  • I think the point is not to utilize horse drawn carriages in downtown, heavy, or vehicular traffic, in inclement weather......not that horse drawn carriages are inherently cruel, they aren't. No more than riding on a horse's back is cruel. There are lines to be drawn with either....

  • That is very dangerous! They are stupid idiots!

  • That shouldn't be happening! It was ok in the 1800's i guess as they actually took care of their horses, but this is just cruel

  • 500 N 13 street Philadelphia pa. 19123 is a carriage ride facility in Philadelphia, go visit it and you will see just how "pleasant" a horse lives. When I was down at the carriage rides they operated on vine street during rush hour and extreme weather. Don't believe just go down and witness it yourself. Don't believe the lies!

  • I think people need to stop being blinded by what 'animal rights' groups say just because they are animal rights groups.. Shockingly, they can be wrong or misguided. Why do I never see anyone complaining about how some of the Amish treat their horses? Honestly, this is nothing.

  • This is very indeed cruel. The horses have these head gear shit on their heads which disallows them to see what is beside them. The owner only wants them to look foward & not get distracted but they actually cover their eyes from seeing so this allows more accidents. :P Its really sad to see animal cruelty everywhere. Humanity may think its funny how rodeos catch bulls by their neck with a rope but they are hurting. Animals want to bring out attention & plse their owners so they dont get whipped

  • greed=evil

  • Horses definitely can sleep standing up but as a lifelong horsewoman I assure you, when they are content and have space they enjoy a nice lie down for a brief nap and even more so, they love a good roll in grass mud or sand.

  • such left wing bullshit. Don't just listen to these left wing organizations like PETA and the Humane Society to get ur info. They only present one slanted view of this industry.

  • I hate them all. Not the horses, the peple.

  • Stop the abuse of nyc carriage horses. RIP Charlie! Run free at last!

  • As much I do not know about the horse drawn carriage industry in the city, I do know that horses do not lay down for a long time and it's definitely not for deep sleep.

  • I drive a carriage in Philadelphia ... the horses are not allowed to operate during rush hour on the weekdays (except major holidays), and are not allowed out when the temperature is under 32 degrees nor over 91 degrees. All horses are required to have 2 days off per week and are not allowed to work double shifts on the weekdays. We are also just confined to the historical district, which is front street to 7th street; Vine Street to South Street.

  • Look....horses work alongside vehicular traffic all over the world. There were 36 cyclist deaths in NYC, 186 pedestrian deaths last year...are you going to say "ban bicycles and walking", too? Dogs are run over by cars all the time. The facts are that our horses live good lives and are trained for this job over many year. My vis PRoVE this. No one has EVER been killed in a carriage accident in NYC EVER

  • This clip showed horses at work, where was the cruelty? I saw no starved horses, no beaten horses, no injured horses. A lot of empty claims from people who do not own horses....

  • @naomijackpot well you work 24/7 then go home to a nice concrete box to stand up and sleep in right? putting a horse in a stall is cruel, riding them is cruel, making them work is cruel, they a wild f*cking animal, my horses get as much land to run on as they want unlimited feed and no worries or noise, these horses dont get what they f*cking were born for, stupid asshole city humans

  • it the dame city peopl that dont know how to take care of a dame horse

  • They cry out for animals rights... right after they've eaten battery farmed animals, stuck on their leather shoes and used the paper from the trees that animals once called home to make their placards. Nothing hypocritical at all here.

  • Horses aren't supposed to walk on concrete all day. It's disgusting.

  • He said "its a throw back to the past" ............. AND WHAT'S WRONG WITH THAT? Humane societies have gotten WAY OFF TRACK. IF YOU REALLY LISTEN TO THEM, THEIR HATE FOR THE ANIMALS WILL SHOW THROUGH. Their real goal is to get RID of all animals! Idiots!!! I have as much right to ride my horse anywhere as you do to drive your car in the country. That's like saying motorcyclists shouldn't ride becuz there are cars around! IDIOTS!!!

