Is it just me or does anyone else (who has actually read the books) thik that Tyrion has Tywin's brains and before Jamie lost his hand he had Tywin's strength?
Tyrion kills Twyin because he catches him in bed with Shae, he kills Shae too(The whore), he kills them both. I can't WAIT to watch that scene when it is filmed.
@Sarnius26 he didn't killed Tywin because of Shae , he did it because of what Tywin had done with his wife Tysha. if you're going to spoil get your facts right first
@Sarnius26 well no , but the thing that tyrion could not possibly forgive is that Tywin had his real wife raped , probably HUNDREDS of times and he lied to his face telling him that Tysha was a whore. This is right because tyrion only killed him after Tywin called Tysha a whore one last time and refuse to apologize for the damage done
@Sarnius26 Not me read oll of them and here is a spoiller for you guys in the last book after kiling Kevan Lannister and Picele Varis comes fowerd whith Reygars son
*shatters glass* "there's your piece". as shakespeare said, "brevity is the soul of wit". that was one of the best actions to describe Tyrion. It's just a great metaphor.
Actually there are some good Lannisters as a matter of fact, First off Tyrion is amazing, cunning lil bastard. Kevan Lannister is an honest, just man (my favourite lannister), and Jaime is truly a good man, once you contine reading the series. If Cersei and Joffrey were to possibly die, then peace would resume, IMO
@Rhadamantys2011 I'd argue that Jamie has a strong sense of honor, but I wouldn't call him good - he pushed Bran out the window and his ego is enormous.
@GuitarMassacre well yeah , there is that. But later he comes to regret that incident and he grows to loathe his sister and his father. I know that throwing a child from a tower is not something that can be fixed by saying "I'm sorry" but at least you see Jaime changing in the inside as the story progresses
I don't normally say this, but I honestly think the series is better than the books it was based on.
Now before I'm crucified for that, let me explain why.
I've often found that with fantasy books, even the really good ones, it's often difficult for me to visualise some of the things going on in the story and with the characters.
But with this series, those problems don't exist. I'm not saying TV is a superior art form to literature, not by a long shot.
@TheJboy88 I see your point. Sometimes it`s tiring to just pause and imagine the scene in your head without music and stunning visuals to do it for you XD
@TheJboy88 I would argue that we can't talk about which is better between the series and the books , what you say is true , these actors bring to life the characters to a point that it's impossible to me to imagine Ned Stark without Sean Bean's face or Tywin Lannister without Charles Dance's. But remember that the novels are the original character and story development and we are watching a version . A very good one at that , yes. So they are not superior to either each other. Are complementar
Can't wait until Geatjon Umber makes Jaime Lannister slurp him off in front of the great sept of baelor amidst the whooping and cheering of the northmen.
@apathykillz it's one of the alternate endings of a game of thrones. it was a quickly scrapped collaboration project between George R R Martin and R.L Stine.
@fl333r Yeah that's a downside of adapting these books to a TV show: You can't see their thoughts. Another example is that Tyrion was joking when asking for Jaime to fight for him in the Vale, he was gambling that Bronn would fight for him all along. In the show it looks like he didn't have a backup plan and was gettig desperate.
In the books, his thoughts at 2:50 are as follows: ' "You have given him up for lost. You bloody bastard, you think Jaime's good as dead, so I'm all you have left." He wanted to slap him, to spit in his face, to draw his dagger and cut the heart out of him to see if it was made of old hard gold, the way the smallfolks said. Yet he sat there, silent and still.' o.O
@fl333r Actually Tyrion did exactly that, sat silent and still. In the show we cant read his thoughts which is why I initially thought that Tyrion felt a sense of respect at that point until i read the book
'There's your peace, Jauffre made sure of that when he decided to remove Ned Stark's head. You'll have an easier time drinking from that cup than you will of bringing Robb Stark to the table now'. This line proves that Tyrion is the smartest of all the Lannister's.
@0307scott Tywin is smarter. someone said in the books later something about Tywin's son not being Jamie but being Tyrion, meaning that Tywin is more of a strategic genius than a soldier.
@WallisTylerJ Tywin isn't smarter if he was he would of realised what his daughter Cersei and grandson Jauffre would do once Robert was dead. In the books when Tywin tells Tyrion "you're my son" Tyrion realizes that Tywin is only suffering to even talk to him because he's already considered Jaime a lost cause, and Tyrion is his only remaining heir. Obviously this really hurts Tyrion. Peter Dinklage captured this so subtly and brilliantly at the end of this clip/
@rmg2160 lol no he didnt, this scene is so much different from the books. first of all, in the books, Kevan was there. the goal of this scene, and the impact its meant to have on the watcher, is not to "make us hate Tywin" because he "abandoned" Jamie. the guys who made the show decided to go a different direction with it, probably to make Tywin more sympathetic, and everything from the music to Dinklage's facial expressions shows that we're supposed to go "Tywin honors Tyrion!"
I always thought it was very out of character for Tywin to have slept with Shae. He seemed like a cold man that genuinely loved his deceased wife (a big reason why he resents Tyrion.) My only theory is that Shae was disappointed by what Cersei offered her and tried to seduce Tywin to get a sweeter pot. Shae's described as being very sexy so I doubt Tywin refused her.
