Americans are in denial of how bad their health is. The life expectancy of a typical american is a whopping 7 years less than the average australian's. A recent us/british study found the top 10% of richest americans have about the same level of health as the poorest 10 % of Brits (only they pay top dollar for the priviledge). It was noted in this study that 'fear' and 'stress' about losing a job & not being covered have a health-reducing effect on well-being.

We could run the health service as it is at present (the NHS) through foundations or charities, with no central body controlling them and they could rely on donations.

I woudn´t want to make people´s well being dependent on the income from voluntary donations. Furthermore there are certain groups which would get no help, cause nobody would donate for them.
Donations & foundations are an additional source of help, but they can´t replace steady supply.
If you keep profits and patents (artificial monopolies) out of the health care system, it could be much cheaper.
I don´t think that taxes are the best solution to finance health care. A peoples insurance where everybody has to spent some money for (along one´s possibilities) would be better.
This solution would be independent from the organization of society, cause you can set it up in decentralized structures like working collectives and communities as well as in a national state.
However in regional decentralized structures a system of exchange could be implemented to help poorer communities.
Milton Friedman says there's four ways to spend money, the spending your own money on yourself, spending your own money on someone else, spending someone else's money on yourself and spending someone else's money on someone else.
Waste is what pisses me off about the government running healthcare, the NHS spends money willy nilly because its not their own, personal money, they get paid regardless. They keep people on long waiting lists because they can't go elsewhere.

I saw this on TV when it first aired and it made be very, VERY angry. But the thing that angered me most about this was the complete whitewash of the reason WHY public hospitals are closing. Economic downturn? Might have some small impact if the hospital stupidly invests capital in the stock market.
The majority reason though is health care STOLEN by immigrant criminals. So much stolen that the hospital cannot keep its doors open any longer and Americans are left to suffer and die.
The solution is simple.....we must pass laws making it a felony to provide care to non-citizens and forcing care givers to document that patients are citizens or face jail time. Illegals needs to be rounded up and deported (if not shot on the spot). Anyone has a problem with it? Perhaps they should be shot on the spot as well. Understand the consequences of what they are doing.....unless you would prefer to wait until it is YOU or YOUR loved onces facing those consequences.

In England I see a doctor the same day 100% of the time & it is top quality service believe me! There can be a waiting list for some operations (not life threatening ones) but normally it is only a couple of months which gives you time to prepare for it anyway! If you don't wish to wait, you can buy private health care (known as BUPA).

Listen up folks! I don't know why people have to fear socialized health care, use Canada as an example. Sure things aren't perfect, some people will fall through the cracks everywhere. But when it comes to cancer, My Uncle received timely cancer treatment when he needed it. Unfortunately the Lymphoma advanced too far, and did not survive. I personally have a friend who is ill with cancer. Because of timely treatment, he most likely will get better.
I was recently released from the hospital after a bout of pneumonia, bronchitis, sleep apnea, and an unexpected heart condition. It set me back about $15,000 for an 8 day stay (5 in intensive care). But I had to cancel my appointments with the heart doctor, because doctors expect payment at time of service....and I'm out of money. Health Care sucks in america

Only a small amount of doctors and medical personal actually get into medicine to actually help people so they are not going to work for free . There should be reality credit for doctors who do that kinda work on patients with no insurance or just some kind of compensation because people need that care.

If we had universal healthcare...this problem would also be Universal, rather than only being isolated to uninsured people (Which I am one).
I would much rather go into debt, going to a private hospital for treatment...than die, with "Universal coverage" that decides, the country cant afford to treat me.

Bullshit. I live in the UK and my life was saved by the heathcare I received here. It was first class. In the US it would have cost me $580k and I would now be uninsurable. In the UK, my health cover costs me a 3% surcharge tax on my income tax (called a NIC - a National Insurance Contribution).

socialized health care guarantees everyone mediocre health care if they don't mind waiting long enough. to be fair, i don't mind going to a mediocre doctor for something minor, but if i need open heart surgery, i want the best doctor in the world and i don't mind paying through the nose for it. socialized health care is the wrong answer and it's a failed system. i feel fortunate to live in a nation where i have access to the best health care in the world if i absolutely need it.

Here in England we do have a national health service (fees are charged if you want to get a procedure done early) but its not all its cooked up to be.
An MEP appeared on Fox News in the US recently warning America not to get universal, free healthcare.

Democracy without pre-imposed limits on governmental power (the US has these in the form of the American constitution) is dangerous.

I´m not a fan of taxation either, but I see no other way to ensure distribution of money for common needs and services, as long as workers aren´t ruling and organizing their workplaces by themselves.

You need a reliable basis for elemental services like housing, health care and food.
I woudn´t want to make people´s well being dependent on the income from voluntary donations. Furthermore there are certain groups which would get no help, cause nobody would donate for them.
Donations & foundations are an additional source of help, but they can´t replace steady supply.
If you keep profits and patents (artificial monopolies) out of the health care system, it could be much cheaper.

