so apparently what that guy does is use lights to annoy people. isn't that clever. does this guy think he's adding anything to this experience? i'm not even interested enough to google "wayne coyne".
Listen, @livegems & supporters - it's always dangerous to know just a little more than other folks. It makes you feel like you know more than you actually do.. OK, so you've heard of Nick Drake and Serge Gainsbourg. Those are two very fine steps in the direction of becoming a genuine, bona fide music geek. But you still have about another 100,000 steps to go. As you become more knowledgeable, you'll discover that everything sounds like something else - sharing a mood isn't plagiarism.
i just listened to river man by nike drake, and i wanted to disagree and come back here and mouth off at you, but you're absolutely right, it's basically the same song musically, but i will say that lyrically it goes in a very different direction... sea change(one of the greatest albums ever) was written in a week after beck had a bad breakup so the commen theme of the album is the end of a relationship... inspite of the fact that it is like riverman, it's still incredible in its own right.
The song is a direct COPY of Nick Drake's Riverman just like Paper Tiger is an even more exact copy of Melody Nelson by Serge Gainsbourg (except Serge's is better as Herbie Flowers is on it--bass on Lou Reed's "Walk On The Wildside"). C'mon Beck, what's up?
I disagree completely, it's even a stretch to say Paper Tiger was inspired by that song. While both songs are completely different than the ones you compared them to, Nick Drake's River Man uses some of the same chordes as Round The Bend, and roughly has the same mood, so it could've drawn inspiration from it, but it's hardly a 'copy.' Take you bullshit somewhere else, troll.
@livegems Your comment is...well, stupid...Beck is probably one of the most orignal musicians of the last 20 years..So he likes Gaiinsbourg..Is there suddenly some rule that only the original artist can paly a song? lol!
@zeromousX i'm completely on board with this, i plan to do it too, i also plan on swinging a big red light slowly cause it's lovely and relaxing... somwhere between here and then though i gotta finds me a female.
I love this album. I honestly wasn't even a fan of his music until I heard Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime, and then an ex introduced me to Sea Change. wow, that's about all I can say.
never heard the lips this understated.
Brilliant fit, even though I do wish wayne would sit down.

i prefer the original by Serge Gainsbourg, which is a masterpiece. People need to create new music.

Would I be a bad father if I played this for my future children as a song to sleep to. It is beautifully sad, but I love that.

its a bad recording

@Cnew11
I like it. With that background noise, the song seems to be taken from a vinyl album
PuffetePuffete 1 year ago
@Cnew11 - drummer is playing on his knee with sticks - the mics are picking it up... Bonham did it in "Ramble On"
