i can safely say that out of all the 2000s movies, this one seems to be in the "god-tier" department, while most of the others are in "shit-tier" department
I watched this movie for the first time a year ago and thought it was good. I watched it again a year later and thought it was nothing short of a masterpiece. There Will be Blood is one of those movies that the more you watch, the better the it gets.
I'm not denying that Daniel Day Lewis is a great actor, but he tends to (in my own opinion) overact; however, he's stunning as Daniel Plainview in There Will be Blood.

IF YOU APPRECIATE REAL AND WELL MADE INDEPENDENT CINEMA, THEN PLEASE CHECK OUT MY CHANNEL, ALL MY SHORT FILMS ARE THERE. IS NOT MY INTENTION TO SPAM, I´M JUST ASKIN YOUR HELP.
@Cryptically After watching it for the 3rd time I believe it's because the boy figured out that there was something sketchy about the brother..good intuition and understanding of him. Notice the flame headed right for the brother.
There were three western masterpieces of 2007; There Will Be Blood, No Country For Old Men and The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford.
2007 was full of great films. It may have been on the best years for film in decades (aside from 1998).
Seriously, there was There Will be BLood, No Country for Old Men, Assassination of Jesse James, Gone Baby Gone, American Gangster, Into the Wild, Sweeney Todd, Zodiac, Juno, Atonement, Lives of Others, Hot Fuzz, Michael Clayton, Ratatouille, Bourne Ultimatum, and so many more. The Academy had a field day for that year.
@MrTimeControl I wouldn't say that "The Assassination of Jesse James" was a masterpiece, but it was certainly was a damn good movie. Let's not forget "Juno" though. Not in the same league as "Blood" and "Old Men" but still damn near perfect!
"I have competition in me.. I want no one else to succeed!" Daaamn I've felt like that so many times.. Just get PT Anderson an Oscar for best screenplay already.. shit..
anyone know the name of the scene were Eli gets slapped and Daniel throws him on the ground and covers him in mud? That he will bury him to the ground?
I don't know why I thought this was gonna be about some crazy serial killer or pychopath that murders his competiton, but I still thought it was a really good movie.
Did anyone else notice the tear that fell from Daniel's eye when he sent H.W. away on the train? I didn't catch this until I saw the movie on Blu-ray.
This is probably my favorite trailer ending of all time. One of the reasons of this, is that it affects me physically every time - When Lewis delivers the infamous "I can't keep doing this on my own... With these, um... *smirks* ...people..." line, I always, ALWAYS smirk, too :D...
I could watch it 10 times in a row, I still do it every time! And the whole sentence adds this cool "F*ck everybody!" feeling to it...
I'd like to hope I'm not the only one who thinks this :D...
@mjmanning123 I love this and No Country (this a lot more). But I understand what you mean. He probably rooted for Anton in that movie and cheered when people got murdered.
@pyramidheadkitten9 I have a friend who hated this movie, but at least he was able to give me a valid reason for disliking it. He didn't just say that it sucked.
I love how this movie like Chinatown (1974), has very very subtitle underlinings of masterful horror yet are dramas. Especially in their trailers. Love the trailer also.
Lewis should have won the Academy Award for Gangs of New York as well. His performance there was just as deserving. I think it is an absolute fraud that Adrian Brody won for the Pianist. What a disgrace.
There was just a handful of individuals watching it when I went to go see it on a snowy February evening. Few who saw it in theaters will soon forget the sheer emotional weight that occurred while viewing this modern classic. To a father's agony to the hope for redemption only for it to be blown away due to a slight of judgement. It was black and white with the vibrance of rolling plains, it was the loudest silent film ever conceived, it refuses to be forgotten, it never will be.
DDL evoked every kind of emotion in me throughout this film.. but above all I felt a genuine sense of fear - this guy conveys the madness of the man with such a chilling and serious depth.. I felt utterly compelled to watch see what he did next!
No, Daniel Plainview is one of the independent oil producers, who tries to survive in an era in which Rockefeller and Standard Oil pretty much owned everything when it came to the oil business. Spoiler ahead: In the movie Plainview needs to build a pipeline to the coast so that he can transport his oil without the need to transport it by rail. You see since Rockefeller owned the railroad he could charge any price for transport so whatever somebody made from oil was eaten up...
Well, considering it wasn't a huge commercial success anywhere, those who read the great reviews went to see it. I think those in Russia that knew about this movie wanted to see it regardless if the title of the movie had been slighltly changed.
Besides including the word blood means a lot of ignorant people think they are going to see some horror movie (Daniel Plainview is more scary than any stupid horror movie character, because people like him do exist in the businessworld)
It's funny, but the trailer looks like true horror for me - music, quoted lines, emotions on screen, everything just screams about good horror movie :)
Great movie, great cinematography, and great performance by Daniel Day-Lewis. I also really love the soundtrack, but for some reason it always reminds me of The Shining.
