Have heard in another docu that Lugosi deliberately said "ahhh shit" as a joke to crack up the crew and was shocked to see it in the final cut. These films were no-budget one-week productions with lots of first takes, improvisations, and very little editing.
Aw please, can we just leave off the racist/racial comments? I grew up watching the East Side kids. Never was the black guy treated like anything else except a member of the gang. As a black woman I say 'give it a rest'! And just enjoy the films.

lol i have this movie on tape somewhere haha, that black guy throws rice at a wedding but it's a big glob of cooked rice instead of dry rofl, it's hilarious
I'd like to think Bela knew what he was doing! As for any racial stereotypes, I can assure you, Satch made Scruno here look like a brain surgeon by comparison--and it's one of the few film series of it's day that featured an African American integrated with a group of whites (and this should not even be an issue, but I know it's an automatic, knee-jerk reaction for people viewing something like this clip to make it an issue without even having seen the series of films).
Although he probably didn't say 'shit' it's still funny because it sounds like it (not to mention if he did say 'Oh shit' because he was being found out by the sneeze it would be one of the first times shit was said on screen)
Oh and as for Lugosi it's true. I've enjoyed him even in movies like Bela Lugosi Meets a Brooklyn Gorilla. When I first saw him as the Monster in Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman I originally thought that was him making mistakes, but I forgot it was a revised script which made him look sillier because of the missing scenes. He deserved better though. Typecasting isn't always bad as Karloff says, but Lugosi should be credited for more than just Dracula. He had a charm to him.
@themovieguy364 As far as FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLF MAN goes, I personally consider Lugosi the best non-Karloff monster. Sure he stumbles around, and practically created the view of the monster we see on kids cartoon shows, but it wasn't his doing. And when you watch that movie with the understanding that this monster is supposed to be blind, you see that Lugosi is doing his job very well.
@ebkurd You think racism is dead? Ask Jews what they think. Ever been to S. America? How about Mexico? Color plays an important role in those places. Lighter skinned people get the better jobs as the Indian blooded Hispanics starve. So don't wine to me about racism. If you don't like white movies, then watch your black ones. All seven of them. LOL
@acfinney Well, deciphering your, ahem, "English," you're stating that all countries have racism going on at some level. And? Look, Scab, you're an idiot AND a fuckin' low-life racist pig fucker. NOTHING is going to change that. You will die as you live---useless. However, I totally get a kick out of seeing you shiver in fear while you watch your despicable, racist world dissolve right before your ignorant, pig fuckin' eyes. Lol! Enjoy, Scab.

No, Karloff wasn't a bad person, and Lugosi did not resent him. I read that Lugosi was naturally jealous having turned down the role of the monster, but there was no hatred between them. Karloff's daughter and Lugosi's son have both said that they got along just fine when they worked together, but never became close due to their different backgrounds(Karloff was British, Lugosi was Hungarian). Karloff was a true gentleman, and even said that Hollywood was wrong to misuse Lugosi's true talent.
@MrWesdotcom you are correct both of them were great actors and fine men its a shame that bela got the shaft from jewish holywood im sure he hated them not borris
@mavivirgie Agreed, I'm sure it was Hollywood Lugosi must've resented. All Karloff did was play the part. Hating Karloff for that would've been really childish, which is one reason why I know he didn't. Any source I've read on Lugosi says he was very much the gentleman. The producers in Hollywood were the ones who turned their backs on him, and Lugosi would have a right to be mad at them.
Actually Lugosi never even turned down the role. He didn't like it, but he tried out for it. But they said he jsut didn't look right in the make-up and denied him At the time he was fine with it but when Karloff became a star he tried to make up for it by never turning down ANY role which led to some very bizarre to say the least pictures. Nonetheless he always did his best despite any bad material and did well I think.
@themovieguy364 I've heard it both ways. I've heard it from many sources(including Bela Lugosi Jr.) that Lugosi didn't like the makeup and the fact that he had no lines, and after he tried out, he turned down the role. I've also heard it like you say it, and I've heard that from many sources too, that Lugosi and Robert Florey were dropped by Universal for Karloff and James Whale(I know the part of Florey and Whale is true, but I'm not sure which Lugosi one is the truth. Both are likely)
Ah yes I forgot that whole thing with Whale and Florey. That's interesting stuff. Actually speaking of Karloff's fame I read that supposedly Whale like Lugosi had a bit of a fall after his star rose above him in the media. He was a fantastic director, but apparently once those days were over he drowned himself. It was mainly a feeling that he "made" Karloff like Frankenstein made the Monster. He apparently was a bit rough on the set. Great director though.
@themovieguy364 Yes, it is very sad, but Whale did end up drowning himself. He was a very talented director, and his movies are still watched all these years later.
@themovieguy364 You're right though, Lugosi was an excellent actor. No matter how bad the movie was, I've never seen Bela Lugosi give a bad performance.
I think what hindered Bela most was his identification with Dracula (he did it so well) whereas Boris got his start under heavy make up, but even he had to struggle the typecasting (but he always was grateful for the role that had given him his big break). Like his contemporary, Paul Lukas (who also was from the same part of Hungary as Lugosi), I think had Lugosi made his name in non-horror films originally, he would have had more roles. I have an autographed photo of Lugosi that I treasure.
No, Boris was actually a very kindly fellow and fond of children. He even would dress up as Santa Claus and visit orphanages. I think most of these "horror" stars were pretty much the opposite of their screen persona. Maybe it takes a nice person to know how to play an evil one!
I love old "Spooky house" comedies - they're so much fun. And of course Bela didn't actually say "Ah Sh*t" - it's just his outrageous accent that makes it sound that way - it's the same thing that makes the line in "Bride of the Monster" that reads "Lobo is as gentle as a kitten" sound like "Lobo is as gentle as a kitchen." I love Bela.

