im from guam, and we get frequent typhoons (hurricans in the pacifics are called such). all of guams structures are solid concrete, yet americans homes are usually built from wood because the chances of such disasters are slim. to us would be just a big storm but to them is the end of the world.

I lost any repect I could have had for Baton Rouge police and Louisiana State police as well as some emergency responder all who simply passed by us without offering any assistance when we slept in a gas station parking lot in the rain. No I'm not exaggerating. Horrible traffic unless like us you took the back roads.
Power outages were terrible for this storm. We evacuated Houma for Natchez Miss last Sat, just got back Friday and power just came back on tonight (Sat.) Couldn't get gas at any price for the longest time in either Miss or Louisiana because electricity was out. It was miserable, no rooms avail

I was an evacuee of gustav and my family travles to Shreveport to a shelter and fema kept telling us they were going to find a place to sleep.We waited so long we just left.Then we went to Monroe's shelter they took in 1500 people and expected the rest to wait outside until 9pm and there was still no garente we would get a bed.We wound up in Arlington Texas people rented us a few hotelrooms.If it was not for them we would not have had a place to sleep.

How much more notice can anyone need? They only left this time because Katrina was bad. Some just wanted the free ride out of town. Mother nature is everywhere. If an area is not affected by hurricanes; there are always tornadoes, earthquakes, volcanoes, forest fires, avalanches or other forces of nature to be worried about. The advantage with hurricanes is that nowadays they are very easy to track, so there's usually ample warning. Also you can build buildings to withstand hurricanes relatively cheap.
We all need to be careful. I recorded a video of how this HC affected the florida coast with flooding, when it was 800 miles away... The impact was uncanny for that distance. God Bless everyone in it's path.

I lost any repect I could have had for Baton Rouge police and Louisiana State police as well as some emergency responder all who simply passed by us without offering any assistance when we slept in a gas station parking lot in the rain. No I'm not exaggerating. Horrible traffic unless like us you took the back roads.

If ike comes my way and forces evacuation, I'm going back home to indiana. :) At least I have that option, I feel blessed. I was an evacuee of gustav and my family travles to Shreveport to a shelter and fema kept telling us they were going to find a place to sleep.We waited so long we just left.Then we went to Monroe's shelter they took in 1500 people and expected the rest to wait outside until 9pm and there was still no garente we would get a bed.We wound up in Arlington Texas people rented us a few hotelrooms.If it was not for them we would not have had a place to sleep.

All I can say is that at least everyone was better prepared this time, FEMA, the local and state governments, people evacuating on time and not being stuck in the Superdome. Still, we dodged a bullet on this one and thankfully one a couple of days it will leave and only thing to worry about is flooding in other areas in the state of Louisiana or Texas.

I have an idea. We send them all a suitcase so they can move from the big ass bowl that lies below sea level right next to the ocean! It is a crime to continually pay to relocate people because they CHOOSE to live in New Orlens. I am all for helping people who live on higher ground. Why do you think it is next to impossible to get flood insurance there? Because it is a bad risk. It has happened and will continue to happen. They should move permanently or be left on their own.

He sent aid last time. When it was requested. Lets not forget that Louisiana had an incompetent governor and she was asleep on the job. EVERYONE knew it was coming and she and her chocolate mayor did almost NOTHING then blamed the federal government when it got ugly. Now they have a governor with his head in the game and he got together with other states and made a game plan. It is easy to blame the federal government. We dont need the fed govt most of the time if our states do their jobs.

People knew about Katrina too but did nothing but waited to loot after the place was wrecked. Read what I wrote above this. I WAS IN A TENT IN IRAQ and knew it was on the way. How much more notice can anyone need? They only left this time because Katrina was bad. Some just wanted the free ride out of town. I bet next time many more stay because it hasn't been a catastophy (yet). It is a waste to keep evacuating and rebuilding a city in a bowl next to the ocean where hurricanes hit all the time.

Mother nature is everywhere. If an area is not affected by hurricanes; there are always tornadoes, earthquakes, volcanoes, forest fires, avalanches or other forces of nature to be worried about. The advantage with hurricanes is that nowadays they are very easy to track, so there's usually ample warning. Also you can build buildings to withstand hurricanes relatively cheap.

PEOPLE the water is gonna be this high in new orlans its gonna be sume flooding If ur from that N.O like me all m life everytime it storm it floods in louisianna. But im praying them damn levels dont break. all te news channle AND BREAKING NEWS JUST HEARD THAT the Walls are LEAAKING> AHH NOW IM NERVOUS just every pray nothing happens. cause if it does thats another year with the new orleans folks.lol but yo for real please keep new orleans in our prayers

this is ridiculous never live in a city below sea level thats a hint. OOO it might flood maybe cuz New Orleans is below sealevel and wasting millions of dollars.

I am proud to see our Federal Government in support of our citizens in Louisiana. This time the Federal government did not get mixed up in local politics like the last time. The governor of Louisiana and mayor Nagen are responsible for not getting them out.
The bus drivers fled and left the buses and refused to drive during katrina. Many citizens were stranded and left unprotected.
Today, the Federal government and Governor Jindahl have successfully orchestrated the emergency plan.
