People should understand that FDR saw what massive deflation and right wing economics did to Germany - it brought Hitler to power. The misrule of Henrich Bruening put Hitler in power and FDR concluded that such could happen in the future. If people are robbed of their livelihoods they will consider looking to a fascist messiah for relief.
@lordhighexecutioner hahahahaha it was massive INFLATION you stupid shit. Ever heard of hyperinflation in the Weimar? The Treaty of Versailles which Wilson played a large part in contributed led to the hyperinflation. It had nothing to do with right wing economics you economic illiterate.
If people have the right to "life" then surely they have the right to the essentials of life such as food, shelter and medical care. Social Darwinists certainly do not believe in the right to life.
You act as if there is a preconceived amount of poverty and that the welfare system isn't contributing to that. By the way, what is "right wing economics"? Surely, you can't be talking about the Progressive Herbert Hoover who, when the stock market crashed, raised taxes, passed the Smoot-Hawley Tariffs into law, sided with unions to keep businesses from laying off workers? This compared to the last depression, which was 10 years earlier, which nobody seems to remember.
This should be the mantra of all liberals. May we never forget the dream of FDR and let us work to maintain and establish these rights. May our congressmen implement all the rights found in this great excerpt of one of the Greatest American Presidents.
Progressive was nearly completely stopped with Reagan, and then Bush Sr.. As much as I appreciate Clinton he was nothing close to FDR. He did manage to balance our budget so that's nice. Bush the younger actively worked against progress. He dismantled many of our rights. Rights we were already guaranteed by the first Bill of Rights. At least Obama is moving in the right direction with Health Care Reform. Granted I think the version that's been passed is weak tea, but it's better than nothing.
@Lesthios I very much agree, also it should become law that we refur to Bush JR. as Bush the Younger. Let us put it in the TextBooks!!!!!!!! I live in texas, I can see it done!
There's a whole lot of right-wing, fascist douchebagery going on in here. FDR was a visionary. With the passage of Healthcare Reform this week we will have finally begun to right the massive wrongs perpetrated upon the American people by its own government. We will drag your dumb asses along with us and in time you will take your new rights for granted. People such as yourselves always do. Before you start your redneck chest puffing, don't bother. You're not coming here to beat me up. Blowhard.
before you call fdr a marxist or whatever glenn beck told you to remember him by, you must know that during those years, senior citizens and those unable to fend for themselves literaly died in the streets, his policies were a compassionate response to this.
A "2nd Bill Of Rights", huh? Guess the 1st wasn't good enough. He had to include the socialist notion that everyone was entitled (key word) to these things without mentioning once their own responsibility to work for them. I laugh at today's fashion to mock those of us who tout personal responsibility as a condition of liberty. While I agree that economic liberty is a cornerstone of true liberty, I believe it is one's responsibility to achieve it through their own labor.
Roosevelt was trying to tell you that no matter your position in life you can be a productive person as he was.Roosevelt was in a wheel chair and became president of the U.S.A. Many have disability or are handicaped. His speaches have nothing to do with socialism or communism, if you haters could open your minds you would see how far ahead of his time FDR really was.
I want to invent a time machine and go back in time and ring this fascists neck....he's the reason why we have the 22nd Amendment...Stalin Hitler and FDR all were dictators..Churchill should have bitch slapped this socialist. I hope to inspire all true freedom loving people to run over a communist/socialist (samething) with their gas guzzling automobile on St. Patricks Day this year...I know I am going to!
@worseto your an idiot...i have never run to the government for help..thats what losers like you do ...remember mommy telling you life isn't fair? Obviously you don't that is why liberal losers like yourself think someone owes you something...go get it for yourself. Liberals and Government are the problem never the solution...wise up asshole..before it costs you everything you and I have.....typical
silly boy. you obviously have no idea what the situation truely is, do you? I keep reading your ill-concieved posts and I'm reminded of the need to also reform our educational system.
To all of those who wish to educate the supporters of FDR's "dream" about the reality of rights, do not waste your time. A wall will not budge no matter how many times you bang your head against it.
Rest assured, the day is coming where reality itself will teach them the hard way. Let them face it with no excuses, no claims of "I didn't know!" Only then will they learn the truth.
I wonder why if in the 1940s our leaders could see that this is the right direction to head why it has waned so much today. These Rights seem like a no-brainer but they have been sacrificed or diminished at the expense of the worker. As long as Greed and shareholders rights hold more value with our leaders and corporations than the well being of the people who work for these companies this will be the largest obstacle for the working people of America.
Actually, only a no-brainer considers the second bill of rights actual rights.
A right cannot put an unwanted burden on others. All of those things named in the second bill of rights are man-made goods and services, so how can anyone logically have a right to them without it being slave labor?
It's good to hear someone talking sense on this subject. It is exactly what we are up against today. Nobody else, has the right to take from sonrouge, or me, or you, what has been legally gained by our work, to give to someone who has less. That is one of the reasons why we have worked to create a prosperous business, so we can choose and have the ability to take care of US and OUR FAMILIES first, THEN be charitable to the causes we believe in.