  • agree and disagree i agree because yes it can be cruel to make them trot and pull many people and heavy things and i have seen some being cruelly treated. but i hav also seen some with bright eyes pulling fair loads and stopping inn shade every hour to offer them a drink

  • This wouldn`t be so awful if it were done away from citys and the horses were given on out of every three weeks off as well as weekends and a comfertabul stabel, but clearly that`s too mucht ask so we need to do away with this completely

  • When I was in New York, I saw draft horses who were so thin, they had begun to look like scarecrows. Their feet were overgrown, they had sores from the harness, and they were incredibly listless. Then, I saw a carriage that was clearly not the same brand, possibly even family owned. There was a happy, perky horse being worked in Central Park and he was well-fed and well-groomed. It all depends on how you decide to treat the horse, and those huge businesses simply don't care.

  • @CaliforniaBlonde000 Than kyou for having common sense. Well said.

  • You CANNOT make a horse do something is DOES NOT what to do... if these horses didnt want to walk around the cities they would protest.

  • @melissalisa123, yes, in some countries, horses have been known to gather in groups to hold up huge banners and march up to their government house, it's been quite effective, managed to bring in legislation, I hear they're selling their story to the media for millions.

  • @melissalisa123 What you're saying makes sense on the surface. Unfortunately, horses can absolutely be forced to do something they don't want to do - horses can even be "run to death", where you continue to spur on a galloping horse until it collapses and dies from exhaustion.... in fact there are videos on youtube showing cart horses collapsed from being over worked. And consider this, most training/breaking of a horse is making it do something it doesn't want to.

  • @GoodRedBlackRatio Now that's funny, because all those alledged 'omg, carriage animal cruelty' video show horses without any signs of stress, nerves or depression. Actually, some of them look outright happy in the videos where they are supposedly being abused.

Makes you wonder on how much the silly accusers actually know of horse's psychology and body language.

Call me a cynic, but I'm going to assume they know nothing.

  • @Blahb27 why would anyone want to call you a cynic? get your facts straight before you try and degrade an organization that is doing so much for the animals you think you know so much about. this organization helped in closing down all horse slaughter houses in the US. they have also helped to pass many bills and laws today, for example the canadian seal hunt. SOME of the horses LOOK downright happy? you are so naive.

  • These horses are given a good life, some taken AWAY from slaughter houses, i wish everyone would shut up..

  • 1)The horses do have enough room to lie down in the stalls.

    2) The bedding is changed frequently.

    3) Law states that horses in NYC can not work when it is above 89 degrees or below 19 degrees. The ASPCA monitors this and the Horses are sent back to the stables when the weather is harsh including heavy snow, rain, wind.

    4) Animal activists are exaggerating extremists who have no idea what they are talking about. All of you who watch these things and believe them are very gullible.

  • @fleite813 I'm sorry you don't care about animals.

  • @luvluvluv96

Im sorry, but you don't know manure about horses. HSUS is just a propaganda spewing peta supported pile dog waste. if you stupid enough to believe this pile of crap then PLEASE give more money to them so they can take your dogs and cats from you as well. because when it all comes down to it at the end, THAT is HSUS's and PETA's goal. truth hurts dont it? dont belive me? why dont you Google INGRA Newkirk and her "mission" to eradicate all DOMESTICATED animals. aka: ABOMINATIONS

  • How cruel! Horses are one of my fav animals and thats how there treathed?! how sick! and i made a vid about animal cruelty heres the name of it: You can find a way to stop animal abuse & animal cruelty. dont forget the point at the end of the phrase

  • It's the 21st century, get those horses out of the city and on to a farm. As for the drivers... well, it's their fault they didn't try in high school.

