  • lol he's gonna rape her when i first saw this movie BUT I STILL LOVE

  • whats up with that part 5:16 to 5:34. gerard buttler is way better.

  • I swear, what are some of you people thinking! Gerard makes a better phantom in my opinion. I like his singing way better.

  • The entire movie fails so bad I'll just settle to the (good) soundtracks. Leave it to Joel Schumacher to remove all that's good from the musical and turn it into some sort of chick flick. Michael Crawford brought sensuality to the character in the play, but he still was the Phantom, with a plausible deformity, not a sunburn.

  • sorry but Michael sounds like an absolute whimp & lacks the strength, intimidation, anger & darkness that the Phantoms character was supposed to have, if you're going according to the book. He just sounds silly & like he's trying too hard to be something he's not

  • @ItsKamkam I'll take it you've never seen the actual show. Do you know why Phantom worked? Because of Michael. He not only reinvented the character, but put a lot of effort into the making of the show itself. If anyone else, like Steve Harley, had gotten the role for good, it would have closed the same year it opened.

I dare you to find a bad review of Michael's performance in any respectable newspaper of the time. And don't even get me started on the book, which you obviously have never read.

  • The phantom is so Hot so so so hot

  • Gerard Butler's MOTN is probably one of the worst things I've ever heard tbh....totally carried by cut away's so you can't see him singing and auto-tune. Hideous.

  • I like the original gerard butler voice better... it's what i'm used to... sure Michael may have a better voice... but it doesn't look or sound right with these videos

  • doesnt matter what his body looks like. he is supposed to be a hideous creature who inspires Christine with his voice and then he falls in love with her. yes of course butler has a better body, this is hollywood. ..apparently you dont understand anything about this musical...damn shame.

  • I can't believe I used to like Gerard Butler more than Michael Crawford! So glad I came to my senses! :)

  • I grew up with the Michael Crawford version so Butler's missed pitches and rough singing was an affront to what I wanted out of PotO. That and I didn't expect the changed lyrics. Butler is an actor who was taught to sing for this role. Crawford was a singer who was taught to act. I think it's obvious who is the better singer (Crawford), but who is the better phantom is hard to decide, since Crawford is retired and we've got Butler's performance on DVD.

  • Much as I love Michael Crawford I dont think hes the best, very good but not the best, Ramin Karimloo is the best by far in my opinion closely followed by Gerry because the 'rocky' quality of his voice actually works quite well, Earl Carpenter was extreemly good too

  • 6:40-6:50= best little music solo ever!

  • NOOOOO WHAT THE FUUUCK!!!1 I WANT GERARD BUTLER!!!!!

  • @ThePandazRule Me Too. But he is too old! :P

  • ok the voice dubs ruined this movie >.<

  • did that exact same replica of christene moved O_O; or is it just me... cause I'm freaking out

  • Michael Crawlford is too theatrical for a movie. This is a movie. Gerard Butler please. Thumbs down.

  • @whiskerstea yes very good point, thats exactly what it is :)

  • Gerard Butler will always make a better phantom and does a much better job in the movie singing than that of Michael Crawford and everyone has their own opinion but Gerard certainly has the damn better body. Just watch him in 300. Yes he is so much better in this song than Michael Crawford. I'll go back to watching those videos. Sorry Michael you just dont have it for me.

  • @robin729651 "has the damn better body"

    ..lol

  • @robin729651 Very true, especially since the point of the Phantom is his hot bod. Silly people, thinking it was about technical vocal ability to sing on pitch, or the fact that he had a horrific skeletal face, had grown up in freak shows, worked as a political assassin, and was a desperate kidnapper and a somewhat disturbed, sad human being.

Nope, it's definitely about his abs.

  • @robin729651 gerards voice cant even compare. thankyou so much to the uploader for going out of your way to dub this!!!

  • O MY FREAKING GOD!!!!!!!! WHY!?!?!?!?!??! The Phantom is supposed to be grotesque not good looking!!!!! AND HIS VOICE IS SUPPOED TO BE ANGELIC NOT EAR PIERCING!!!!!! I'm sorry........... MICHAEL CRAWFORD!!!! He was a good PHantom....... Even I can sing thsi song better then him (And that saying something)

  • The part where she faints confuses me... Can anyone explain it? Although if I had to guess, it would be because she is shocked to see a figure of herself in what appears to be a wedding gown in his little lair...?

  • ooh he said the D word

  • I hate this MC version, where can i find the other one ugh?

  • WARNING

Please read before entering Phantom's territory!