I don´t think that taxes are the best solution to finance health care. A peoples insurance where everybody has to spent some money for (along one´s possibilities) would be better.
This solution would be independent from the organization of society, cause you can set it up in decentralized structures like working collectives and communities as well as in a national state.
However in regional decentralized structures a system of exchange could be implemented to help poorer communities.

Waste is what pisses me off about the government running healthcare, the NHS spends money willy nilly because its not their own, personal money, they get paid regardless. They keep people on long waiting lists because they can't go elsewhere.

this is fucked up no matter how you look at it! i come from italy where there is universal health care, and i never understood why the biggest and most powerful country in the world consider health care a BENEFIT as oppose to a HUMAN RIGHT! for a country that consider itself one of the most christian place in the world,it just sounds so UNCHRISTIAN!

I saw this on TV when it first aired and it made be very, VERY angry. But the thing that angered me most about this was the complete whitewash of the reason WHY public hospitals are closing. Economic downturn? Might have some small impact if the hospital stupidly invests capital in the stock market.
The majority reason though is health care STOLEN by immigrant criminals. So much stolen that the hospital cannot keep its doors open any longer and Americans are left to suffer and die.

The solution is simple.....we must pass laws making it a felony to provide care to non-citizens and forcing care givers to document that patients are citizens or face jail time. Illegals needs to be rounded up and deported (if not shot on the spot). Anyone has a problem with it? Perhaps they should be shot on the spot as well. Understand the consequences of what they are doing.....unless you would prefer to wait until it is YOU or YOUR loved onces facing those consequences.

dude, i work for the federal govt, and a very SMALL percentage of the country getting healthcare are illegals.......regardless of that, its bullshit to have to pay upwards of $500 for fucking insurance, the problem is not illegals and terrorism or other BS, its the fucking fact that we have the same type of crooks running the medical industry as we do running the auto industry, stock market and etc.

Man watching this video just pisses me off, just like sicko. I really really hope we get something done quick for the sake of the millions of sick, uninsured and nearly dying :(. There is no reason why the US is the most powerful and yet the ONLY country in the west without universal health care for the citizens. The greed has to end and make these GOP road blocks realize health care is a right not a privilege.

It makes me laugh when I hear Americans are scared of 'socialised' health care. Do they not realise that the post office & library are government run?
In England I see a doctor the same day 100% of the time & it is top quality service believe me! There can be a waiting list for some operations (not life threatening ones) but normally it is only a couple of months which gives you time to prepare for it anyway! If you don't wish to wait, you can buy private health care (known as BUPA).

Allowing the citizens of the most powerful country on earth to go through this is dispicable.
Thank goodness I live in a far more civilised country, England. I receive 5 star medical help for absolutely free (it's paid for by our taxes which happen to be lower than Americans!!).

Now, that said... If I have an emergency, or I need to see a doctor at my local hospital, I shouldn't have to worry about insurance, or if I have enough money to pay for it. Some of you will bring up various tariffs/charges with regard to the health care. If you still look at the large picture, it is universal health care, and a large percentage of the time IT DOES WORK!

Listen up folks! I don't know why people have to fear socialized health care, use Canada as an example. Sure things aren't perfect, some people will fall through the cracks everywhere. But when it comes to cancer, My Uncle received timely cancer treatment when he needed it. Unfortunately the Lymphoma advanced too far, and did not survive. I personally have a friend who is ill with cancer. Because of timely treatment, he most likely will get better.

I was recently released from the hospital after a bout of pneumonia, bronchitis, sleep apnea, and an unexpected heart condition. It set me back about $15,000 for an 8 day stay (5 in intensive care). But I had to cancel my appointments with the heart doctor, because doctors expect payment at time of service....and I'm out of money. Health Care sucks in america

Not only are these people sentnced to death, but a very painful death. In the '60's Joan Baez had a song Dona Dona, in which she said 'the rich will live but the poor will die'. I thought she was crazy at the time. I couldn't imagine how money could mean life.

Only a small amount of doctors and medical personal actually get into medicine to actually help people so they are not going to work for free . There should be reality credit for doctors who do that kinda work on patients with no insurance or just some kind of compensation because people need that care.

Very true and those that glorify corporate and commercial privatized health care are conveniently ignoring the fact that the reason medical care and medicines are so expensive is the greed and hypocrisy built into the system designed to fail the average citizen. Examples weve all seen repeatedly as those who have worked and paid into the system their entire lives only to have crucial care withheld or denied not by a physician, but by an insurance agent all in the name of profit and Capitalism.

This is only one reason why we need, we MUST have national health care. Where are the neo cons now? I don't have insurance any more either. Declined 4 times because I have high cholesterol but was offered a 'cheap' plan at $479 a month that would cover hospital only at 75/25 with a $2000 deductable. This is BS - health care is a right not a priveledge like the GOP thinks.

Sadly, national health care wasn't mentioned in this peace, and it rarely is in mainstream news. We should all be writing our congressmen, demanding single payer health care.