  • i see these all the time in Philly but it's never in packed traffic--normally it's in the historical districts where the cars don't go because of the cobblestone streets

  • Nobody cares? What a stupid and ignorant comment that is. I also care as do many others, maybe they should get the people who support animal cruelty to pull heavy carriages all day long. Lets see how long they can stand it before they die from exhaustion

  • yall are fuking right their torturing those poor creatures lol they should baby those creatures and not make them work for their food, i see them dying everyday because of their very hard work of walking while pulling a wagon that only requires a couple pounds of pressure to move it witch means they only have to lean into it

  • nobody cares

  • @cobra660 I care and so do lots of people, just not idoits like you, what a fuking stupid comment you left

  • @cobra660 I care and so do lots of people, just not idoits like you, what a stupid comment you left

  • @cobra660 I care and so do lots of people, just not idoits like you, what a stupid comment you left

  • No one forces a 1200 pound horse do anything. I know when my 16 hand horse doesn't want to be hooked up to his 'carraige' he isn't going too. To say that they are forced to work during harsh conditions is just plain ignorance. Horses on farms are out in those conditions as well. Walking creates warmth during the winter and sweating cools them down during the summer. And I bet that after a hot sweaty day the drivers will wash down the horses because they care about them. Look at REAL problems.

  • @amaterasuSpiritwolf i agree totally these horses are addapted to this sort of lifestyle and are used to it just like top level showjumpers are adapted to there lifestyle horses arent ment to jump 6foot fences but they do and they cope really well with it maybe these horses are the same!!! And as for then having to walk up steep ramps to get to there stables...is that any different to walking up a hill ehen out riding....least there not having to carry a rider wobbling about!!!

  • @gibbygirl89 These horses are trained to handle the conditions... Not everyone treats their horses that bad. Look at both sides of the story. Yeah, it might be wrong, but what if someone thought that horses shouldnt be ridden at all. Or that bits are a form of torture to the horse. Think about both sides of the story. :)

  • I went into one when I went to Chicago for Christmas like 2-3 yes back, with my grandma. She passed away though... It's horrible they half to do this, horses are not machines.

  • I have never been in a horsedrawn carriage. I always thought they looked horrible. I swear I'm going to go around New York and buy those horses. Or I'll tell people the truth about them so they don't use the carriage. Last time I checked, it's not illegal.

  • man the talivans are danger drivers i now it poor horses

  • Horses around constant honking traffic? Poor horse must be so scared! :(

  • @RickiLeeScheck Horses are animals that have a strong flight instinct. If they were scared, they would've been trying to bolt. But instead they were just walking innocently.

  • I NEVER HAVE AND I NEVER WILL GET INTO A HORSE DRAWN CARRIGE

  • why cant people grow up and realize THOSE ARE THE OLD DAYS welcome to the 21st century people!

  • Tell ya what, the 100 degree to 0 degree days worked just fine for the horses in the 1700s. And how DARE those horses pull carriages?! In other places, they simply run around tracks or carry knights at Ren faires! HOW DARE these people make horses do real work?

  • @9showjumper yeah, i agree completely! it's not the actual driving thats inhumane, it's the friggin conditions in the city!

  • @gibbygirl89 They do have to take good care of the horses by law. This vidio skews everything out of perportion. they are not really living in that bad of conditions. did you really look at the stall? they had enough room to lay down and enough bedding. Horses are used to being outdoors all year, and they do not work the same horses everyday or year round.

  • Are in the city, You only believe what you want to believe when you don't see all the story. I'm sure there are places that don't care for the horses properly and i don't condone that but the people that do care shouldn't be given grief. Accidents happen you can't stop them.

  • not every horse drawn carrige is crul i think people just need to look after the horses more like if i were to do it with my horse she would have days of and breaks

  • this is horrible :(

  • what the hell are they doin to them??

  • 1:19 breaks my heart

  • I say to the horses when they go past me in there carriage: canter to make those people fall off!

  • I thought people only hired horse drawn for special occasions....weddings and things. It's deplorable that these poor animals are still "tortured" for some tourists whim, and to make the owner a few bucks.

