If the video continued I bet you would find that the guy that stepped off the locomotive reached down and grabbed a few hands full of sand off the ground to throw on the rails.
I had to do this on a tourist railroad many times. Usually just a few hand full of sand will get you going again.
Overweight - too much load on and needs to double up. The driver is told by a warning in the cab of slipping giving him the chance to correct it. The fact that he slipped so much shows that the driver was either not checking the instrument panel correctly or is just bad
How can a loco be overweight? The weight is needed for starting tractive effort so I don't know how a loco can be overweight. Dont know why people say Peds are overweight. If the weighed about 60 tonnes (like you'd expect for something with 1470hp) then their starting tractive effort would be too low for anything but passenger trains and the lightest freights.
I know of some 31s that have the little white light that comes on when the wheels are slipping, not sure if all of them do. You can feel it if you are a driver anyway, because accelerating just feels different.
You can certainly know if the wheels are slipping on the loco and you are a passenger. drinks go flying lol
The engine is basically the same English Electric V12, but without the intercooler found on the 37. Also, only 2 of the 3 axles on each bogey are powered.
Very similar. Both have V12 English Electric engines. The 31 has a 12SVT of 1470hp and the 37 has a 12CSVT of 1750hp-with the increase in power due to a higher degree of supercharging. Class 31s were built originally with 1250-1365hp V12 Mirrlees engines but were re-engined during the late 1960s.
Their overall design had been subject for much criticism because they were overweight, underpowered and sluggish but they have lasted well in view of their robustness and lower running costs.
The 31's were certainly underpowered! I remember one of these leaving Peterborough in the1970's on the 1830 KX -Leeds/Bradford (load 13). It crawled past the parcels depot more than 20m late..God knows how fast it climbed Stoke Bank !
(Pantomime mode) Oh yes they are (/Pantomime mode) - Well, some of them anyway - the UK does have some beautiful trains, but the class 31 certainly isn't one of them. (PS - as the guy who approves these comments i'm willing to let the pantomime continue if you keep it civil...)

Had the same problem with a 31 going up Okenshaw Bank onto the Midland Railway at Crofton. We had 30 empty HTV's on, going to Grimy.
Half way up the bank we were grinding the rails, with sparks from all wheels.
I was the guard, and we sanded the rail with our tea mugs. The sand was from the loco boxes.
Class 31's would grind the rail any time if the rail was wet.
31's were bad riders at owt over 45mph, and the handbrake would skin your knuckles if you were not carefull.

Can the driver know if wheels are slipping?
How can a locomotive be "overweight"?
Thank you.

Aside from the noise and the speedo going crazy, there's a yellow bulb that lights when the wheels are slipping.

No sanders?

This unit sounds very similar to a class 37, does it share the same prime mover?
choirboyfromhell1 2 years ago
they both have EE power units, but the engines themselves are different. The 37 has a 12CSVT whereas the 31 has just a 12SVT. Hope that helps!

What causes wheelslip?
1madaboutguitar 2 years ago
Wheel slip is caused by lack of friction between the wheels and the rails.

The type was built 1958-1962 - so some members will be 50 years old this year.
