@Rush1013 noooo the monkees was a tv show about a band.. and corperate thought theyd be bigger than the beetles and put out songs.. only hit they got was im a believer.. but this was a man made band for ratings.. and obviously they didnt last long :[ but the music they made was really catchy and memorable
Hahahaha, yes it was a TV show, but it was also a real band. Just because they were no TV doesn't mean they are not a band. They wrote many of their own songs and had many hits (Im a Believer, Im Not Your Stepping Stone, Last Train To Clarksville, ect.). Im not even a big fan of this band, but its extremely obvious that you do not know what you're talking about here. You spelled "Beatles" wrong by the way.
@Rush1013 yes but they were a hollywood-made show. they were branded to be beatle-esque and be successful. however they got tired of it and began coming up with their own content.
@beckypoopsrainbows69 The only hit they had was 'I'm A Believer?' Daydream Believer wasn't a hit? That would have been their biggest hit. Let alone 'Last Train to Clarkesville, Listen To The Band, Words and Mary Mary, just to name a few.
So I went to this thing the past week where I got to meet People from around the world and America. One boy I met was from Clarksville Tennessee. I told him about the song; he never heard it. This other guy who had a very considerable amount of musical knowledge never heard it either. It just baffled me. This sound was always so common to me.
NickD58: I think you are confusing the two formats. Actual performances were staged at those show's TV studios by the Beatles and recorded for re-release to other shows in different countries in 1965. In 1966, they stopped wanting to appear at the studios themselves, hence the 1st promo film was invented with PAPERBACK WRITER / RAIN while remaining in England. Either way, MTV and all other artists/bands owe a gratitude of thanks to the Fab Four for their creativity in promoting new songs.
MPLU, I am not confused at all. You need to do your homework before you lecture me about The Beatles. WCWIO/DT promos were produced at Twickenham Film Studios on Stage 3. They were never shot at the 3 TV studios, but they were sold to them. Shooting was financed by NEMS and they appointed InterTel (VTR Services), reputedly the first independent video facilities company in Europe to provide the production crew.
Dude, stop taking it personal! I am not lecturing anybody! You aren't their official historian, either! All you are is someone like me: a huge BEATLES fan! Please direct me to the source where you got your info, so I can be re-educated on their promo films. Until then, I stand by my comments......much like others have on the PAPERBACK WRITER / RAIN promo film.
Actually.....you are BOTH wrong! The Beatles released the first music video ever in April 1966 on the Ed Sullivan Show. It was: PAPERBACK WRITER / RAIN promo film (as it was known then). Check it out on YouTube.
MPLU, Are you sure about that ? I thought We Can Work It Out/Day Tripper was the first pop music video ever. It was filmed in late 1965. I saw it broadcasted on NBC`s Hullabaloo (here in the States) in late 1965/66. That was before Paperback Writer/Rain.
Weatherman1987, Rain was not the first. On 11/23/65 the WCWIO/DT shoot was produced, six months before the PR/Rain shoot. They decided to self-produce and shoot their own promo clips, then distribute them to TV stations, thereby heralding the dawn of the pop promo video age. These promo clips went out to 3 TV shows, Top of the Pops 12/65, Thank Your Lucky Stars 12/65 and Hullabaloo 1/66.
Very sure. That and others are just film clips of their performances on those type of shows. PAPERBACK WRITER /RAIN was specifically filmed for ED SULLIVAN SHOW (and others) because Beatles were getting tired of the constant traveling to fulfill appearance obligations plus they were touring and recording. This is what they came up with to ease the burden. In other words, Beatles invented the rock video format.......or using George's words: "I suppose we invented MTV."

one of my all time favourite groups ever. I am 28 and a huge Monkees fan since I saw repeats of their show on tv as a child.

The name of the song actually came from a place in Arizona Clarkdale. Hart and Boyce decided Clarksville sounded better.

I'm pretty sure that the bridge shown at 0:21 is the bridge over the Cumberland River and Riverside Drive in Clarksville, TN.

heheh Monkees never wrote or sang their songs until the end when they lost popularity. All they were was an act at start as a joke to the Beatles.

The Monkees were invented because the Beatles refused the gig.