*Spoiler* As their aunt once tells Jamie, Tyrion is way more like Tywin than any other children of his. Tywin didn't dislike whoring in my opinion but was strict about not showing any weak points to others and keeping their name glorified. So I think he just despised being known as one who'd bed whores and did well to hide it from everyone.
@foroughshafiee Yeah you're probably onto something. I think a really sensitive spot for Tywin is the failures of his father. Since Tytos was taken to the cleaners and pussy whipped by a whore, Tywin doesn't want that same reputation.
there is a scene in the later where someone says something to Jamie in relation to Tywin's son and Jamie responds in the affirmative, to which they respond something like "Not you, Tyrion." Basically saying that Tyrion got Tywin's brains and Jamie got his fighting skill.
For all the people who are saying Tywin hate Tyrion i think you are wrong. Its really really hard and i would think almost impossible for a father to hate his children, sure he may blame him for his wife death and resent him being a dwarf. But thats not hate, also for those reasons he was hard on Tyrion but you cant say he wasnt just as hard on Jaime. Keep in mind he did marry a whore (to tywins) at a young age and though being high born he frequently visit whorehouse and its known through realm
@Xantheus07 which brings shame on House Lannister. Keep in mind that Tywin had to bring his House back from nothing. When Tywin was a boy his father was laughed at and and the servants stole from them. So he had to fight to get his families name respected. Doing so got him feared throughout the land but he also kept order and justice as was seen through his reign as hand of the king.Which of course got the Mad King to see him as a threat.
@Xantheus07 Tywinn despises Tyrion, he did and always will. And that whole Tysha business, well, read the books and you'll see Tywinn's incredible cruelty to his son.
@Bradatimrkonja Yet he never disowned him, or cast him out. Instead he fought a war because he was taking, gave him the power of Hand, tried to save his life at the trial. He was upset that Tyrion kept bring shame on House Lannister which also includes marrying below his station. Tywin brought the Lannister family back into power and respect he is upset because he kids are destroying his hard work. Even though its wrong every house would had a problem with marring the poor.
@Bradatimrkonja Of course in the end he was a hypocrite for sleeping with the same whore but Shae was supposed to have been very beautiful.Twyin was hard on all his kids but Tyrion frequently disobeyed him.Yet when he though Jaime was going to die he started to groom Tyrion for leadership of the House. If he hated Tyrion so much like everyone thinks he could of let Tyrion and his bandits die fighting against the North.
the Stark's failing was trusting honor and family. the Lannisters, while claiming to trust family, simply put the right people in the right places at the right times, which is how you win
@tearsinrain86 Oh I don't know if you pay people with love, trust and honor some of them are bound to repay it with the same thing. As stated by the line, the North remembers, it does not forget in DWD. Lannisters may know what people to place in high positions but they are never sure of their loyalty unlike the Starks and their most loyal and trusted bannermen. One good example is Tyrion to his father and Bronn to Cersei.
Tywin is still a savage, nasty piece of work. You can say he became who he is for this or that reason, but he still let himself become that person. And he has to "pay his debts" eventually.
Looking at Tywin, the casting director was brilliant in taking Dance as Tywin. He's totally worth it like Peter as Tyrion. I can't wait to see more of Tywin. Such a great character only rivaled by the young Wolf in military tactics.
More telling is the look Tyrion offers Tywin after he says "You're my son". Perfectly nuanced: encapsulates the sentiment of the book where Tyrion privately recognises that Tywin has given Jaime up for dead (since he's been captured by the Starks at this point), and thus only has Tyrion to fall back on (ignoring Cersei due to the 'weakness of her sex', as men are prone to do in a patriarchal society.
Sufficed to say, Dinklage absolutely deserved his Emmy.
@Kougeki1000 Thank you for letting me know. I am still working on getting the books in the part of the part of the world I live in now, but in the meantime...I'll watch the series.
I remember watching the first episode of the show... then the third and finding out it was a series of books. But I put it off, I didn't want the show to be spoiled... then I finished the season, and couldn't wait another year, so I caved and bought them all.
I didn't realize UNTIL watching this scene and remembering that part of the book, how much the (fantastic) books added to the show... its like, the first time that reading the books makes me want to watch the show again.
In an earlier scene Tywin snatches the wine pitcher away from Tyrion and says Jaime would never have surrendered himself so meekly. Now that Jaime has been captured and Tyrion has freed himself, he takes the pitcher and fills Tyrion's glass for him. Since he scolded Jaime for wasting his talent, status, and wealth, he has seen Tyrion masterfully exploit his own talent, status, and wealth to get himself out of seemingly impossible situations unharmed. He sees in Tyrion what he wanted from Jaime.
@Walshyman you'd think that, but in reality he's just doing what he does to everyone and is manipulating tyrion. he's using him by giving him exactly what he desires more than anything, his father's approval. he still hates tyrion and would gladly let him die. keep reading the books and you'll see.
