New brazil nut trees will only grow when the agouti finds a lot of nuts, eats some and hides the rest. but he does this in the shadow. The nuts will only shoot roots when the agouti forgets where he hid them and when sunlight hits the nuts, for instance because another tree died and no longer provided shadow. So nuts & agouti survive because he somtimes forgets them.
Probably slipperyness. The slipperier they are the more likely they are to move around, and they are more likely to move upwards where it's less dense.
