the reason he is doing that is so he doesnt go off track. even though its his song, if he goes out of sinc with his "banjo" player, he can loose track. lots of artists do this

This song is based on the play Madame Butterfly, which Rivers wept uncontrollably when he watched it for the first time. It's about a sailor that made false promises to a young girl for sex. Rivers relates this to himself. He was over in Japan once and slept with a young girl who loved him and made promises to return and so on. He promised her that it wasn't a one night stand even though he knew that it was and he realized how much he hurt her. The butterfly in this song is that naive girl.

rivers is so funny. obviously he's sung the song hundreds of times, but he's still glancing at the lyric sheet every 3 seconds.

im sure he was really nervous. i watched this interview he did and he seemed like a really shy introverted guy. i wouldnt be surprised if he gets so nervous he forgets his own lyrics. thats just rivers :)

he has written so many songs, i doubt he could remember any random ones that kids want to play with him at a record store. kudos to him for doing this though, he's really cool about being famous.