@Walshyman what you says makes complete sense. However, the feelings Tywin has toward Tyrion are not based on reason. He has a hatred for him that is both unfounded and unwarranted. Tyrion is everything Tywin is: intelligent, manipulative, calculating, etc. but Tywin never wanted to admit that. He only wishes to acknowledge Jamie as his son/heir.
@redhairmarimo well except for the fact that Tyrion has a conscience, and his ultimate desire is to be accepted, rather than to terrify everyone into submitting to him by pure power. Small difference lol. But Tywin is awesome in his evil way, and it's also awesome that in his list of potential traitors, he lists Baelish first... at least someone other than Varys has some idea how sneaky Baelish is
@ravenouscolonelhart Sad thing is, if Tywin and Tyrion had worked together as true allies/family they could've outwitted Baelish at nearly every turn. It was working against him while also being against one another that gave him the edge.
@redhairmarimo True but you cannot blame Tywin. Tyrion killed Joanna in childbirth and him being an Imp only made him bitter towards Tyrion. Still maybe if Tyrion was born to Cat and Ned, he would have been happier.
@teh117 basically yes... Tyrion was more like Tywin in brains and attitude. It just disappointed Tywin so much that Tyrion was an Imp and that he killed Joanna in childbirth while Jaime on the other hand has the good looks of a Lannister and has traits of Kevan and the rest but still no Tywin.
@Walshyman he is not too pleased about this though. One of Tywin's sisters once remarked that it was Tyrion and not Jaime the one that was more like his father. Tywin was so angry by this that stop spoken to her for 6 months . I think that even if Tywin realizes this fact about Tyrion he is to arrogant to accept that his best traits were passed to the son he hates and despises
Tywin knows Tyrion is more his son than Jaime will ever be (meaning he's more like him than Jaime is), but he hates him for "killing" his mother and being a dwarf.
@ParkLeeNa Not the case at all, Tywin holds no love for Tyrion (explained in the book, I read it). Tywin had to send someone he could keep his eye on and control like Tyrion (as he was his son), but would've sent Jaime had he been given the chance. He's a last resort.
@Crywolf943 Didn't say he loved him. I said Tyrion is more like Tywin than Jaime is (that is also in the books, the 4th, I read it). Please try and see this beyond the first level of "Tywin hates Tyrion".
In the book, Lord Tywin calls into question pretty much every one of Joffrey's decisions, killing Eddard was madness, dismissing Ser Barristan was stupid and putting the Hound in the Kingsguard was ridiculous
@bronkoghma Is there some reason why you replied to every post from the past two months, even those that were already answered and effectively forgotten? Not only is it spammy, it's also rude to those whose answers you're needlessly gainsaying.
@Celedam i wasn't repeating everything, and i can answer to comments as old as i like. this isn't a clip where comments go to tens of thousands and 2 months isn't that much, i've once answered on a question about a name of a book more than a year old and it turned out the guy still needed the answer and was grateful. and you should spend your time in some other way than to tell people not to talk to third persosn on the internet :)
I have to wonder what Tywin was like before his wife died. I presume he always was a master strategist, but I wonder if he only became a cold-blooded dick because he lost his wife. Evidentally he loved her very much (even though she was his cousin...I guess fucking your relatives is a Lannister family tradition) and I wonder if losing her was what made him into what he is. Clearly it's why he loathes Tyrion.
I liked how Peter Dinklage played the Tyrion's internal conflict. He had one fleeting moment of validation from dear old dad, before dad reminds Tyrion that he is the one pulling the strings and that Tyrion is there only to serve his purposes.
For everyone that haven't read the books I want to clarify Tyrion's expression after Tywin says "you are my son" at the end. He is NOT thinking "my father respects me now." He is in fact thinking "my father only cares for me now because Jaime is not around" This infuriates him more than ever.
One key aspect that is felt left out here is that in the book it is made clear the only reason Tywin calls Tyrion his son is because he has already given up Jamie for dead.
@SkullakaAce He is the head of House Lannister, and the Lannisters rule the Westerlands, one of the so-called Seven Kingdoms. He is the father of Jaime, Cersei, and Tyrion, and he is the grandfather of Joffrey. He is the richest man on the continent, thanks to the many gold mines in the Westerlands.
He was also the Hand of the Mad King, Aerys Targaryen, 17 years before the story. When Robert's Rebellion began, he didn't join it until it was clear that Robert would win. (continued...)
@Celedam And when he did finally join the rebellion, he did it betraying Aerys and sacking King's Landing. The Seven Kingdoms could have split completely after the Targaryens were removed, but Tywin forced a political marriage between Robert Baratheon, the popular leader of the rebellion, and his own daughter Cersei. That held things together for the 17 years between the rebellion and the current story, but ultimately, Tywin and Cersei want a Lannister dynasty on the throne. Thus, this new war.
@Celedam... I don't think he exactly asked for a biography... "Tywin Lannister is Joffrey's grandfather, the lord and military leader of House Lannister" would have sufficed.
@Celedam Because I'm not a sperglord who thinks it's necessary to elaborate where Tywin's Lannister gold comes from, pointlessly speculating what could or could not have happened if Robert had not married Cersei, or thinks replying via two posts due to character limit is within reason.
i think twin in the tv show doesn't seems evil enough...