I think they should be required to take good care of the animals or risk losing them to the humane society. People need to KNOW about these conditions......I didn't know....and I LOVE horses. :(

  • @hrsngarnd They do have to take good care of the horses by law. This vidio skews everything out of perportion. they are not really living in that bad of conditions. did you really look at the stall? they had enough room to lay down and enough bedding. • I don't know much about horses, but I do know that seasonal changing temprature beween 100 and 0 is not animal cruelty towards horses.!!!

Maybe someone who doesnt live in the middle of New York would be more beliveble when talking about proper horse care.

  • Actually, horses are treated MUCH better than what this video is trying to show. There are videos of horse drawn carriage drivers showing how well their horses are treated. STOP SPREADING LIES!

Here's a truth, the HSUS was CREATED by PETA and is HEAVILY FUNDED by PETA.

  • I'm torn, my godmother lives down the street to a horse carriage farm and the horses are healthy and happy. They're treated well and only work in the summer.

Also, I worked at a carriage farm and yes, we used small stalls. Standing stalls, in fact. But we had a huge field and the horses were allowed to sleep out during the day when they weren't working.

On the same note, I went to Canada, and those horses were horribly treated. It depends where it is, to be honest.

  • horse drawn carriage? sure. in big cities? no.

  • I was watching the animal channel, where animal officers were going around on a hot day and reminding horse-owners that it was illegal to make the horses work when the temperature was above a certain amount. (I can't remember the number). The officer actually almost got into a fight with this obese woman who because snarky, saying that she was waiting in line and she should be able to have her turn. The tourists hold a small part of the blame, I'm afraid.

  • Conditions to bad for horses, these people do know horses live in the wild without stables, food given to them, and water given to them. I've seen the stables in NYC, they are freaking huge, horses could lay down and spoon each other if they wanted, what a propaganda lie this video is, i suggest you all look at the other videos and if your in NYC go check out the stables, they let you. These animals get better treatment then some humans do.

  • horse drawn carriage isnt that abusive to me but WTF its so wrong when they do it in such conditions :(

  • i dont understand it and will never but us we can change it

  • I had no idea :( Thanks for sharing.

  • horses sleep standing up all the time. This is just confusing. Its bad for them to lay down. when there down when they are sick you want them to stand. Never want to see a laying down horse for an extended period of time.

  • city people need to descide where they want ti live, city or country

  • they say horses dont belong in cities but they keep building houses and businesses everywhere and people have to keep moving their horses trying to find them a home. theres hardly anywhere to ride in northern idaho becasue of houses.

  • I agree horses shouldn't be in between so much traffic but I don't understand tourists either, what is the fun of driving around between so much traffic? On the other hand, millions of horses are being treated a lot worse. ALSO in the US. I rather see this than all the horses in the worst trucks ever in the US for horse transports to Mexico. Do something about that.

  • Why isn't this illegal?

  • I hate how they keep them on concrete their whole life so sad

  • if i see one of those guys who have a horse drawn carriage i'll put a rope over there shoulder and make them pull a carriage and let them sleep on a 17 inch wide bed with no feathers

  • if i see one of those guys who have a horse drawn carriage i'll rip there head off, put a rope over there shoulder and make them pull a carriage and let them sleep on a 17 inch wide bed with no feathers

  • you people are stupid and dont know what your talking about! so shut up!

  • Then don't ride on that and make them lose the business..let the horses GO!!! Stupid people for torturing the horses through the 4 seasons!!

  • reminds me of black beauty all over again. this is upsetting.

  • When I was little I rode in a carrige like that and thought it was just the most exciting thing. Now I know better.

  • Okay on a country side. With a humane way of doing it "ever read Black Beauty?" On a nice day for a reasonable amount of time with a much-loving home sure sounds good to me. But this....is just stupid. Riding in a carriage the right way for both human and horse thats okay. But horses don't belong in cities. Their poor noses.

  • I had no idea...

  • People are sick. STOP HORSE DRAWN CARRIAGES!!!!

