The execution of the final scene is cringe worthy in every despicable way. Sure, the idea is fine but the direction is so heavy handed that it got me busting a roaring laugh. When the music swells like it does here, the studio look of the film is so glossy, and the saccharine image of the child running into the foreground screaming "Swing Heil" at the truck. It's like watching a Hot Shots style parody. Is it self-parody? Nope. I don't think that the filmmakers are smart enough to see this.

There is always so much hope and promise in younger generations why would we want them to be influenced to be so self centered. That movement was to no avail.

We watched this in my History 12 class the other day, and by the end of it, most of the class was holding back tears. Then afterwards, whenever we passed each other in the halls we cried out "Swing Heil!" It was so beautiful. :')

This movie is total bullshit. It was not outlawed, the closer you got to Berlin, the more patriotic the music became on the radio. I have plenty of German swing music from wartime, made by mainstream musicians durring the war.

Some if not most of them did join out of love for their country, race and culture, but also because they might have already been racist or they felt Hitler was doing it because they thought he was good and knew what was best for them. Some did join out of fear of being forced into work camps. Every person you met who said they didn't do it out of fear, don't speak for all of them who did join in general.

Also, there was no battle field for these kids since there wasn't a war at the time to begin with, they were simply some of the first young people to protest against the Nazi hold in the best way they could, and it was their courage that influenced others like them to make an even bigger impact, like The White Rose movement

@akamarufan501 How did they fail? There is no failure because it was an idea. The point of an idea is not to succeed but to make a point. Ideas do not care about success. Ideas live on. This was just one of the many German youth movements against the Nazi regime. They didn't fail because we know of them today and they are held in German history as symbols of the resistance. That in itself is a success.
This is my absolute favorite part of the movie. The world has fallen apart around him, all of his friends are battered, bloody and beaten (and worse,) and all he has is left is Swing. He knows the inevitable is coming, but he swings anyway. Powerful.

Swing music has its roots in African American music and many musicians were such as well as Jewish which went against the Nazi ideology. We started watching that on Thursday last week on Thursday at school in English class and finished it today. It's the best movie I have ever seen. I think it was Christian Bale's best role. Thanks for uploading this movie! Swing Heil, everyone!

What happened to Thomas happened to so many of the "Hitler youth". They turned in their own families. They caused their parents and siblings death because they were so brain washed. Sad..it may happen again...it begins in some places.

@islandsylph yes. People talk about the wars, both of them like they happened so long ago. My GRANDFATHER fought in the FIRST world war, my Uncle and other grandfather enlisted to fight the Nazis in the second. It is not a "long time ago" for me nor should it be for anyone. As long as there is hate in the world there are Nazis.

One of the best movies, and this is one of the best scenes in ANY movie. From all the turmoil and struggle he goes through, he turns to music and dancing to heal the demons in his life. Best dancing!!!

I've never heard of this movie before and I love Christian Bale. I had no idea there was such a strong youth movement against the Nazis, much less that it involved swing. What a great movie. Thanks so much for uploading!

I'm crying so freaking hard right now. These kids were so strong, staring death in the face and sticking to their beliefs. There is so much we take for granted. I don't know what I would have done in this situation, but I hope I would have been a Swing Kid. "It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing." Swing Heil everybody. they may have failed, but they did. succeed by letting there voice be heard, it showed willy the true meaning of swing. my grandfather was a swing kid, he stood out and let his voice be heard. and for even today, there message is being sent to all us teens in the world. don be silenced! dont let anyone put you down! that is the true meaning of being a swing kid. so Swing Heil everyone! @akamarufan501 How did they fail? There is no failure because it was an idea. The point of an idea is not to succeed but to make a point. Ideas do not care about success. Ideas live on. This was just one of the many German youth movements against the Nazi regime. They didn't fail because we know of them today and they are held in German history as symbols of the resistance. That in itself is a success.

This is my absolute favorite part of the movie. The world has fallen apart around him, all of his friends are battered, bloody and beaten (and worse,) and all he has is left is Swing. He knows the inevitable is coming, but he swings anyway. Powerful.

My late father's German friend was the same age age "Willy" and lost his sibling to those camps; so many HATED the Nazi regime ...he just passed recently scarred for life RIP Geunter..wake up .. it can happen again....

@akamarufan501 You do not know what it was like because swing music was outlawed in Nazi Germany as was just about every other Western influence. Swing music has its roots in African American music and many musicians were such as well as Jewish which went against the Nazi ideology. To do that in Nazi Germany was to risk being labeled as a political enemy and dangerous to the state. So do not say that you are just like them because you are not.

Defiance in the face of evil. Anyone who had any self worth in Nazi Germany defied the Nazis. Doing nothing is the same as being a nazi. If you do not understand this you should find a more worthy values system in which defying the Nazis is the only option even if that means death.