you may not like it, but that doesn't mean it's not allowed to happen or that it is in any way unconstitutional. Social reform is coming so get ready. You right wingers have bunkers for stuff like this don't you? Stuffed with like Campbells soup and ramen noodles? Yeah, that's where you need to go, man. This is the end of Days!
Why is that? Do you have a rule book that none of us know about? No, you don't, this is just your opinion. You know what your opinion is worth, right? One vote. If you even get off your lazy ass to do that.
FDR had a misunderstanding of what rights are. You don't have a right to someone else's services. We have the right to buy a gun, but we don't have the right to be given a gun. We have the right to buy healthcare, but we don't have the right to be given healthcare. If you believe that someone else's services are 'rights', then you believe in at least partial slavery. You can't enact this second bill of rights without destroying the first bill of rights.
Now notice how, for daring to speak the truth about rights, you are being given the thumbs down. Statists hate it when people aren't fooled by their idiotic rhetoric.
Yeah, I posted that response to a couple of different videos about FDR's bill of rights, and never once did I receive an intelligent rebuttal to my statement. I just get thumbs-downed into oblivion, which is pretty much an admission of defeat in my mind.
I guess there's no use trying to reason with the delusional. All we can hope to do is help the free-thinking see the light of day.
Statists are all about generating anger and hate at someone. Logic is never a factor.
One thing I've always noticed about the "Tax the rich and give it to the poor" crowd is how they never have provided a logical reason for it. They've only said "Why should the rich have more than you?" as though it should be an automatic assumption that being rich is somehow wrong.
I believe that this is another standard "bumper sticker" generalization of what FDR was trying to say. For someone so weary from a debate they couldnt find and didnt want; you seem a little too comfortable stereotyping your would be intellectual adversaries in cliche, eight and nine word, soundbites. I respect your opinion enough to hope that you cannot truly believe that everyone who doesnt share your views on this issue is as unwilling to debate with equal logic and validity as you have been.
You're lame ass will be pulling statistics from everywhere tomorrow morning when you wake up and the Healthcare bill has been passed. You'll be crying 35% this annd 22% that, but none of it will undo the inevitable.
it's so silly that you would assert your opinion is the truth...being the anriest in no way makes you the smartest. This, I'm afraid, is just another onw of those times where your fear has overpowered your ability to think rationally. It probably happens a lot in your life. I feel sorry for the people who have to be around you.
You have a very narrow and misguided understanding of what a right is, who grants them, and how we get them. Luckily for you, those of us who understand those concepts already are looking out for you. And boy do you need it.
No he's right, these things are why America is starting to tumble behind the rest of the first world. We're nearly losing a spot in gdp per capita every year. If things continue as they have over the last decade, the US will be at the bottom of the first world in 20 years.
@override367 My stepfather went back to England after living in the States for 30+ years and he now has full health care, housing, and a food pension.
If you think about it, America was (in many aspects) very progressive back in the first half of the 20th century, and slowly regressed over time, especially after Reagan was elected. Europe on the other hand was quite conservative, but gradually became more progressive over time. I don't necessarily blame one person or group for the "every man for himself" attitude we have now, but rather an ideology of greed and exploitation, wrapped in the flag and carried on a cross. Thanks Reaganomics!
Conservatives in Europe basically are members of the Democratic party in the US. I'm a conservative, yet I wouldn't be able to in any way vote for a Republican! Conservatives in the US are extremists.
@MrRoboto81 Yeah actually it was called the Progressive Era. That's when we got labor rights, women got to vote, monopolies were broken up, civil rights were affirmed, the FDA was created to stop people from eating rancid meat and/or human remains which were often grounded up with beef and fed to the ignorant masses. FDR began the Liberal Consensus which lasted to 1970's. The Liberal Era brought civil rights to Blacks, Hispanics, Gays, and Women. The Liberal Era ended with the rise of Reagan
***Any institution that is not classically liberal overtime becomes collectivist and statist. ***
Please expand...I think we take a differening approach to this, but don't think we're on different pages...
I do believe as a society we have to have rights, rights like FDR is expressing. You must as well believe in rights...rights not handed down by a god but rights that we fight for and agree too.
I can't take credit for that quote, but it sums up exactly what happens as we move closer to FDR's vision. I base my belief off the facts of the last two centuries that consistantly prove that quote to be true. You've been to my page so check out the first three vids about serfdom, groups, and the American government. Then watch the Andrew Napolitano vid. He is one of the only honest pundits around. Too bad he is on Fox news. He does not resemble their ilk.
I agree with FDR on this one, cause doesnt the whole concept of Free Enterprise have nore CONS than pros in morern are america? It;s created such a gap between the upper and lower class that the middle class is dissapearing?
(correct me if I'm wrong, you guys seem to have alot more knowledge than me about all this stuff)
JessicaBelle81....I agree with the small to mid-sized business model of free market capitalism vs socialism....but that doesn't even resemble what we have right now in the US with gigantic bloated publicly traded companies crushing small and mid sized businesses. This "someone" you mention selling a good or service only exists as a miniscule part of the whole economy. I agree they should be protected but no one needs to protect giant corps...they've already bought Congress and the Senate
We are on the edge of a Social Revolution. The middle class is all but gone, it's only a matter of time and the right person to lead it. Capitalism has failed and no amount of taxpayer money used as bailout will change anything.