Don't ever take off Erik's mask. EVER.

  • Gerard butler is better on phantom the of opera

  • Forgive me, the HD version is much better. Thank you haha.

  • Hey, why don't you remove the little HD link? Cuz... I'm fine with this on my rubbish internet connection. It's in my way.

  • @OoryanoO42 You can turn it off by hitting the button that looks like a chat bubble.

Also, the other version is available in HD, you don't have to watch it in HD. But the syncing is more precise and the overall quality a lot better. So i urge you to watch the other one

  • @phantomofopera91 Sorry, it wasn't working properly last night, and the HD version didn't lag at all. It was much better. Thanks for the upload man, sorry for the criticism. Excellent movie.

  • ugliness doesnt matter kinda like from the beauty and the beast

  • omg i need to go to the bathroom but i wanna watch the freakin movie

  • it's freaking obsessive to have a life size christine doll complete with wedding clothes hidden behind a curtain in my opinion.

  • Michael crawford was way better then gerard butler!!

  • am i the only one who died when the phantom was talking about how hes hidious but secretly wants to have beauty, and how he burns in hell just secretly wants heaven <3

  • @ 8:25 you can see Phantom worshiping the wall of penises.

  • Music Of The Night, Gerard Butler or Michael Crawford = Jizztastical.

  • well he's spozed to be "evil" so in my opinion I like GB better as the phantom MC in my opinion voice is almost to gentle to be a villain .... any way STRICTLY my opinion "braces for trolls to rip her head off"

  • Oh, really great... absolutly love it! :)

  • while MC is an amazing singer, i just think for the anger scenes (for example the song at the end of this video) he just doesnt seem as angry. Gerry was much better at that.

  • MC offered to sing the music if someone else was cast as Phantom, too bad they didn't do it. Listening to Butler massacre the score makes me want to, as one critic put it, tear out my eyeballs and stuff them in my ears.

  • closing in around you?

    secretly possess you

and is this emmy or sarah?

  • @ChristinaDestler Well, since Christine doesn't really sing during MOTN, it's Emmy. Sarah sings whenever theres a song crawford sings in.

BTW, i urge you to look at the new HD version, its much better

  • @phantomofopera91 i was wondering which line it was being sung cause in one version i heard secretly possess you and in this one closing in around you, but i know they dont sing much but when the time comes in "i remember" does emmy sing or sarah?

  • @ChristinaDestler I'd have to go back and rewatch it cus i honestly don't remember. I all i know is that in the OL Recording with MC some lyrics were different.

Also, in the dubbs, it is emmy singing during the "i remember scene", the OL track kicks in when she takes off the mask

  • closing in around you?

    secretly possess you

  • @ChristinaDestler the lyrics have changed throughout the years

  • this is so fit for michel his voice is dofter and it flows more, dont get me wrong gerard butler is good but this just suit MC

  • does anyone notice the phantom seems almost like a perv. kinda, hitting on a woman prob like 1/2 his age!

  • @girlsxred that's exactly the point, it's truly demented xD however, millions of women want to be that underaged girl right now, whether he be ok with his mask on or hideous without it.

  • some of the lipsinc is AMAZING others are close

  • @girlsxred Please check out the HD redub of this song. It's way more amazing

  • i love MC but i love butlers voice as well, i actually believe thay sound very similar, and i just love this and everypart of it!

  • @webcamguy42 and is now online!

  • @webcamguy42 The HiDef version is MUCH better!

  • omg you KILLED THE MOVIE

  • @manosby15 omg you are an idiot! If you don't like it don't watch it. That way i don't have to hear you whine about it.

BTW... MC is not a "Copy" of the POTO.. he was the FIRST POTO, and without him those with little vocal talent wouldn't have had the chance to star in a movie they didn't belong in.

  • As much as I like MC, I think Jerard Butler performed "Music of the Night" better. The song needed to be slower and softer than Michael sang it, which Butler did and did well.

  • @Buffy8Fan i agree, i also sence a small sound difference in the voice

  • how can sum1 hold a note for that long lol?

    "brava brava bravisima......."

  • @webcamguy42 It would take a lot longer than a few minutes to improve the syncing in each scene. I know because a few months after i did this i spent several weeks tweaking and fixing parts that stood out at me.. and although it looked a lot better, was still far from perfect. I consider myself quite proficient at video editing and due to the differences in tempo, lyrics, etc., makes it almost impossible for a perfect sync.

  • that motif to Don Juan Triumphant at 5:40 is so .......atonally powerful!