  • @Beatlegirl4eva ONLY to Central Park? It might as well be banned as it should be. People should stop being lazy and depend on horses and instead walk their fat asses to places. However, yes they should have a comfortable place to sleep.

  • Those horses deserve so much more than what they are given. Bigger stalls, maybe a paddock....that would be wonderful for them....the Mayor of NYC should open s section of Central park just for the horses, so that when they need a break, they can go and graze and be horses for a few hours.

  • ive seen this before. i noticed the hooves are cracked and the horseshoes were to small on them. it almost looked like they havent been changed for a very long time. especailly walking in freezing weather and 100 degree heat all day with there feet aching. those are deffintely older more retired horses that have worked all there life and there being worked for more than 9 hours a day? thast just wrong. people in this world need to understand what animals feel to.

  • Just a punch of PITA Pity tactics! LIES Watch the video's done by the carriage people in response to these showing the stables and bedding and the care the horses receive.

  • Get rid of the cars.

  • 9 hours ONLY??? 9 hours are at least 8 and a half too long! Cities are not for horses that is just it!

  • Besides the weather and the conditions in a city. That asphalt is hard as hell on a horses feet even with special shoes thats pretty tough all around

  • not all horse drawn carriage is cruel like the horse industry it self it will have its abusers and just banning it is not fair on the people who do care about there horses. we just need to get rid of the abusers who dont care because i met a man who loved his horses that pulled cariages and thay were well cared for

  • No matter what we're talking about, there's always a line to be crossed....and these people...have definitely crossed it.....When I think of horses, I think of country, grass, pastures, trails, and even a little trip through a small town.....not gosh darn NYC!!! I had no idea that sort of thing was going on.... :/

  • No matter what we're talking about, there's always a line to be crossed....and these people...have definitely crossed it.....When I think of horses, I think of country, grass, pastures, trails, and even a little trip through a small town.....not gosh darn NYC!!! • omg..once when i was little i was in NY and there was a horse that looked sad(was attached to the carrige) and i went up and patted its nose i realised the rope this was loose and i let it go and they got so mad at me..poor horsy :'(

  • i had no idea that the horses pulling these carriages have such poor living/working conditions. carriages should be limited to parks. and the horses should definitely not be overworked.

  • hm.. I think they should only be allowed to do this in the spring...when its windy and warm. Not in 100 degree weather or 0 degrees....... 50s or 60s i think would be acceptable.

  • Not all of these horses are treated bad or neglected.

  • Omg so sad aww i saw one horse that looked realy depressed :(

  • this is what I do for a living here in victoria, BC. Our horses are trailered to work, they live in big stalls in the winter or huge fields in the summer. they have blankets and are very well groomed and are fat. They LOVE their jobs, the interaction and the treats. I can't speak for NYC, but our horses are a pretty happy bunch,

  • is there any thing that has to do with animals humane i mean come on shut up u guys need to pick something and stick with it not go after every animal everything.

  • These horses have a job, just like most of us humans have. Looking at the condition of the horses, they all looked healthy and in very good condition. How do you think horses made it when they traveled in the wagon trains? Or how bout in war, or how bout in cowboy days? Man has used horses for many many years to get us all where we are today. I don't see anything wrong with what we do to work the horses in the cities.

  • I saw these poor animals myself. The hooves look really bad (contraction, cracks, side bone, ring bone and ossifications of the lateral cartilage). They even have a number burnt into their hooves. The saddest part is to watch these "happy families" sitting in the carriages and enjoying the ride. They do not see that the animals suffer. If horses could cry, they would finally know. The other signs of pain remain unrecognized.

Carriage rides should be banned, here in Vienna it is even worse.

  • @sonjawildhorse

The number burnt into their hooves (which, of course, doesn't hurt them) is to identify the horse which is to their benefit.

