The BBC didn't believe in archiving back then. They thought it was a waste of space and they encouraged session tapes to be wiped and re-recorded over to save on tape. They thought rock/pop music was a passing fad, not something that had any long term value.
It is indeed a still picture of Nick playing live. I first recall seeing it published in the late 1970s in a fringe UK music magazine called 'Dark Star'.
So much in the 60's was 'Lost' - Nick Drake; Dr Who; Dad's Army - Easy in hindsight to determine what is classic, less so then. Just be thankful that something has been saved.
I'm amazed that this wasn't kept. There's so much John Peel sessions stuff out there. Why not Nick? Still, it's great to have this, thanks for uploading...A
Someone...somewhere... must have the complete session. Maybe they don't even know it. There might be a tape in a box that nobody has listened to for 40 years.
how the fuck could anyone wipe a nick drake recording. what the fuck is wrong with some people? do they not have the slightest clue what true genius really is?
@carlose0318 They didn't back then. It's too bad it hasn't in all its completeness.
I see that one person has pretty much written this off as unimportant. That person seems to be an apologist for the BBC. He then insults all of us with a comment about we going loopy for a tape of Nick belching. I think we can write that individual off as somebody with "problems".
Nick was genius of course. It's sad that these Peel Sessions didn't. Great to hear Nick live however briefly.
The fact is that the BBC, being a public service, had to reuse tape to minimise cost to the taxpayer. Also, it needs to be borne in mind that "popular" music (which in the minds of the moguls of the day had no subdivisions as such) was seen as a passing fad of no permanent value. This stuff is good, but to my mind adds nothing to the Drake canon as such... we have the albums Nick released and these are the best. Some fans would go loopy for a tape of Nick Drake belching...
The best? I would agree that there have been a lot of great singer song writers from England over the years, but I wouldn't go as far as saying you have the best. Then again, everyone has their own opinion.

The entire session is missing, believed wiped. The above are all that's left until maybe someone unearths a cassette (or maybe a reel-to-reel...!) off-air recording of the entire show.
Stranger things have happened, so fingers crossed.
his guitar playing on three hours is f**king mind blowing! and that voice. Thanks so much for uploading this. You made a happy Nick Drake fan even happier...A