The people must be educated about the Constitution and participate in politics. We cannot trust the decisions to be made by either one of the parties, we need representation, we need a voice of the people.
@PashedMotatoes You are 100% right. Any one who cant see the failure of capitalism and its inherent ability to lead to unethical behavior via corporations, is a bafoon still brainwashed by the BS "american dream" that was only ever realistic for peoplw whowere geniuses or were born with money. I hope we have a Socialist revolution and that those moron anti-poor, anti-middle class Tea party idiots are stopped.
Actually Constitutionally Speaking FDR's Bill of Rights is some what against the constitution,
he chooses his words very carefully. You need to revise the constitution so that in future after the " Revolution " it doesn't happen again like it has . Politicians wait for what would have been outraged to take down FDR's Laws and Bills past after he died to the next generation or 2 which are clueless and have no idea, such as de-regulation, laws to keep big business in check.
These same sentiments were echoed in the Beveridge report in the UK. They were common sentiments around the West post-WW2, and it is unfortunate that the US failed to move in the direction of our Democratic allies. There are many problems which can arise from what re socialist policies, but the outcome of not implementing them is worse. We in the US are in fact quite socialist, and without that socialism we'd be a weaker nation as in the post-civil war era.
I don't think we can complain that it's unjust to force someone to supply such basic economic rights to people. If people don't have these, isn't it likely because they were cheated out of them by corporate interests? I know some of the homeless and poor are in their position due to their own fault or mental instability, but I highly doubt that is the majority.
Economic rights is respecting property rights. You think someone is evil because he provides a good or service that the general public wants and is willing to exchange their money for?
No, I think someone is evil when he manipulates the system to deprive the general public of their money in the first place. Redistribution of wealth results in the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people.
It depends. If they have enough food, and people are starving, yes, they're evil. IF you have plenty and deny to others who have none, yes, you are evil.
What is evil except for extreme selfishness. a country where 2% of the population owns 98% of the wealth?
You think it's evil when people who have nothing come and steal from those who have too much...You think it's evil that a man should watch his family starve to death while fruit rots on trees?
FDR was also the best president in the history of our country. This is almost universally agreed by scholars, historians, political sciences, and the intelligentsia in general.
Your comments about communism are true, but you slander a great president and another who is yet to prove himself as anything.
This is agreed upon unanimosly by kensian scollars who favor interventionalism and central planning.
The libertarian argument is that not only are these endevors unseistanable, inefective, but also emoral as they deny property rights a man has on his labor.
Actually FDR is one of those Presidents that tried to stack the deck in his favor. That's not honorable nor "great" IMO. Everyone of his "2nd BOR's" requires someone else to give up to another by force or coercion. That's not a right. What's the old saying? "One of the greatest delusions is the hope that evil will be cured by legislation". It doesn't happen.
So, the rights of the privileged usurp the rights of the many? The rights of the few over the rights of the needy? We should live in a world where 2% of the people control 98% of the wealth...And this is good WHY?
No one gets ahead, the decks are stacked, we live in an age of corporate robbers barons, you listen to lies on your radio and TV, lies that if you bow to your corporate masters and buy what they sell you you too will get ahead in this world.
You cannot have rights of the many without the individual. And who gives that 2% power? You wish to trade one corporation for another. What a wonderful idea our government had to give corps "rights". So let's see, your wish for a corporate government supporting corporate business and they do this by using corporate media? Please sell the garbage of government benevolence to the other 98% who buy it. Any institution that is not classically liberal overtime becomes collectivist and statist.
Conservatives are always against change, and always have been. The good news is that they have always, ultimately, lost. They are fighting a losing battle in all instances, as human nature is passing them by, on the wings of education.
Don't fault them...They went to government schools and they've been burdened by government propaganda all their lives. It's difficult to break people from the cycle of dependancy for endless war as health of the state and endless government goodies for all.
Government goodies...the basic right to be able to live a life free of corporate exploitation?
You have no trouble being exploited and abused by the monied collectives we call the corporation, but you don't want the dirty little unwashed to have any rights or privildges?
Make Children work? No vacation or comp time? No workers rights? These are government 'goodies' to you?
Oh...I have a BIG problem with it.. I've said nothing to suggest I support those things. It sounds like it's perfectly OK with you that a statist entity attacks my liberty in the name of this or that. (as they always do). Why, as long as they say it's for someone's "good"..then it must be. Maybe someday you will see the similarities in how those "greats" like Reagan, FDR, and Wilson were perfectly complicit in helping coroporate exploitation along in the name of their holy causes.
I certainly agree they did. TR as well. By reforming the capitalist system, TR and FDR may have saved it from socialism.
Reagan basically gave the keys to the kingdom to corporate interests, and the whole economic collapse can be laid at his door. The whole de regulation basically meant we gave criminals the right to rob the bank...and that we'd bail them out for doing it because otherwise we'd all go down.