  • thnx im huge fan of the phantom of the opera + the normal half of his face is pretty attractive

  • I can't believe this synched up perfectly. Thanks for this. MC's voice makes it feel better.

  • G. Batler jest ogólnie super aktorem choć tak mało znanym

  • On this one I think Gerard is the better one, it just doesn't sound right with MC. Its just my opinion. This must have been torture dubbing

  • @UnlovedSage are you kidding me? this one isn't right w/o MC! If anything, GB is better for like Down Once More because the Phantom is angry

  • It's slighting odd watching this with the dub because somewhere in the back of mind, I'm just expecting the Phantom to glide across the room and move his hands as in MC's interpretation.

But hey, thanks for dubbing! I can imagine just how hellish it must have been do to this.

  • I actually prefer the 1991 version that Michael Crawford did, because his voice is much softer in that.

  • I like them both MC and GB they both have great voices, and both bring something to the Phantom.

MC's is more gentle, and relaxing. GB's is more exiting and peppy.

I heard GB first, but once I heard MC I just fell in love with both of them!

  • Michael crawford is the phantom.

Gerard butler as much as i like him, was truly awful as the phantom and whoever posted this video is a genius....This is how the song should have been sung during the movie

  • @ugalagia I know Michael Crawford is technically a better singer but I prefer Gerry's voice its sexier and more rough around the edges so u can understand why Christine is drawn to him. You get the same thing with Ramin Karimloo, and he is a trained singer like Michael Crawford but theres a slight madness about the way he plays it which is amazing. I always like to think the original is the best with these things but although Michael is extreemly good Ramin has a much more powerful voice.

  • I prefer Gerard Butler over Michael Crawford. Crawford's voice is odd and a little shaky on the high notes, and too deep on the low notes. Butler's Music of the Night is soft. So soft that when I's playing on my iPod with the volume turned up all the way, I can't really hear him. But he is an amazing singer. And that is my opinion on the subject.

  • In my opinion Michael Crawford's version of Music of the Night is more softer and angel like. Which i prefer. Unlike Butler's whose version is somewhat harsher rock an rollish. However, everyone has there own opinion.

  • i know people might hate me for this but i believe butler was better then michael i mean yes michael was great too on the stage version but the film seems to suit butler better

  • MC has stage presents, as well as in film. But butler does look gr8 in the film, apart from the excuse of deformity they gave him!

Though I do love the stage version more I think they cast the right guy for the film, but ONLY for his looks and presents (not the deformity, and to be honest thats not butlers fault!)

The way I see it Butlers keeps getting bashed, its not his fault, if his offered the role as the phantom (NB An actors dream role), his going to take it take it!

  • Well the cast recording is in no way what the real show is like that's for sure. In the show MC is amazingly active. Especially during the Final Lair scene which is really one of my favorite scenes in any musical ever. If you haven't seen them, a user on youtube has videos of his last performance where you can feel his emotions pouring out during the final lair because he knows its his final time doing it. It truly is amazing.

  • *Coughs* I feel slightly embarresed to say this considering I might get flamed at but...to each his, true?

I think Gerard did a good job, and while I like Micheal Crawford's voice I think Gerard had a more...seductive tone to it which really makes it. I alo think he looks better as Erik.

Then again, he was my first Phantom (saw this movie when I was 9 give me a break) and that may have something to do with it. Can't we all say that we adore the music and our first phantoms?

  • Well Gerard did very good because from what I've heard, he never had voice lessons before. I mean his voice is great if you consider that, but really he can never touch MC or John Owen Jones or Gary Mauer or John Cudia.

  • I agree with JOJ(He is amazing!), but he stands on his own. At least, I think so. No other Phantom can come close to another because they interpret Erik differently, Gerard focused on the emotion and trance like tones. JOJ wanted to put mostly emotion into it(he did good, I mean, Erik is a very complex character). They are each amazing in their own way.

  • I don't care what anybody has to say, Gerard was the hottest Phantom I have ever seen but he couldn't sing worth a shit, Micheal Crawford is still the best voice for the Phantom I have EVER heard.

  • Okay, so putting MC back in this thing already makes it ten times better... but even so, I'm finding that, once you've taken away Gerard's voice, this movie still could've been filmed so much more cinematically well. Everything was shot to be way too obvious. Nothing was left to the imagination.

  • I agree. I especially don't like how they explain how the phantom does everything (like the chandelier and Carlotta's voice). In the play, it's almost like magic and he's given more of a supernatural air. There's no magic in the movie.

