Mario Lemieux had what I consider,one of the most underrated performance in sports history:
1993 Mario had the best start of his career and was on his way of breaking Wayne Gretzky's single season record for goals and points but then was diagnosed with hodgkins cancer, left the game for two months to have radiation therapy, only to come back and win the scoring title! By the way these are the top 2 goals per game leaders career ;
@reverseification I remember the newspaper comparing game by game lemieux's 93 start with gretzky's best season of 215...it was going to be close and it would of been great for hockey if he broke it...Before he left he had 104 points in 40 games...he was on pace for 208 points...7 short of gretzky...I don't think people realize how hard it is to reach some of gretzky's numbers
@LawClash If Lemieux hadn't been sick throughout his career and injury ridden, he would've easily passed Gretzky. Mario is definitely the best hockey player of all time in my eyes.
@hockey90 These figures are the result of his latest return. Before his return he was at 2.005 . He played 20-30% of the match and he had difficulty tied his skates because of his back problem
like NOW and KNOW is it logic? I know the difference cause I asked, I learn, i made an effort... thats my point, all languages have their weird things like that
They don't pronounce Swedish, Finnish, Russian or most other foreign names correctly either. Check how Selänne is pronounced. Or Ovechkin (Овечкин). Or Chára. Those are way more off than the pronounciation of Lemieux in this video. I've never heard of a Finn, Russian or Czech complaining about it, though. It just says something about the mindset of French Canadians if you a) can't handle non-perfect pronounciation from foreigners b) assume it's only because the name is French.
I understand but when you know that its a name from another language, at least you make some search. I usually speak french and I try to prononce names of players correctly.
It was the best players of NHL, not a unknown person.
When you have the job to describe an NHL game, you hire someone with skills.
I do think it's pretty hard, since the spelling makes no sense phonetically. Is the X pronounced? No, I know that much. Is the U pronounced? I have no idea. Is the name pronounced like LE-MU?
It's certainly not pronounced LEMIEUX, that's for sure.
@Iamyourboo2 Yeah, I don't know what I am talking about.......saw him at MANY pro-am golf tournaments, up close, and was shocked at his total disregard for fans and refusing pictures and autographs. Not too mention my family builds million dollar homes in Canada and we turned down the contract to build a home for Mario and his parents because they were asses to deal with. Class??? Yeah right.
I call this his 'winnwell' days..the helmut he's wearing...I think he was at his best during his early pre-cancerous days. What a player, class all the way, made everything look easy. I must say that Terreiri and Sauve were small average goalies at best.
Crosby almost beat lemieux's record the game he he almost got 4 goals 5 different ways. Mario got 5 5 different ways. He wasn't even thinking about it, after the game they told him if he'd of gotten one more goal the last way ( think penalty) he'd hold the record and he responded " oh, come on don't tell me that " if he'd of known I'm sure he'd of pushed a little harder to get it.
lol fucking Crosby almost did the same thing this season against the flames. He had a powerplay goal, a shorthanded goal, an empty netter, an even strength goal but he missed on his penalty shot. So close to doing it.
Just a quick question for all you guys out there blowing gretzky. Who was Mario's teamates when he was doing all of these unbelievable things in the '80's? Bet you can't name any of them! And who where 99's teamates? Let's see messier(won a cup without #99), anderson(won cup w/o), kurri (won w/o), coffey (won w/o), Esa (won w/o) Fuhr (won w/o) and the list goes on. In case you wanna be stupid and say Jagr he didn't come to '91. And what did your #99 do after the oilers? Nada, he was a product!
Gretzky didn't have back problems? Are you serious? Search google for 'gretzky herniated disk' and read the article about Gretzky's career-threatening back injury.
199pts... 1 pt shy of 200pts while injured, I don't think he lose sleep over it. Oh and BTW; his season of 160pts in 60 games is a greater achievement then Gretzky 215pts season. Better PPG
Mario Lemieux did a fine job holding Wayne Gretzky's jockstrap. He was always a terrific backup representative of the NHL behind Wayne, when Gretzky was injured, or had to miss a game etc. Obviously, nobody is better than Gretzky, but Mario was always a fine backup!
the goalie's in the present are more in shape and have bigger pads better equipment, and defensemen are much better making it almost impossible to score 5 goals now...look how bad the defensemen are getting deked out ,LOL
Well to be fair, the only goal in this video he deke someone...It was Broten, who is actually a forward. But I get what you mean. The equipment is bigger, more flexible, lighter, better techinque too...Dman tho? There aren't better these days, just play the big trap and boring hockey.
I would actually like having goalie gear reduce like in the late 80's early 90's. Today's equipment is just way too big.

