Is it normal that there's no picture on the disc channel?

Also, thanks for the warning, my Wii has the 3.2E firmware and I'm not going to update it.

It depends on the game. Some will have the picture on the disc channel, this game doesn't have the picture. And Keep the 3.2 firmware do not update to 3.3, it will kill the freeloader!
