There was always something special about this song since I heard it as a child. This song is still amazing to this day, and will always be until the end of time.
I didn´t know this song and then I heard it in a nintendo-wii-game of my brother. I loved it since the first second. But in my opinion, the version without a voice is better.
Anyone know how to change the Night Silencer on the grandfather clock? the night silencer that is set on my grandfather clock is when it hit 10:00 PM it will stop chime until 7:00 Am how i change the night silencer to stop at the chime at 8:00 PM to 7:00 AM i sleep very early so i don't want to go to my clock every day to silence it during night. Is there a way? Please reply back thank you very much!
This song makes me sad. My dad used to sing it to me on car journeys. Years later, I had a Japanese 'friend' in my car with me and I sang this song. To my amazement, she started singing it in Japanese.
I used to sing this song as a child in elementary school and I want to dedicate it to my grandfather who passed away on Wednesday this week and was buried today Sunday. Cherish the time you have with your grand parents folks. Rest In Peace Grandpa.
Hey, has anyone here heard of the "Clock of the Long Now"? It's a massive timepiece tower that is set to function seamlessly for ten thousand years. They're stuffing it away in a West Texas mountain to prevent wear and tear, and it's really amazing.
I read about it recently and immediately thought of this song.
This brings great memories back. In the 50's on new years eve in Cardiff my father would sing this song as we would visit houses in Manor Way Whichurch after he had had a few drinks with all the neighbours.
My grandfather died when I was 2. Though I didn't really know him I love him dearly :) all my family says that I have the same looks and personality as him, if only I could see it for myself.
I always liked this song because it sounds like the story of a man whose life was probably stable and very kind to him - 90 years spent with this beloved clock his parents apparently bought...a grandchild who had loved him and known him well enough to tell his story...someone with him when he died who knew him well enough and had enough presence of mind to notice that he and the clock stopped at the same time...sounds like a good life. I hope I'm that blessed.
This song was inspired by a true story 100 years ago. Two Jenkins brothers managed George otel in England. The hotel had purchased a longcase clock that had perfect time each day, an unusual trait of these usually inaccurate clocks. The day one brother died, the clock slowed down. Repairs failed. The very minute the last brother died, the clock stopped, never to run again. No repairs. This also inspired the term "grandfather clock". All lyrics to this song can be found on wikipedia.
There are at least two other verses to this song that I came across at one time. I also think of my own grandfather when I hear this song...it really is rather poignant.
They don't actually play the song in the Twilight Zone. They mention it, however in an episode. However, in American Mc Gee's Alice, it is played as part of the "I'm not Edible" composition.
I had a babysitter when I was small, and she used to sing this song for me. I had forgotten it until my little brother started playing it on cello... I burst into his practice room one day when he was playing and screamed at him that our old babysitter used to sing it for us... when he played it again I sang it with him and about halfway through he just about dropped his cello! Funny how you remember things from childhood so vividly.
Aww, this is such a beautiful song, but it's so sad! Oh, the Japanese version should be in the "related videos." I especially like that version; it's a little longer.
My maternal grandfather died before I was born, and my paternal grandfather died when I was in six grade. T_T I really miss them~!! DX
@babyjunandme look up Johnny Cash singing this song here on utube. He does an awesome job and look up the lyrics in wikipedia under my grandfathers clock. My father, who passed away 2 years ago, used to sing this song to all of us kids when we were little, and he sang it to my children. Its a bittersweet song, but it was my Daddy's song..,I am now 52.

... a clock actually stopped on the day of my Grandfather's death...
It wasn't a grandfather clock, and it was small enough for the shelf... and it was battery powered and wasn't bought on the day he was born... but you get the idea.
I remember learning this song when I was very young, and I didn't know why but I always felt like crying at the part "and it stopped. short. never to go again when the old, man, died."
cool i play oboe and my friends play flute and they are playing this on flute at a concert, we are in 6th grade, they wanted me to play with them but I wasn't ready to play grandfathers clock on oboe, because I was overpowering the flutes, I was to loud compared to them.

It rang an alarm in the dead of the night
An alarm that for years had been dumb
And we knew that his spirit was plumbing for flight
That his hour of departure had come.
Still the clock kept the time with a soft and muffled chime
As we silently stood by his side
But it stopped, short,
Never to go again, when the old man died.