In any society, you are going to give up some of your liberty...there's no way around i
"In any society, you are going to give up some of your liberty"
By choice or coercion?
The founders thought it should be choice... so do I. Say I don't want to support some holy war in say...Iraq or give money to your holy cause in Dafur. Or give money to fund your daughter's education or abortion or TARP bailout. It's perfectly OK for you to have the police enact violence on my person in order to fund your holy cause. Don't believe Me? Try not paying your taxes one year.
SLave morality...Nietzsche defined master morality as the morality of the strong-willed. What is good is what is helpful; what is bad is what is harmful. Morality as such is sentiment. In the prehistoric state, "the value or non-value of an action was derived from its consequences"[1] but ultimately, "There are no moral phenomena at all, only moral interpretations of phenomena."
You mistake fascism with a false left/right paradigm. It is simply one entity Regardless of the "D" or "R" by the persons name. You see, Jessica and people like me believe we have no masters because we wish to live in a world devoid of control by people like you and the groups you think define us.
Look, You benefit from all the advantages of civilization like clean (well basically) water, roads, communications, eduction, and everything else you receive and then you put on an attitude like you're outside of it all, a rugged individual who doesn't need anything.
You're fooling yourself, and you're just posing as an individual.
Go live in the woods if you don't like what society has to offer...other wise, you do own something back.
I have a lot of respect for people that go it alone...
No Rousseau thought to live in the woods and he bred of alot of great mischief. Yes..please tell me again how these advantages can only be overcome by one entity and that I owe to someone. No other possibilities can we fathom? I give to society of my own will, not by force. This is the thing that disturbs me about collectivists. They say they're all about liberty, but they would use violence against me if I did not comply with their version of society. What hypocrisy.
Don't give up Thirdshiftzombie. . There is a renaissance around the corner. This Global Corporate Financial Empire is coming down. It is to corrupt & immoral to survive. It will be replaced with the American system & you will have opportunity again. Let's protest peacefully & loudly & support FDR style leadership. Support LaRouche. This old man has the guts, knowledge & FDR leadership quality we need to get the job done. spread the news. Google: LaRouche Webcast: September 8, 2009
It makes me angry to see this will never come to fruition. But, what can we do but, protest. We are too weak, too soft, too comfortable to ever stage an armed revolt. We might as well just accept the fact that "we people" is no longer a reality. I just lost my home to foreclosure I have no hope or faith in anything. Why do I live in a corrupt and greedy nation ? A poor man is not a free man.
How to fix this economy? We do what FDR did. 1 A new Pacora Commission. 2 Put financial system through a orderly bankruptcy. 3 Restore glass-steagall. 4 Put back in a fixed exchange rate system & screw Free Trade. 5 Put people to work by investing in education, water & power, farming, mining, engineering & other infrastructure projects we need in order to produce the raw materials needed in order to make products we need & desire. Screw Wall Street! Google: LPACTV Emergency Statement
Why should anyone be entitled to a job? I would argue that no man is entitled to a job. Employment is a transaction one man pays in the currency of his labor to receive a resource that he deems more valuable than his time. Money. If one is entitled to a job, what is the incentive to actually achieve, or succeed? There is none. Why should those who think/create compromise their vision to ineptitude? There is no logical reason. Mr. Roosevelt is asking men to willingly be sacrificed.
For example, if I say "every one has the right to have a job" it means that I can or cannot take advantage of that right. IT'S NOT AN OBLIGATION. It just says that IF I want to have a job, I should have the right to one.
It is an obligation. You must force someone to supply that job. Are you suggesting that prospective employers not take personal qualifications into account?
Now you will say the government will provide it.
Then I will say what's the difference between that and welfare?
You will say because they are working.
I will say, but what are they producing.
Jobs are a privilege by virtue of having the ability to perform the task. If you do not have the required skill set why employ you?
You see...that's where you're wrong. If you have a GOOD QUALITY PUBLIC EDUCATION system, then you wouldn't have to worry about people being unskilled, 'cause almost anyone would have a skill in something. Just look at France, Germany or Finland (they have the best educational systems in the world): all have public education and have a VERY high living standard. Does that makes them commies? Not in a million years.
Nothing you said repudiates what I said, what you said has very little to do with the right to a job.
But if people are not using the public education system, what obligation do they have to pay for it. Why not improve the education system as a whole by creating a voucher system or a tax credit system. If you send your kids to a private school you should be exempt from the portion of your property taxes that goes toward the public school system.
@richardsimones FDR is asking everyone to be more than what they are.... to be better than what they are. There has NEVER been a more higher calling than to serve your fellow man. Love and logic that made the US prosperous. Never, EVER..... forget that.
I just saw this Flick last night... Capitalism: A Love Story... The video has been hidden from America, for whatever reason... It is such a disgrace... This is may be the best, most influential video I think I've ever seen!! "Because it (passing the 2nd Bill of Rights) is definately a responsibility of the Congress so to do..."
I agree. We need to return to a FDR style government and rebuild this country & create a future. We need a new renaissance. That FDR style leadership does exist today. Google Video: LaRouche webcast sept 8 2009
I will be sure to check out Michael Moore's new video. I've seen some previews. "looks good"