The Narration of the book itself is not Objective.
In fact, None of the chapters (povs) are.
So whatever you read the book in pov character's eye,
DOESN'T mean that what they feel tell is the actual truth.
On the contrary, it is The POV's characters view.
Son in the end, The Show did JUSTICE for Tywin and for several other characters.

Xantheus07 1 month ago
@Xantheus07 which brings shame on House Lannister. Keep in mind that Tywin had to bring his House back from nothing. When Tywin was a boy his father was laughed at and and the servants stole from them. So he had to fight to get his families name respected. Doing so got him feared throughout the land but he also kept order and justice as was seen through his reign as hand of the king.Which of course got the Mad King to see him as a threat.
Xantheus07 1 month ago
@Xantheus07 Tywinn despises Tyrion, he did and always will. And that whole Tysha business, well, read the books and you'll see Tywinn's incredible cruelty to his son.

@Bradatimrkonja I have read all the books i suggest you do so and pay attention to everything.
Xantheus07 1 month ago
@Xantheus07 me 2, and tywinn despises tyrion...completely, which is especially seen in the 3rd and 5th book
Bradatimrkonja 1 month ago
@Bradatimrkonja Yet he never disowned him, or cast him out. Instead he fought a war because he was taking, gave him the power of Hand, tried to save his life at the trial. He was upset that Tyrion kept bring shame on House Lannister which also includes marrying below his station. Tywin brought the Lannister family back into power and respect he is upset because he kids are destroying his hard work. Even though its wrong every house would had a problem with marring the poor.
Xantheus07 1 month ago
@Bradatimrkonja Of course in the end he was a hypocrite for sleeping with the same whore but Shae was supposed to have been very beautiful.Twyin was hard on all his kids but Tyrion frequently disobeyed him.Yet when he though Jaime was going to die he started to groom Tyrion for leadership of the House. If he hated Tyrion so much like everyone thinks he could of let Tyrion and his bandits die fighting against the North.