Haha im sry Gretzky fans but this is one of the reason why he was THE GREATEST hockey player of all-time and one of the greatest athletes to ever play sports.
@supersayensonic You need to check your stats man, Lemieux had a much shorter career due to cancer and back injuries. Gretzky played 500 more games. Career statistics for Gretzky 1487 games 894 goals 1963 assists 2857 points 1.92 points per game Career statistics for Lemieux 915 games 690 goals 1033 assists 1723 points 1.88 points per game
Gretzky never had back problems? Are you serious? Search google for 'gretzky herniated disk' and read the article about Gretzky's career-threatening back injury.
Ok, the Lemieux VS Gretzky debate again? WTF is wrong with you people who take part in this silliest of arguments...?? NOBODY in this world has the answer to the "who was better between Orr, Gretzky and Lemieux" question. Why? 'Cause there is no answer to this. You can argue plenty of valid points to say who was better than the other, but really, in the end, it's just YOUR OPINION. That's all it is. It's your preference. To Don Cherry, the greatest is always gonna be #4, and that's his opinion.
if wane was so great why didn't he win anymore stanley cups after leaving the talent rich oiler team???????a lot of his success was tied to that team without it he did pretty much squat!!!!kings=nothing,st.louis=nothing and the rangers was just a joke!!!
That's not true, Wayne already won a MVP before Kurri even got in the league, and Wayne won another MVP when he was traded to a team that finished 18th out of 21 teams the year before, and without Kurri or Messier.
And why do you say Gretzky was a joke with the Rangers, I don't see a lot of players with back-to-back 90 pts seasons at the end of the 90s.
Gretzky didn't deserve MVP in the 1988-1989 season; Mario clearly dominated the league that year with 199 points and with Rob Brown as his winger. Mario accounted for(via assists or goals) about half the Penguin's offensive performance that season.
This is FAR from being the greatest achievement in sports, if you think about it. Three of the five goals are easy, this is a meaningless season game against a bad team with bad second and third goalies. It's a five-goals game like many others, but with a funny coincidence, it's not even a NHL record.
But 8 straight MVPs, now that's an achievement, but it's not Mario who did it...
@Irato99 maybe not, but its pretty damn good. i'd like to see you score the any of these goals if they're so easy.. hell, id even like to see if gretzky could have scored any of these goals
@yinzersunite well i agree, but lemieux got so lucky. i mean how many times does a player get the oppurtunity to score a goal in 5 different ways in 1 game. that being said, it was still amazing
@TheMJtheGOD hahahaha that wouldn't hurt. i think Ovechkin needs to learn how to be a teammate. they have certainly had amazing talent on the team the past couple of years. definitely enough to win a Cup. but anyway i'm not a big fan of him so i'm biased haha.
You must not know too much about Mario to say something like that. Marrios point average per game was higher than Gretzky's. Mario was never even healthy during his career - back problems, leukemia, cancer. Before he left the first time, he had the highest point average, and when he returned older and with back problems, the average dropped slightly below WG's. If Mario was fully healthy for his whole career and played as long as Gretzky I have no doubt he would have stole a lot of those records
His records just mean he had more time to get all the points or whatever. Most of his records just require time. Mario didn't fail. He was a better player when he was on the ice. Just because he didn't play as long doesn't make him worse. It just means he didn't play as long....
If Mario was better, why didn't he break the record of 50 goals in 39 games set by Gretzky? He only needed 39 games... Or having a 51 consecutive games point streak (scoring 153 pts in the process) like Gretzky, Mario had plenty of time to do this.
I never said he would break EVERY record idiot...And it could have been attributed to his lack of a decent team like Gretzky or leukemia. He was never completely healthy as I said
I saw Mario play in Laval years before you were born, you're embarrassing yourself more than you think. Just admit the facts, Mario was good but Gretzky was better.
@Irato99 is it just me, or did goalies look like flopping fish back in the early 80's? with like no pads at all... it took much less skill to score a goal. it kind of makes me laugh when i watch old hockey films, cuz all they had to do was take a slap shot and 80% of the time, its gonna go in the net
been trying to find this game forever thanks for the upload he was the greatest without a doubt

