  • Ruth Ann Swenson, like Joan Sutherland, is a singer's singer.

  • big beautiful woman, big beautiful voice. we need more of her.

  • This is wonderful- i love it.

  • NADIE CON MALA TECNICA VOCAL PODRÍA HABER LLEGADO CANTANDO A LA EDADQUE LO HIZO LA sUTHERLAND,INDEPENIENTEMENTE DEL GUSTO PERSONAL DE UD. BIGUS

  • I too think Joan Sutherland is the greatest soprano to date, taken all round. But Ruth Ann comes closer to Joan's perfection, I think, than any diva singing today. Lots of similiarities between the two.

  • i dont think joan was the greatest or even in the top 10 really of all time i think she was just overrated bigtime. she had some really bad technical problems ie. the tone swallowing that led to early wobble, etc. she was just super famous like callas but like callas had pretty poor technique compared to many such as ruth ann here.

  • what control. it's like she has a speaker at the back of her throat

  • hey they are all different voices.. love ruth annes

  • Brava

  • only someone with the dreaded so-called-perfect 'fixed' pitch could think that she is "sharp". her slight leaning towards the sharp edge of the pitch serves the underlying harmony perfectly, leading towards the next chord in the progression. god save us all from all the youtube experts.

  • she's a wonderful singer!!!

  • She is good singer and great performance!!!! If anyone want to compare, and live your musical life in recording then do it. It's unfair to list other great singer in front then say some mean word. Yes, those big name we all knew. I enjoy this video, thank you for posting and I am looking forward her performance in CA!!!

  • joan sutherland is and always will be the greatest soprano to live.

  • I like her vocie ,but I like more gruberova

  • shes great, but if you listen to some of her videos, the high notes are almost always sharp, the Eb at the end of this VERY sharp.

  • I like it sharp :) If it was effortless there'd be no pain, no suffering in it.

  • i dont really think lackluster intonation is the best way to instill emotion into one singing...haha

  • that's funny coming from a Dessay fan, who's nasal French technique is beyond anyone anyone else's sharp notes!

  • dessay sings in tune dude, that was a petty, irrelevent counter.

  • Really? I find Dessay often flat and wobbly. I just don think sheś an example on any level of high quality vocal production.

  • vocal production is debatable, intonation is not. swenson is consistently sharp, the Eb at the end of this is, scary. intonation does not tend to be someting dessay is criticized for

  • Oh == you meant sharp as in off pitch, I meant sharp as in... you know, Dessay, Fleming, Sutherland SHARP. (eg. Netrebko, Gruberova, etc. is not sharp).

Ok, then I agree, she did sing the Eb off pitch!

  • the last thing I want to be in mean, but Netrebko just is too into herself.

Her Met Lucia.........she might as well have been plastic............

Good looks will only get you so far......

  • absolutely great singing. beats Netrebko any time !

  • I fell in love with opera when I watched this video.

  • I fell in love with opera when I watched this video.

  • Wow. That was goosepimple material.

SHe deserves every accolade she gets, and I am sure Richard Bonynge, Mr. Joan Sutherland, would agree with me.

We are so blessed to be able to hear such beauty and talent.

  • A moving and brilliant rendition.

  • GREAT!!

  • I agree

  • Beautiful aria beautifully sung- the dress is a disaster.

  • Who cares about her dress... lol

  • Ruth Ann is one of my all time favorite opera singers.

Her interpretation here of Elvira is very remarkable.

When she begins "Qui la voce" it always gives me chills.

  • She's brilliant. That's all there is to it. What a top register!! And spotless coloratura!! Wonderful.

  • Though I prefer her 1993 performance in the red dress.

  • Thank you so much for posting miss Swenson's Qui la voce.

Her interpetation and singing is the most exqisite.

I love her singing and Richerd Bonning's conducting makes it even better.

    Absolutely sublime!