Good scene, but they left out the best line.
Tyrion: I made some mistakes at Joffrey's age.

the Stark's failing was trusting honor and family. the Lannisters, while claiming to trust family, simply put the right people in the right places at the right times, which is how you win
tearsinrain86 2 months ago
@tearsinrain86 Oh I don't know if you pay people with love, trust and honor some of them are bound to repay it with the same thing. As stated by the line, the North remembers, it does not forget in DWD. Lannisters may know what people to place in high positions but they are never sure of their loyalty unlike the Starks and their most loyal and trusted bannermen. One good example is Tyrion to his father and Bronn to Cersei.

Tywin is still a savage, nasty piece of work. You can say he became who he is for this or that reason, but he still let himself become that person. And he has to "pay his debts" eventually.
squamish4244 2 months ago

Sufficed to say, Dinklage absolutely deserved his Emmy.
aslyn01 3 months ago
Why does Tywin not want Tyrion to bring his 'girlfriend' to court? Surely mistresses are allowed in court?
mrsotter19 3 months ago
@mrsotter19 Tywin considers Tyrion's history of constant and exaggerated whoring a disgrace to the Lannisters, and has had enough of it with Shae.
In the book, he says something in the words of 'I'll kill you if I find you in a whore's bed again'

He sees in Tyrion what he wanted from Jaime.

xXiTouchYouXx 3 months ago
@Walshyman you'd think that, but in reality he's just doing what he does to everyone and is manipulating tyrion. he's using him by giving him exactly what he desires more than anything, his father's approval. he still hates tyrion and would gladly let him die. keep reading the books and you'll see.

@boteromi Currently reading. Don't forget, there's thousands of pages between them, lol.
Walshyman 3 months ago
@Walshyman what you says makes complete sense. However, the feelings Tywin has toward Tyrion are not based on reason. He has a hatred for him that is both unfounded and unwarranted. Tyrion is everything Tywin is: intelligent, manipulative, calculating, etc. but Tywin never wanted to admit that. He only wishes to acknowledge Jamie as his son/heir.
redhairmarimo 2 months ago
@redhairmarimo well except for the fact that Tyrion has a conscience, and his ultimate desire is to be accepted, rather than to terrify everyone into submitting to him by pure power. Small difference lol. But Tywin is awesome in his evil way, and it's also awesome that in his list of potential traitors, he lists Baelish first... at least someone other than Varys has some idea how sneaky Baelish is
ravenouscolonelhart 2 months ago
@ravenouscolonelhart Sad thing is, if Tywin and Tyrion had worked together as true allies/family they could've outwitted Baelish at nearly every turn. It was working against him while also being against one another that gave him the edge.
ShadowSonic2 2 months ago
@redhairmarimo True but you cannot blame Tywin. Tyrion killed Joanna in childbirth and him being an Imp only made him bitter towards Tyrion. Still maybe if Tyrion was born to Cat and Ned, he would have been happier.
LadyLyanna25 2 months ago
@Walshyman wait so he wanted tyrions mind and attitude in jaimes body?...
teh117 2 months ago