  • agreed they never even need to show it and everything becuase it is obvious to us the phantom would do dat

  • Charlotte church should have played Christine in the movie along with crawford

  • i think emmy was an awesome christine and they can keep gerard but they need to put michael's voice in the movie cause gerard can't sing lol.

  • man, it's such a shame that Michael Crawford retired. I was lucky enough to see him and Sarah Brightman in Phantom three times in my childhood, and would gladly pay to see them again.

  • It makes me sad to know that they chose people for looks instead of musical ability :( Shumaker (sp?) is evil for convincing Andrew to choose Butler over Michael.

  • Thank... you... SOOOO... MUUUUUCH!! Best thing ever in the history of the world, ever!

  • haha glad u like it!

  • Gerard Butler as the Phantom?

    Christine wont leave him.

    Such a beauty!

  • Yowza. You know, after seeing the movie I thought I was cured of my love for the ALW musical and maybe even the entire story. But the combination of Butler's looks and Crawfords singing just undid all the hard work of Joel Schumacher. I'm back on the hook.

  • I think Mr. Butler was miscast in, at least, this version of the story of "The Phantom of the Opera". Not that he ever could have done this version (I'm not saying that), but his lack of having, IMHO, a classical sounding voice (I personally love voices like that, rather than rock-edged voices) and him being so young for the role - for me, it didn't make the characterization convincing. However, I can easily imagine him in something like "The Phantom of the Paradise" - he would do well in it.

  • I _so_ agree on the miscast bit. Not the right voice for singing (though nice speaking voice) and so handsome that the producers didn't dare mess up his face. The tragic bit: after seeing him in Dracula I was drooling to see him as a Phantom because he was so gorgously as a baddie. And then he's cast and the whole thing is pressed into the ALW mold! I'd have given a kidney to see him in an adaption of the Susan Kay book. (Directed by Peter Jackson, since I'm dreaming.)

  • This is probably my favourite version of Music of the Night ever done. the "Be.." is absolutely superb, and this isn't even Crawford's best work! He sounds absolutely phenominal live, though I've only heard him live on youtube :P Michael Crawford will ALWAYS be the true Phantom!

  • Weeks? WEEKS? You spent WEEKS on this?

For all us Phans, who I'm sure loved it just as much as I, THANK YOU!

On another note, MC is a much better singer, but Gerry made it realistic. Think about it- if you were singing an impromtu love song off the top of your head, you wouldn't sound like you were in script rehearsal, would it?

    Good nontheless.

  • Thanks.. actually the initial process took about 5 days about 4 hours a day.. then i left it alone for a while and went back over and over again to tweak it the best i could.

  • Criminy. Wow. I'm usually the hairsplitter who nitpicks about plot holes, logic jumps and historical inaccuracies, but even I wouldn't try earth logic on a musical. Otherwise he sings amazingly well for someone who's punting a boat (hard work), burning candles rising out of the water, daughter of a famous musician is rather penniless and so on and so on. But I agree that Butler put some nice acting into this.

  • Michael Crawford is the superior singer by far... yet somehow I like Butlers version of "stranger than you dreamt it" more, because Crawfords version isn't rough and powerfull enough, he kinda sounds lika a pansy (no disrespect to Crawford - he was and always will be THE PHANTOM of ther opera in my book)

  • phantomofopera91 -Brilliant!!! Can't begin to thank you for this!

  • ur quite welcome!

  • I hate butler's voice so thank god it is not him! Go MC

  • Its a pity that the official Original London Cast Recording is not Michael Crawford's best recording. He usually sounds so much better on other recordings. Other than that, its wonderful to finally hear his voice put to the movie - although in a way, I'm glad that he was never put into the movie - the way it ended up being filmed and costumed. (That's what you get when ALW hires Joel Schumacher as the director)

  • yes ive heard michael on london recordings, and hes good but its not as good as his other ones! listen to him in LA! he was pure brilliant on that run! if you type in YOU ALONE COMPARISON it comes up and click the first one and it was michaels very last performance as phantom ever and when he says you alone can make my song take flight its over now the music of the night hes practically crying! mc is my fav phantom and he should have been in the movie!! thank u so much 4 this phantomofopera91

  • Word on the movie. It's very cute and funny and in parts captivating (due to the great actors) but dear heaven, a Phantom version with Gerard Butler could have been ten times better if it hadn't been shackled to the musical script. Ah well, at least this way & thanks phantomofopera91 we get the entire musical score with added eye candy.