I wonder why if in the 1940s our leaders could see that this is the right direction to head why it has waned so much today. These Rights seem like a no-brainer but they have been sacrificed or diminished at the expense of the worker. As long as Greed and shareholders rights hold more value with our leaders and corporations than the well being of the people who work for these companies this will be the largest obstacle for the working people of America.
mastershawn84 2 years ago 4
Actually, only a no-brainer considers the second bill of rights actual rights.
A right cannot put an unwanted burden on others. All of those things named in the second bill of rights are man-made goods and services, so how can anyone logically have a right to them without it being slave labor?
sonrouge 2 years ago
It's good to hear someone talking sense on this subject. It is exactly what we are up against today. Nobody else, has the right to take from sonrouge, or me, or you, what has been legally gained by our work, to give to someone who has less. That is one of the reasons why we have worked to create a prosperous business, so we can choose and have the ability to take care of US and OUR FAMILIES first, THEN be charitable to the causes we believe in.

freakish213 1 year ago
FDR had a misunderstanding of what rights are. You don't have a right to someone else's services. We have the right to buy a gun, but we don't have the right to be given a gun. We have the right to buy healthcare, but we don't have the right to be given healthcare. If you believe that someone else's services are 'rights', then you believe in at least partial slavery. You can't enact this second bill of rights without destroying the first bill of rights.

