Thanks for this. Most especially the pics you included w/it...showing the old days w/the new & the back to back w/how different he looks...then & now. ;)
Most poignant, is at 1:30. Bruce would now stand alone in that shot. :(
These lyrics sound rather passé coming from a woman, but are strangely interesting coming from man. The idea of the man needing protection subtly changes the meaning of the words, and having the woman standing out in the darkness makes for a more interesting picture than the reverse.
estreetpeppers, thanks for this great song. I have every Bruce album and DVD that exists and I don't have this song. Bruce is simply THE BOSS. Thanks again from Toronto, Canada!!!!!!
This is good...Saw him 5 times and I think this would be aweomse LIVE... espc. in Phiadelphia (the best place for Bruce concerts). Hope he does one more tour!!!!
Allegedly, Bruce wrote Cover Me for Donna Summer, but Jon Landau thought it was too good to give away. So he wrote this, to be sung as a duet, and they recorded it as such, but the label didn't like the way it was working out, and made it a solo. You can hear the E Street band, and bruce, on her track, particularly at the end.
We probably never know....But I have some rare and unreleased songs not yet posted on you-tube that I picked up from an underground collector in New York.
I know if I ever posted them not only would I get booted off you-tube but arrested as well. There are about 22 unreleased songs no one has heard B4 other than Bruce and who ever else was in the studio! But the songs span from 1974 to1982Along with a bunch of videos also unreleased with unseen footage in the studio and concerts I Paid $2000 4m
always wanted to hear his version, I've known Donna Summer's version since 1982, wish it could have been released as the original duet, it would have solified Donna's career as a rocker. Thanks for posting!
if your offering to post this song please do...i cannot find this song anywhere id be willing to pay for it from itunes or anywhere and cannot find it so if you have it yes please post!
Bruce says in his 1998 book SONGS: " 'Cover Me' I'd originally written for Donna Summer. She could really sing and I disliked the veiled racism of the anti-disco movement. When I cut the demo, it came out so good that I held on to it. I later wrote another song, "Protection", and recorded it with Donna and Quincy Jones in L.A."
Liner notes from the One Step Up / Two Steps Back: The Songs Of Bruce Springsteen tribute booklet:
Bruce wrote the song for me, and in fact, came to my house in Los Angeles for several days to get it done. I love the song as well as being a big Bruce Springsteen fan. It was the icing on the cake and a big moment in my life. Hey Bruce, let's do it again.
OMG, its painful to listen to him try to sing well out of his range. Yes, Springsteen wrote this for Donna Summer, but originally he had written Cover Me for Donna. They recorded this song together, but it wasn't working as a duet, so she did it alone, but Bruce played guitar and you can hear him "singing" at the very end of her song.
It's surprising that he (and the E Street Band) recorded it after Donna's version. Maybe Bruce should have worked with Donna (and Quincy) or Donna should have recorded with the E Street Band. Could have been great.
Great ROCK Song From the BOSS to The almost "Queen of ROCK" Donna Summer !!! After Dance/Disco music went underground in 1980, Donna Summer went back to her 60's Rock roots and launched a hopeful but short lived Rock & Roll career. The results were another 2 Grammy nominations for "Best Rock song" in 1981 & 1983. The media poised her as the black Pat Benatar. Donna's roots were in a Rock band and Rock Musicals. After 3 short years in Rock, her record company decided to redirect her into R&B.
Man, what a blast from the past. I knew Springsteen wrote it, but I thought is was for Donna Summer. Thanks for allowing us to hear the original version. Donna's version is similar, but I think hers is better and did deserve the Grammy nomination it recieved back in the day for best female rock performance. Plus, Bruce played on hers, which also mad it special.
This song reminds me of several Bruce songs. It sounds like what it is..a throwaway. Nice tune and I like it (had never heard it before) but if it's true it was recorded at the Born in the USA session I'm happy they left it out. It sounds a LOT like "Roulette" if anyone knows that one?
So this is gonna be on TRACKS II right???

This is the REAL story, told by Donna Summer:

I'm pretty sure E street band supported the music on Donna Summers version.
It reminds alot of Roulette which is also a rarity, though he played it for us in Sweden 5/7 -08.

I've always liked this version of Protection. Very fast paced and full of energy, very similar to Cover Me.
Bruce has enough quality tracks sitting in "the vault" to make 2 more Tracks sets. Let's hope he does.

This is a sweet video too. Where did you get it? I've NEVER seen (heard) it before.

Donna Summer and Bruce should do a duet of this. Bruce has that rockin' loud emotion, but Donna can support him on the higher stuff. That'd be sweet.
