It is too bad the movie wasn't able to hold every single scene from the book (as it was a very fun read). I suspect that a few of these scenes were cut because Hunter's narration at these points totally warranted a telling of the scene, and is such a great example of what made it the witty, genre piece that it was, but in movie form it was far too much for a person that hadn't read to take in and assume. On a final note: Depp, though believable throughout, was terrible in this scene as Hunter.
Awful they cut this, this contains some of his most accurate idiosyncrasies of the good doc :( I remember reading this part and it making a huge impression on me, every word of his inner dialogue in the book (especially in this part) is a quote waiting to happen.
i need to read the book, but here in Argentina Hunters Books are very difficult to get, i only read, Screwjack , and The Rum Diary, great books also, i will love to read the Hell Angels book
I'm actually glad I missed the 60's. As Thompson described in his "Wave" speech, to live through such a cathartic time only to see everything become worse than before must have been crushing. No wonder the world is in the shape its in today. Only something brand new and radical can save us now and free us of the ghosts of the past.
Even tho i agree with you: They should have made this movie longer, i still dont think they could it do any better. I mean they mastered the books story in to a movie, and they really succeded. Great actors and the movieploit is amazing.
And remember, the orginal book story will always win over the movies
imagine it with a musical soundtrack and it is quite passable. but I guess 'quite' passable isn't enough. can see why they left it out. but you know, I still LOVED watching this! SPIRIT OF THOMPSON LIVES ON!
I'm lead to believe that this scene was an option for a Final Scene, or round about there. so Dr Gonzo has left & Duke is en route back to L.A. when he stops at this bar. here, when he screams "God's mercy on you swine" at the marines - this happens in the book, except at the airport I think, just after buying amyls.
for what it's worth, at this scene's end, imagine the opening chords of "Jumpin' Jack Flash" coming in as he turns the car and the tires screech as he roars away...
have you read the book? because the stuff in there seems so much more crazy than anything that can be put on screen.but right on about the contemplative scenes. Those are the parts where he really comes ou as a writer.
It would have been excellent for the end of the film, if he would have tried to do the mescal and nothing left and just thrown it away. It would have been perfect.

Would this have been 'Wild Bill's Tavern'?
what would have been the scene before and after this?

Aha, I remember now.
"I got the feeling she wanted to touch me"
The woman selling Amyls.
Shame it didnt go in. I guess they think more about pacing when making a movie then the hardcore fans like us.
Some of my favourite parts are the slow contemplative scenes when he is more like Thompson than Duke.
The scene with all the hippie news footage when he talks about the "high water mark" really makes me think about what I missed.

Yeah, i have read the book toooo many times. I read it IN Death Valley, on that very road (probably the same road)
I think those scenes is where Depp really got a hold of the sense of what Hunter was all about.
The music really made it happen too. Sets the mood. Who sung the one song that went with the 'high water mark' scene?
If you want to read a tribute I wrote about my time in Vegas-LA called 'Fear and Loathing in Disneyland' let me know

i'll read it my friend. read the book in four days first time.

Those were amyls. Mescal is tequila. There was something in the amyl, you have to crack 'em in half.
FUN FACT: The bartender is Ron Howard's father.
GONZO4Sheriff 3 years ago 4
Yes you are right. Shit my mistake. I wonder who gave you the thumbs down.
Ghostontherun 3 years ago 2
yeah, but mescaline is not tequila.
hitman6833 3 years ago
No...but MESCAL is, see? Fluent in hallucinogens, but you need a lesson in booze...
GONZO4Sheriff 3 years ago
The problem is that Mescal is NOT tequila... it is similar, from the same plant, but it is not the same thing...