  • 1:46 in the vid.... talks how horses can't lie down and thats essential for a deep sleep.... horses can't lie down for longer than an hour because their own weight crushes their own organs.... how dumb is that!!!!! plus horses only sleep for like 5 hours, and they sleep standing up..... what they should be focusing on is no grass for these poor animals to gaze in... reminds me of the book Black Beauty

  • oh thats so..so i cant discribe it the poor horses havent any space to calm down and relax always the loud city around them i love my horses and thats horse cruelty !!! and the bag of the horses is damaged because they always have to pull this big and heavycarriges!!!!

  • I thik that horse carraiges are fine as long as they are in safe places (private property, woods, meadows, arenas etc.) and that the horses work only for a little bit like 2hr incraments or something. Otherwise I don't think that they should be pulling carraiges like that in that weather and in those conditions.

  • I work for a company in Cincinnati. There is 20 drafts that get used. Only about 8 are used throughout the week and alternate with the others being sent out of the city to 60 acres of lush pasture to rest. They're very well taken care and spoiled. So NOT ALL CARRIAGE HORSES ARE ABUSED!

  • I'm really going to kill these stupid mother fuckers!

  • thats sad

  • If you want to protect the horses you should proctect theyre jobs. Because that's the small place that they still have in our citys.

Horses can be happy working on carriages I,ve been a carriage driver for 16 years now and the horses that worked with me showed me they where happy to comme to work in all kinds of ways. Just like your dog is happy to see the leach wen it's time for a walk.

  • If you want to protect the horses you should proctect theyre jobs. Because that's the small place that they still have in our citys.

  • onyl part of that taht made me laugh was the horse looking out the windo but it looks liek hrose jail i mean horses r not meant to go up stairs or ramps i eamn horrse carriges should be burnt and all horses sent to hspca

  • i think horse drawn carages sould only be used in parades because they set a section of street for that purpose so in return the horses dont breath in car fumes and get hit by them sure i seen worst treatment but please be careful u dont see me walking down a street with cars flying by in all directions. so why should a horse

  • Can you imagine this being your existence? Carrying a weight day in and day out in horrible traffic and fumes and barely sleeping and sleeping uncomfortably and having to wake up and do it all over again and never have a choice and never get a break?

  • It is easy for people to say horses can handle working all day and that it's not as bad as it looks....but it is easy to say because these people are able to make their own choices and go home to a comfortable soft bed... they don't have to endure what these innocent animals endure.

  • That's right!

  • I can't believe this... HSUS is involved in this now? WTH? What a shame... I really thought they were a cut above the rest. There are millions of animals living in FAR WORSE CONDITIONS.. starving, abused, mistreated, etc, etc. Go do something about THEM, quit worrying so much abt horses that certainly appear to be healthy, well cared for & have a job that pays for their vet checks, hoof care & such.

Get the real abusers.. like this: watch?v=LcajyedSXSg&feature=related

  • How do you know they aren't involved in those other things?

And if there are far worse things going on they should ignore what these NYC horses have to endure?

Go do something about them? I answer that by saying : Stop trying to change the subject.

    This is HSUS's job

  • I don't know about NY, but I do have experience with local carriage horses. I own former carriage horse, as does friend , and another friend was a consultant to a local carriage company.

My Belgian was 800 lbs or more underweight when I got him. He had pressure sores, and permanent hair loss from rubbing harness. He has an old pelvic fx.. He had untreated CPL. and his pasterns are collapsed in a way that could be congenital, but as they are also asymmetrical is likely due to injury.

  • the point of this campaign is not to put ppl out of jobs but to merely create a solution to this atrocity. Listen if all u can do is to find a job sitting on ur fat butt everday pickn up other obese tourists whippin a horse in bz traffic w/congested fumes comin from cars, etc then u should be out of work. Go get a real job doin somethin like workn for the city not addn 2 trouble by more congestion n horse poop on the streets.

