  • Thumbs up if you tried looking up this song,After watching that one episode of The Twilight Zone

  • Hey, has anyone here heard of the "Clock of the Long Now"? It's a massive timepiece tower that is set to function seamlessly for ten thousand years. They're stuffing it away in a West Texas mountain to prevent wear and tear, and it's really amazing.

I read about it recently and immediately thought of this song.

  • 12 people like Justin Bieber,Friday and are mother fuckers

  • My Mum use to sing this when I was little and I remember finding it incredibly sad, even as a small child.

  • Don't know why I always end up crying when I listen to this song!. Great!!! Tks

  • grand fathers are ok

  • this reminds of elementary school!

  • this reminds me of church

  • It rang an alarm in the dead of the night

An alarm that for years had been dumb

And we knew that his spirit was plumbing for flight

That his hour of departure had come.

Still the clock kept the time with a soft and muffled chime

As we silently stood by his side

    But it stopped, short,

Never to go again, when the old man died.

  • @stranger52699 CLOCK sir CLOCK!!! O_O

  • Morbid!

  • It made me cry O.o

  • @anytaluz wow pussy

  • I always liked this song because it sounds like the story of a man whose life was probably stable and very kind to him - 90 years spent with this beloved clock his parents apparently bought...a grandchild who had loved him and known him well enough to tell his story...someone with him when he died who knew him well enough and had enough presence of mind to notice that he and the clock stopped at the same time...sounds like a good life. I hope I'm that blessed.

  • I heard this song on Wii music and that was the worst game ever.

  • Don't make yourselves too sad - the old man was ninety when he died after all, pretty good innings, good long life :)

  • i love this song i enjoy it

  • SO sad!

  • I used to go to sleep to this song

  • my grandafather's cock

  • This song was inspired by a true story 100 years ago. Two Jenkins brothers managed George otel in England. The hotel had purchased a longcase clock that had perfect time each day, an unusual trait of these usually inaccurate clocks. The day one brother died, the clock slowed down. Repairs failed. The very minute the last brother died, the clock stopped, never to run again. No repairs. This also inspired the term "grandfather clock". All lyrics to this song can be found on wikipedia.

  • @brats817 So is this where Henry Clay Work got his Idea for the poem? (1876)

  • @Jm4steam That is correct. It's a true story. It is what inspired this song.

  • wow, this song brings back memory.

  • There are at least two other verses to this song that I came across at one time. I also think of my own grandfather when I hear this song...it really is rather poignant.

  • Awww poor old man, poor clock. :( So sad, but at least they shared a great bond and are now in heaven together.

  • They don't actually play the song in the Twilight Zone. They mention it, however in an episode. However, in American Mc Gee's Alice, it is played as part of the "I'm not Edible" composition.

  • Thumbs up if you first heard this on the twilight zone.

  • Damn this is close to the version I learned as child, but not quite

  • I'm 33 years old and I find this very beautiful, so beautiful I almost cried.

  • All the man died. Better old, than young

  • thats sad but it was a sweet ending he got to be with the clock and watch it forever

  • My baby son is very like this tune and animation^^ I watching the animation with baby

  • I had a babysitter when I was small, and she used to sing this song for me. I had forgotten it until my little brother started playing it on cello... I burst into his practice room one day when he was playing and screamed at him that our old babysitter used to sing it for us... when he played it again I sang it with him and about halfway through he just about dropped his cello! Funny how you remember things from childhood so vividly.

  • Great I searched for such a video so long and finally I found it.

Well done. Great animation :D Thumbs up

  • Very nice...

  • ... a clock actually stopped on the day of my Grandfather's death...

It wasn't a grandfather clock, and it was small enough for the shelf... and it was battery powered and wasn't bought on the day he was born... but you get the idea.

  • what a lovely version of the song. lovely voice too.

  • i know how to play this on piano COOL

  • my grandfathers clock was too large for the shelf so it stood ninety years on the floor

it was taller by half than the old man himself though it weight not a penny weight more

it was bought on the morn of the day that he was born and was allways his treasure and pride

but it stopped...short...never to go again when the old man died!

Will miss you grandpa even though i wasn't old enough to get to know you ='(.

  • so sad but i lovv ve it

  • The old man reminds me of a guy that was always at the baseball games in Cedar Rapids. Miss ya Bud.

  • This version is much too short. It doesn't even get to the real tear jerking lyrics. The original song really builds up emotionally to it's final moving verse.