soulshaker123 2 years ago
Statists are all about generating anger and hate at someone. Logic is never a factor.
One thing I've always noticed about the "Tax the rich and give it to the poor" crowd is how they never have provided a logical reason for it. They've only said "Why should the rich have more than you?" as though it should be an automatic assumption that being rich is somehow wrong.

I hope that this comes with the Revolution.

he chooses his words very carefully.

I know some of the homeless and poor are in their position due to their own fault or mental instability, but I highly doubt that is the majority.
uberdylan 2 years ago
So you think the property owners have no rights?
Economic rights is respecting property rights. You think someone is evil because he provides a good or service that the general public wants and is willing to exchange their money for?
JessicaBelle81 2 years ago
No, I think someone is evil when he manipulates the system to deprive the general public of their money in the first place. Redistribution of wealth results in the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people.

It means the money passes throught the system, meaning there's more economic mobility...

What is evil to you?

"One of the greatest delusions is the hope that evil will be cured by legislation". It doesn't happen.
hokieguy95 2 years ago
So, the rights of the privileged usurp the rights of the many? The rights of the few over the rights of the needy? We should live in a world where 2% of the people control 98% of the wealth...And this is good WHY?
No one gets ahead, the decks are stacked, we live in an age of corporate robbers barons, you listen to lies on your radio and TV, lies that if you bow to your corporate masters and buy what they sell you you too will get ahead in this world.
Then they oursource your job to China.
Garret00074 2 years ago
You cannot have rights of the many without the individual. And who gives that 2% power? You wish to trade one corporation for another. What a wonderful idea our government had to give corps "rights". So let's see, your wish for a corporate government supporting corporate business and they do this by using corporate media? Please sell the garbage of government benevolence to the other 98% who buy it. Any institution that is not classically liberal overtime becomes collectivist and statist.

Maybe someday you will see the similarities in how those "greats" like Reagan, FDR, and Wilson were perfectly complicit in helping coroporate exploitation along in the name of their holy causes.
hokieguy95 2 years ago
I certainly agree they did. TR as well. By reforming the capitalist system, TR and FDR may have saved it from socialism.
Reagan basically gave the keys to the kingdom to corporate interests, and the whole economic collapse can be laid at his door. The whole de regulation basically meant we gave criminals the right to rob the bank...and that we'd bail them out for doing it because otherwise we'd all go down.
In any society, you are going to give up some of your liberty...there's no way around i
Garret00074 2 years ago

Fear is the mother of morality.

Seems you have wrong concept of right.
For example, if I say "every one has the right to have a job" it means that I can or cannot take advantage of that right. IT'S NOT AN OBLIGATION. It just says that IF I want to have a job, I should have the right to one.
cybermiguelo 2 years ago
It is an obligation. You must force someone to supply that job. Are you suggesting that prospective employers not take personal qualifications into account?
Now you will say the government will provide it.
Then I will say what's the difference between that and welfare?
You will say because they are working.
I will say, but what are they producing.
Jobs are a privilege by virtue of having the ability to perform the task. If you do not have the required skill set why employ you?
richardsimones 2 years ago
You see...that's where you're wrong. If you have a GOOD QUALITY PUBLIC EDUCATION system, then you wouldn't have to worry about people being unskilled, 'cause almost anyone would have a skill in something. Just look at France, Germany or Finland (they have the best educational systems in the world): all have public education and have a VERY high living standard. Does that makes them commies? Not in a million years.
cybermiguelo 2 years ago
Nothing you said repudiates what I said, what you said has very little to do with the right to a job.
But if people are not using the public education system, what obligation do they have to pay for it. Why not improve the education system as a whole by creating a voucher system or a tax credit system. If you send your kids to a private school you should be exempt from the portion of your property taxes that goes toward the public school system.
Please recognize this is a subject change.