To Don Cherry, the greatest is always gonna be #4, and that's his opinion.

if wane was so great why didn't he win anymore stanley cups after leaving the talent rich oiler team???????a lot of his success was tied to that team without it he did pretty much squat!!!!kings=nothing,st.louis=nothing and the rangers was just a joke!!!
goog1967 1 year ago
@goog1967
Then, if Mario was so great, why didn't he win the Cup every year he played? You don't seem to understand the concept of team in hockey.
Irato99 1 year ago
@Irato99 wayne didn't either nor did gordie howe!!! just saying without kuri ,mess and others wayne was not as good.
goog1967 1 year ago
@goog1967
Irato99 1 year ago
@Irato99
Gretzky didn't deserve MVP in the 1988-1989 season; Mario clearly dominated the league that year with 199 points and with Rob Brown as his winger. Mario accounted for(via assists or goals) about half the Penguin's offensive performance that season.

The night where he scored five goals in five different ways.
Not just the best player ever, but also MY favorite athlete of all time. PERIOD.
Thank you for what you've done for Pittsburgh, Mario.

this 5 goals/5 different ways is THE greatest achievment in all of sports - ever - if you tihnk about it.
it will never be matched.
yinzersunite 1 year ago 28
@yinzersunite
Irato99 1 year ago
@Irato99 maybe not, but its pretty damn good. i'd like to see you score the any of these goals if they're so easy.. hell, id even like to see if gretzky could have scored any of these goals
slaphappy18 1 year ago
@yinzersunite well i agree, but lemieux got so lucky. i mean how many times does a player get the oppurtunity to score a goal in 5 different ways in 1 game. that being said, it was still amazing
Slipknot5301 1 year ago
@yinzersunite But you do have to admit you need a lot of luck to achieve this. But you are correct, this is the most impossible feat in sports.
Zachary1981 1 year ago
@yinzersunite
Crosby came close to it last week.

SmashBrosFan19 1 year ago
@SmashBrosFan19
Gretzky's ppg avg IS higher than Mario's. I know, Mario left, came back, and it dropped, it would've been even lower if he played as long as Gretzky.
Mario was not healthy, he didn't play as long, so sad, kudos to Gretzky for being able to play longer.
Irato99 1 year ago
Just because he could play longer and set the records doesn't make him better.
SmashBrosFan19 1 year ago
@SmashBrosFan19
Obviously it does make him better, that's the point, it's quite tougher to actually breaks records than to be expected to do it and fail.
Irato99 1 year ago
His records just mean he had more time to get all the points or whatever. Most of his records just require time. Mario didn't fail. He was a better player when he was on the ice. Just because he didn't play as long doesn't make him worse. It just means he didn't play as long....
SmashBrosFan19 1 year ago
@SmashBrosFan19
If Mario was better, why didn't he break the record of 50 goals in 39 games set by Gretzky? He only needed 39 games... Or having a 51 consecutive games point streak (scoring 153 pts in the process) like Gretzky, Mario had plenty of time to do this.
Irato99 1 year ago
I never said he would break EVERY record idiot...And it could have been attributed to his lack of a decent team like Gretzky or leukemia. He was never completely healthy as I said
SmashBrosFan19 1 year ago
@SmashBrosFan19
It could be attributed to the fact that Gretzky was a better player, Mario had a lot of decent teams full of HoFers.
Irato99 1 year ago
Dude, you obviously know nothing about Mario. Please, just stop from embarrassing yourself...
SmashBrosFan19 1 year ago
@SmashBrosFan19
I saw Mario play in Laval years before you were born, you're embarrassing yourself more than you think. Just admit the facts, Mario was good but Gretzky was better.
Irato99 1 year ago
No. He wasn't. You seem to just be going with the popular opinion. Don't be so naive..
SmashBrosFan19 1 year ago
@Irato99 is it just me, or did goalies look like flopping fish back in the early 80's? with like no pads at all... it took much less skill to score a goal. it kind of makes me laugh when i watch old hockey films, cuz all they had to do was take a slap shot and 80% of the time, its gonna go in the net
