These STOL designed (think of mountain/jungle unimproved short airstrip)aircraft typically have very steep approaches so the roll out will be short and they won't eat trees or whatever is on end of runway and that is why these types of ac have very robust shock absorbing landing gear and you notice the gear did a commendable job of soaking up shock. With more agressive braking this could have been a 400' rollout which is very short.
This was the first flight test of the aircraft (with an unconventional engine), and the flight characteristics caught the pilot a little unaware. So no, it wasn't intentional - but it still is a great demonstration of what the gear can take. The Zenith STOL line are superb aircraft.
If you are going to beat up a perfectly good airplane like that, then maybe you should just donate it to me. You surely don't deserve to have something that nice if you are going to destroy it. I can't afford an airplane yet, but I will tell you that I would never abuse it if I had one.
It's a CH-701. If you're not smacking it around a bit you're not doing it right. It's a Willeys Jeep with wings. Plus it's a homebuilt, so if he breaks something he can just make new parts.
its a demonstartion. hes not trying to land softly. hes showing you guys how durable his plane is. and saying its a jeep which i think it is. nice plane man!
holy shit thats a big air foil, and check the high angle of incedince at :22. this must be a bush plane that can take off in like 50 ft:) whats top speed? 80?
Ummm...the title says HARD LANDING DEMONSTRATION. So yea it wasn't suppose to be a great landing. You know land hard on purpose to show the strength of the gear. So I think the pilot had an 'on day'.
@jamespratt7 I think you missed the point. If you a buy a STOL aircraft, you buy it for the STOL, not for the looks. If you want a nice looking plane, buy a TBM, but I will see you at the end off the runway trying to pull it out of the ditch.
This was a better landing then I made the first time in a light sport plane. The time from being over the runway still you stall is very short in this light planes.
hes aproaching where wrong..he came 2 high and low speed with nouse down..hes try hes best 2 pul but its came late..and this plane have a very good wings left..a kid can do a landing better then this (surry bro )
what I don't understand is why he didn't bounce up into the air again instantly - he stayed on the ground for a split second after the puff of smoke from teh tires and then went back up. As if it wasn't a bounce but a bobble of the elevator or something.
From what I hear you have to carry more power into the flare because the 701 is kind of draggy, low mass, similar in that way to an UL.

Regardless of being done on purpose this shows how rugged the landing gear is.

Hard landing , and i think it was not on purpose , and how much does it cost?

Uh, you slammed it to the deck pretty hard.

the approach was too steep. im not sure tho if this was done in purpose.
luigimanzanares 1 year ago
@luigimanzanares - It's a STOL airplane so steep approaches are typical (though the hard landing is not so typical :)

@stolflyer STOL? it shouldn't be STALL ?

This pilot failed to carry power on finals and flared far too late.

"Hard landing demonstration" never heard of such a thing.
Why would anyone demonstrate that. Sounds more like a title to cover up poor technique by the pilot.

You should be a pilot for the Navy, they don't see the reason for flares either! just bring it on it, and drop it.
Nice plane though ... I'm jealous