  • most of U people here commentn that this is not cruelty r the ones' that sit u'r fannypack wearin fatass on these carriages cos' u can't walk r want to remember what it feels like to be in u'r slave owners ancestors shoes. the point it is there is no point in riding one of these. u want to ride a horse, well then do it the proper way, invest in a ranch n buy some horses that r on list to be put 2 sleep either that r just do w/out it's not a god given necc' that ur fat butt be entertained

  • horses can handle more work than people think. and in al reality horses have the right away. people in cars are suposed to look for horses. its common sence and its just like looking for a person crossing the street. if you cant look at your suroundings while driving then you dont need to be driving! plain and simple.

  • most horses enjoy work, pulling a carrige for a horse is not hard work its like pulling a wheel barrel behind you, horses are also most happy in -5 celcious weather, considering most of the horses in new york are from that area they are well ajusted to the climate.

  • There is nothing wrong with riding everyday. . . they just deserve a good feeding and need to be watered and in good shape. .

  • I think the point is that these animals are DISPOSABLE, sure horse have been bred to carry carts, but these guys are worked to death. Just read "Black beauty" for a glimpse of how it can be.

  • Disposable as in, replaceable?

I want to read Black Beauty.

  • The horses look fine to me. The horse at 1:13 is not skinny. Trust me you haven't seen skinny.

  • Some horses like work. Most are rather lazy though. Its not inhumane. Horses are fine if they're moving, and they've got coats.

    Really, ask a horse lover.

  • I just watched this entire video, and I didnt seen an ounce of cruelty. If you PETA freaks want to worry about cruelty to horses, then go save a starving horse that actually needs your help.

  • the humane society just needs to take their noses to a place where a horse is REALLY being abused like starving and horse tripping and PMU farms NOT this

  • the horse and 1;13 is not skinny just because he isnt huge doesnt make him skinny i dont see any ribs, hip bones or spine.

  • ya, i agree, horses sleep standing, they dont need to lie down..and i roe one in NYC THAT MAKES ME FEEL TERRIBLE ;'(

  • they dont sleep standing up, they do lie down.

  • these people should spend their money and time fighting real abuse cases and leave working people and horses alone. there has been 1 death around 2 yrs ago way better odds then a riding horse.

  • 1:13! Sww that? He's SOO skinny! :(

  • soulshinz - you should update your research on the need in horses for rem sleep and the fact that they cannot get it standing up. if a horse does not lie down for rem sleep, he is stressed and does not feel safe.

  • Very true.

  • I think at 1:44-1:46 the horse has to walk up stairs !?

  • That's a ramp.

  • Having horses draw carriges is one thing. Having them drawing them EVERYDAY, NO MATTER THE WEATHER is just cruel. CURSE THE BASTARDS THAT DO THIS TO INOCENT ANIMALS

  • Agreed! I have yelled at these guys several times for having their horses out in boiling or frigid weather-- just think of the temperature when you have metal shoes on your feet too! I live in NYC and always point out to my friends how terrible the industry is...

  • If these horses were out in a pasture or in the wild, they'd be walking out in all types of weather.

I've worked my entire life outdoors (& ridden horses) through freezing cold/ blazing heat, I can say it's really NOT that bad! For one thing, you get so used to it, you don't notice it at all.. unlike ppl who work in offices, etc. who think of weather as 'terrible'. I quite enjoy the rain & the snow.. and of course, love the summer heat, too. I'm sure horses handle it much the same way, too.

  • WTF!! You ride your horse in 100 degree heat! I have been riding hunter/jumper for 4 years and I NEVER ride my horse in any weather that could be dangerous to it!! If you ride horses you should be able to see the crulity in NYC carriages. We as a equine community need to end this. Horses don't belong in NYC! Living in towers breathing in smog and working all day in 100 degre heat and icy conditions. Thats sick.

  • When you need to move large numbers of cows every sometimes it becomes the only thing.

  • That's right! Help us help those poor horses being abused by thugs.

If you want to see the guy who claims his horses are well treated, check the movie "Blinders" at 38 minutes in.