Poor Bela. Staring in garbage like this. I HATE this era of movies sometimes, for their "ooooh massa I'm just a wacky darky" portrayl of black people. Indefensible. And I'm a moral relativist too.
OK,reading all of this miss-information is driving me nuts. The guy dusting the paintings name is "Ernie Sunshine Sammy Morrison" he was a child star at the Roach studios, worked with Harold Lloyd and was in the 1st generation of the "Our Gang Comedies" in the 1920's.
He is wrong He says "hopsing" (which is indeed pronounced hop sing or hops ing) and it's the word we say on The Ponderosa when the Cartwrights sneeze! We have it in Carson City as well, only that we pronounce it "hop sing " or "hops ing ". Stop misinterpreting things and stop looking for things that are not there...
thisnis the funniest thing i've ever seen...not because of the swearing...but because of that dudes facial expression and high piched scream!!! lmao!!!
The guy doing the dusting in front of Bela Lugosi (Willie Best) that falls on the sofa played in the movie "High Sierra" 1941 w/ Humphrey Bogart and Ida Lupino.
Willie Best was so good in that movie. He stole ever scene he was in. He could cross one eye and he was so funny!!! It's on TCM all the time, a great movie!
I think this was Ida Lupino's first movie. The last time I saw her act was on "Charlie's Angels" 1976/77 1st season. Ida seem to be playing herself. An elderly movie star.
You guys are nuts. Bela Lugosi is Hungarian (so am I) and he says "hapci" (pronounced "hoptzi" or "hop-tzee"), which is what you say in Hungarian when someone sneezes.
By the way I don't get the big deal even if he swears - so what??
He is right! He says "hapci" (which is indeed pronounced hoptzi or hop-tzee) and it's the word you say in Hungarian when you sneeze! We have it in Romanian as well, only that we pronounce it "haptziu" or "haptzee". Stop misinterpreting things and stop looking for things that are not there...
Don't get so offended. Not everyone knows "hapci" so that is what we heard. I knew it wasn't what he really said, but the thought just made me chuckle.
I wouldn't imagine Mr. Lugosi cursing like that *My romanticized version of him, I'm sure he's cursed his share* especially in such an old-time movie. That's what the big deal is.
More like Auschven...the "itz" of Auschwitz would have definately been heard more clearly if he did say the name of the Nazi concentration camp: his accent. hungarian, and way of speaking would have forced the "itz" much more strongly.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The more I listen to it, the more it sounds like Auschwitz. I mean, the fact that the dude's black might have something to do with it. Yeah, I just worked that out.

OK, ok. I'll take your word for it. But I would still rather believe he said ''ah, sh*t''!

Yes he was, first "Sunshine Sammy" then "Farina" then "Stymie" and last Buckwheat!
rawdog001 3 years ago
OK,reading all of this miss-information is driving me nuts. The guy dusting the paintings name is "Ernie Sunshine Sammy Morrison" he was a child star at the Roach studios, worked with Harold Lloyd and was in the 1st generation of the "Our Gang Comedies" in the 1920's.
rawdog001 3 years ago
So he was Farina's predecessor?

curbwatch 3 years ago 2
He is wrong He says "hopsing" (which is indeed pronounced hop sing or hops ing) and it's the word we say on The Ponderosa when the Cartwrights sneeze! We have it in Carson City as well, only that we pronounce it "hop sing " or "hops ing ". Stop misinterpreting things and stop looking for things that are not there...

By the way I don't get the big deal even if he swears - so what??
ryker25 3 years ago 13
I think ryker25 is right! He says "hapci!", which means sneeze in Hungarian.
hokifanatikus 3 years ago 4
He is right! He says "hapci" (which is indeed pronounced hoptzi or hop-tzee) and it's the word you say in Hungarian when you sneeze! We have it in Romanian as well, only that we pronounce it "haptziu" or "haptzee". Stop misinterpreting things and stop looking for things that are not there...

I just posted the same point, then saw your post....!
7beers 3 years ago
Don't get so offended. Not everyone knows "hapci" so that is what we heard. I knew it wasn't what he really said, but the thought just made me chuckle.
I wouldn't imagine Mr. Lugosi cursing like that *My romanticized version of him, I'm sure he's cursed his share* especially in such an old-time movie. That's what the big deal is.
MansonLove1301 3 years ago 2
@ryker25 i know right im american and even if he did say oh shit who cares he's the best he can say whatever he wants

More like Auschven...the "itz" of Auschwitz would have definately been heard more clearly if he did say the name of the Nazi concentration camp: his accent. hungarian, and way of speaking would have forced the "itz" much more strongly.

The more I listen to it, the more it sounds like Auschwitz. I mean, the fact that the dude's black might have something to do with it. Yeah, I just worked that out.
