Introduction to the Waveform Monitor in Final Cut Pro

Quick question. As I'm scrolling through my video file to see how the waveform looks at certain times (deepest black/and brightest brights), the waveform doesn't move smoothly for some odd reason. Infact, it doesnt move what-so-ever until I release my video scanning and wait for the waveform to tell me during that frame what the brights/darks are. Do you know why this may be occuring?