He pulls on a mask to commit several felonies after the camera sees his face during an assault on 2 PETA cameramen.

Now I am to believe he's going to be kind to his horse after he shows the camera how stupid and vile he is?

  • Do you ride those horses 9 hours a day on pavement in that freezing cold and blazing heat dragging fat tourists uphill in a heavy carriage?

Do you take them back thru the NYC traffic to a small cell in horse jail?

Over and over until they drop? Funny you comparing an hour or so ride in the wild to the extreme conditions of NYC.

This place is punishing to me, whether I am walking, riding a bike in traffic, or driving a car.

I can't imagine it as the pleasant oasis the carriage people describe

  • stop horsing about then . horses sleep on two legs . silly

  • lol u are retarded think b4 u type

  • WTH! The hsus is peta now!

What do know about the carriages of NYC?

    I'll tell you... nothing.

    Only what peta tells you.

If you want to be objective( or is that a 4 letter word) then watch my vids.

See the stables, the horses, regulations, the farm where they get regular breaks..

  • The HSUS is far from PETA status. You don't think horses getting killed every year in carriage rides is enough to outlaw it? Or the damage the cement causes on their feet? Or the fact that many horses who are simply not built to pull carriages are forced to pull around tourists all day? You are quite ignorant. And needanap624, if you were a "real" horse person, you know know how much damage this is causing many of the horses.

  • Umm... they have been "built to pull carriages" for HUNDREDS if not THOUSANDS of years. And how do you know what "damage" cement causes? We've had horses that have run on streets for over 20 years with NO CONCUSSIVE INJURIES. I have horses that have never set foot on concrete or hard surfaces with chronic lameness that can't be cured.

  • Theres just saying this cause were not in the past we dont all ride in horse carriages anymore. The horses are on busy roads with no food no water and i know that cause i saw some before and the horses have broken hooves and there really skinny.I would want an animal in tip top shape cause they need to be strong to pull the carriage, part one

  • Plus they neeed the love and care on the road and in there home cause they are made to be on soft ground not hard. For the home they would go out the there paddock free.mean im just saying the truth. part two

  • Wowm how crule can you be ? I get SOME horses were built to pull carriges, but not all day, with traffic, on cement, no shelter to rest in when they take a little break, no covers for the horse, may i go any further?

  • no cover it is called hair

  • These people make $15milluion a year all in cash.

That's a pretty good incentive to lie and abuse those horses.

They even lie about the money. Call NYC and Co, (the city tourist board) and ask about the numbers they testified to at City Hall.

They won't answer you. It's odd a city agency not returning a request for info, like they are hiding something, which it seems they are.

$15 million in cash buys a lot of politicians in this town

  • I dunno what you were quoting, but how is a horse "built" for anything? They're BORN because they're living creatures... Animals in the wild walk on grass &dirt, not pavement, so it's likely that cement is uncomfortable. Even if you claim cement wasn't for your horses, animals (including humans) do not &should not walk around all day nonstop. Pulling a carriage might not be hard for horse, like pulling a wagon might not be for a person, but try doing it all day every day in those conditions.

  • they ment that a horses size and strenght... a thoroughbred shouldnt pull but a clydesdales are "built" for it... yes they are born and living creatures but "built" is saying like they are large animals with lots of mussel... best for pulling carrages.. they can do it easy.. but they should have pastures and not pull all day.. also should have a team of horses instead..

  • i spent many years working horses...out of 32 horses we had, only 3 would ever lay down...they naturally sleep on their feet for protection from predators. but no animal is meant to pull a cart on pavement thru these conditions for human amusement...sad what we do to our fellow creatures...only man.

  • unless you were awake 24/7 around a horse you can't say they don't lay down...I have spent 50 years with horses and they do lay down..usually leaving one horse to watch while the others sleep and then it sleeps while others watch...

  • If you have spent 50 years with horses, then you should know that horses have the ability to lock their stifles which allows them to fall completly asleep without laying down.
