As much of a Beatles Fan that I am, please don't get it twisted as to think that Ringo/Abbey Road, were the 1st to come up w/ the Tea Towel drum muffle trick!! They just simply became the most famous!! Ringo just liked Tea Towels, but as my Father, & Many other drummers I've met from the 50's-present said, they would use anything from pillow cases/blankets/wallets/hand, wash towels/t shirts/etc..., Who "really" came up w/ it, we'll probably never know!! Nonetheless, it's a brilliant sound!!
Honestly.... you got a zillion dollars rare mics, drums, consoles, in a unique classic studio... to put some towells in the kit? You'll say: "but at the time many there did it", but it definetly ruins all the propose to capture the sound perfectly, in a meticulous way.
To do that, you just could used a simple good room and good mics.
@Wardog2008 I would have to Strongly disagree w/ that statement!! I've been there & tried it, & it ain't that simple or the same! & it doesn't ruin anything, it's no different than running a $5k vintage guitar thru a $300 pedal, it's an effect. Why do drums have to just stay "drums"?? That's boring....Imagine if the drums on "Come Together" were recorded like "normal"...no dampening/no effects/etc...? it would've been just another Beatles song!! Thankfully they didn't do that.... = )
@Nellynoodlebums Actually, he's one of the UK's top session drummers, and for good reason. If you hear him play the drums you'll realize how good he is. Ralph Salmins. Search for him.
I'm kinda annoyed they didn't even mention Ringo, because a lot of those techniques were his idea like putting towels over the drums. When I see the title, "Abbey Road 60s Drums", then I automatically think Ringo Starr.
@Xmenfan246 Ringo? No mate, tea towels have been used to deaden the sound since the twenty's in club jazz bands and marching bands.
Ringo was quite honestly a bit shite. Technically, he was terrible copared to other drummers at the time like Cozy Powel and Ginger Backer, for example, he couldn't do rolls. All he could really do was keep the beat... I suppose thats something...
As a technician he wasn't much good but if you really look at what was needed in the band, he was perfect for the job ... you really start to appreciate Ringo's value as a drummer when you've had to play with some sons of bitches who cannot operate in a band environment at all!
Ringo wasn't flashy, but he's everything that some bands need - steady and unique. Tons of people rip off his fills to this day, and there's nothing fancy about them.
@DaveRingle Ringo had horrible technic? HA !! thats funny, now before u go nuts sir..... Do not confuse technique and speed... i know you probably read "modern drummer" but ca'mmon know : )
Just curious why, with all the emphasis on authenticity, you went with ported bass drum heads? While removing the front head would have been authentic in the later 60s, something like that Gretsch kit's head wouldn't have happened in the 60s and even a hole that small is going to change the sound. Seems kind of against the point to me.
Interesting video - would have been nice to have heard more of the drums actually being played Ralph Salmins is one of the best session drummers around today!
Except... those drums in the clip don't sound like 60's Abbey Road drums to me.
And the guy hitting the snare, kick, and the crash isn't hitting things remotely the way someone does when they're in the thick of the groove. He looks more like a tech than a player.
@gscottsyndicate I have these drums, and they sound awesome, they play awesome.
It's more than just raw sounds that went into that vintage style -- sound processing, playing style are just as important factors to get that classic sound.
you bet that they need a different approach when recording for samples, than in "real life" - they said in the video, that they'd purposely used different angles and spots and velocities to record many different samples.
I think the result is great - that justifies the maybe technical approach to the sample recording method.
Disappointing. Comes across as a corporate video and a lame one at that. 'Exclusive to Abbey Road'? Well, good for you but I'd prefer to see and hear the benefits demonstrated. And who was the test drummer? This is such a smug, self-satisfied promo that I'm annoyed I wasted three minutes 20 seconds watching it. It's a shame as the idea is tantalising.
What a complete waste of time. I'm so dissapointed.
Where is the drumming? Where's the explanation . I was really looking forward to hearing the different sounds as they adjust levels, compress etc etc.
The director and editor of this thing have big ego's and couldn't give a toss about the content.
hi ,im sorry but I never seen anyone tune like that.Maybe hes that good he can do that..I was just wondering why he tunes like that, maybe he just fine tunes like that ?I wasnt putting down people in the uk.
Not always. You can test the pitch of lugs opposite each other, but you may have to tweek only one, leaving the other. You don't always tweek both. it's what ever works for you. there's no hard and fast rule.
At no point in this video was the command given "all around the kit" and then the hearing/seeing of this, which was the original point of my watching this video in the first place.
Single hits? Not hearing enough of the actual sound coming through the desk and/or studio monitors? GYP.
hey, if you call yourself a drummer then you'll know that that guy there is Ralph Salmins one of the top session drummers in the world!!! have some respect for the guy, he's a legend!!!
that ludwig looks 70's, drum heads have changed a lot since the 60's, wonder if they got old stock or sumthin, cause that really changes the sound. Personally, the 70's aren't known as having great drum sounds, very tinny and 'ringy' due to thinner heads and' jazz' like tunings. maybe it will become poular again, retro!. great vid though, enjoyed it, love that old recording gear.
did they really put holes in the front kick head back then? i always thought that was something they started doing in the 80's and is why kick drums sound so bad now...i know they removed the head...
The drums sound really good, and I can definitely picture using them in some great songs. This is going to go awesome with my Abby Road Keyboards Refill! That combined with Spectrasonics Trilian Retro 60's Epiphone Viola Bass and my buddy Travis on his incredible gibson guitars and we're gonna sound like a million bucks!

Oh come on now, vintage microphones?
They used to smoke during sessions right?
Smoke particle size is 0.08 micron... right through the grills mate, plus all the other crap on those diaphragms.
Probably getting 40% efficiency out of 'vintage'.
