  • but boy oh boy.that left hand.

have any suggestion with how to play the left hand accruately and well I guess..... just precisely

  • Wish I knew... I think it's just lots of practice! There's a great video of Martin along with Bryan Wright, both blindfolded, doing Maple Leaf Rag on two pianos. Search "Double blind Maple Leaf". Or just look in my Favorites.

  • Could you send me the link for the "straight" sheet music ? Please.. !

    would be awesome ! =)

  • @DasGoeck I actually have a video showing the Cantina Band sheet music which you can find on a search, and if you search "Athlete's Rag Brier" (without quotes) you'll find a video of it. The description of each video contains a link to the relevant song. Don't have a Harry Potter transcription but I'm sure one can be found online somewhere...