ParkLeeNa 4 months ago
@ParkLeeNa Not the case at all, Tywin holds no love for Tyrion (explained in the book, I read it). Tywin had to send someone he could keep his eye on and control like Tyrion (as he was his son), but would've sent Jaime had he been given the chance. He's a last resort.
Crywolf943 4 months ago
@Crywolf943 Didn't say he loved him. I said Tyrion is more like Tywin than Jaime is (that is also in the books, the 4th, I read it). Please try and see this beyond the first level of "Tywin hates Tyrion".
ParkLeeNa 4 months ago
In the book, Lord Tywin calls into question pretty much every one of Joffrey's decisions, killing Eddard was madness, dismissing Ser Barristan was stupid and putting the Hound in the Kingsguard was ridiculous

Clearly it's why he loathes Tyrion.
mst3KGf 4 months ago
@mst3KGf tywin became "a cold-blooded dick " because of his father, not his wife.

I liked how Peter Dinklage played the Tyrion's internal conflict. He had one fleeting moment of validation from dear old dad, before dad reminds Tyrion that he is the one pulling the strings and that Tyrion is there only to serve his purposes.

Shauddi 4 months ago
For everyone that haven't read the books I want to clarify Tyrion's expression after Tywin says "you are my son" at the end. He is NOT thinking "my father respects me now." He is in fact thinking "my father only cares for me now because Jaime is not around" This infuriates him more than ever.
anoriolko 5 months ago
One key aspect that is felt left out here is that in the book it is made clear the only reason Tywin calls Tyrion his son is because he has already given up Jamie for dead.

Who the hell is Tywin Lannister and what is exact role in this show? I have watched this show from day one and still have not figured it.
SkullakaAce 5 months ago
@SkullakaAce He is king Joffreys grandfather and his armies and influence are the key reason why Joffrey can keep his throne
Kyleisfatandweird 5 months ago
@SkullakaAce He is the head of House Lannister, and the Lannisters rule the Westerlands, one of the so-called Seven Kingdoms. He is the father of Jaime, Cersei, and Tyrion, and he is the grandfather of Joffrey. He is the richest man on the continent, thanks to the many gold mines in the Westerlands.
He was also the Hand of the Mad King, Aerys Targaryen, 17 years before the story. When Robert's Rebellion began, he didn't join it until it was clear that Robert would win. (continued...)
Celedam 5 months ago
@Celedam And when he did finally join the rebellion, he did it betraying Aerys and sacking King's Landing. The Seven Kingdoms could have split completely after the Targaryens were removed, but Tywin forced a political marriage between Robert Baratheon, the popular leader of the rebellion, and his own daughter Cersei. That held things together for the 17 years between the rebellion and the current story, but ultimately, Tywin and Cersei want a Lannister dynasty on the throne. Thus, this new war.
Celedam 5 months ago
@Celedam... I don't think he exactly asked for a biography... "Tywin Lannister is Joffrey's grandfather, the lord and military leader of House Lannister" would have sufficed.
Strand0410 5 months ago
@Strand0410 No, it obviously would not, because that's made clear just in this clip, yet the OP was still confused.
Besides, who the hell are you to decide if someone else's question has been answered?
Celedam 5 months ago
@Celedam Because I'm not a sperglord who thinks it's necessary to elaborate where Tywin's Lannister gold comes from, pointlessly speculating what could or could not have happened if Robert had not married Cersei, or thinks replying via two posts due to character limit is within reason.
