  • 34 people don't know good music

  • What is going on? People murdering children, murdering their parents, their spouse, their neighbors, and innocent strangers. Marvin's message is still very true today. We must stop showing hate, talk things out, instead of finding things to fight about!!! I'm only 15yrs. old, but I know that all of this killing is wrong, and in the end will be our downfall. Well said Mr. Marvin Gaye. What is going on??

  • HOW can 34 people dislike this ? Its one of the most sublime songs ever sung.Dont understand,if you dont like it why listen to it?

  • people, don't lose hope! There still is such a good thing as "good" music nowadays!!! it just never gets famous. So go buy and support the music which we all here love, and never want to see die!!

  • RE: music today being rubbish. So this song came out in 1971. If you go and check out the billboard top 100 for that year there are some great songs on it. There are also a bunch of songs I've never heard of and a few I wish I'd never heard of... The music we hear from 20 or 30 years ago is generally the best from that era and it wasn't always popular at the time. I do agree that compression and all the other tweaks are used far too much. I like me some dynamics.

  • the shit they produce today is not music, it makes me sick to listen to it.Marvin Gaye and Teddy Pendergrass and of course Barry White the Ojays and the Spinners ,now thats what you call music.the old stuff has depth and meaning soul and heart to it.the shit they put out today is trash,it has absolutely no soul to it AT ALL !!! give me all the soul and R & B music from back in the day and i will be just fine with that, they can keep this new crap they call music, and by the way,i am a white boy.

  • the shit they produce today is not music, it makes me sick to listen to it.Marvin Gaye and Teddy Pendergrass and of course Barry White the Ojays and the Spinners ,now thats what you call music.the old stuff has depth and meaning soul and heart to it.the shit they put out today is trash,it has absolutely no soul to it AT ALL !!! give me all the soul and R & B music from back in the day and i will be just fine with that, they can keep this new crap they call music,oh and by the way,im a white boy

  • Funny how things come back around. I remember my father coming back from Vietnam, and hearing this music when I was little. Different time, same message!

  • Did Marvin perfect the future with this song and "Inner City Blues"?

  • @ViolinSnowKid2 I think he has.

  • Gotta love Motown music xD

  • its like he made the song yesterday....

  • @TheNoobPube Listen to me, modern music isn't bad, the production is. I love artists like lady gaga and skrillex but the albums are fatiguing to listen to. They have no dynamic range whatsoever. Even modern mastering engineers are tired of the loudness race.

  • that is bullshit, music is not dead, and currently there is a whole bunch of bands that if you really cared to discover, you would know what im saying. just a small protion: the mars volta, tortoise, sleepy sun, warpaint, john frusciante, bright eyes, at the drive-in, blonde redhead, swahili blonde, vincent gallo, tv on the radio, the black keys, yann tiersen, jonny greenwood, cat power, wilco, and many, many more.

  • @DreaminMyLifeAway Call me "out-of-touch", but besides the brilliant Vincent Gallo, I have not heard of one of those artists you mention. Nor will any of them go down in history like Marvin.

  • I should have put in my opinion in that comment so I wouldn't get other comments except for the one I replied to. I'm not mad, just don't need someone to call me narrow minded, I didn't say, " That's not music no matter what anyone says."

  • @DrOptimisation THANK YOU! It's so annoying when I see the younger generation discover older music and then preach about it all over YouTube like it's the gospel and how ALL music (past & present) should be like. Music is a beautiful thing. It's constantly changing and constantly re-inventing itself.

  • hey brother whats happenin'

  • 32 people don't know what's going on

  • Who dislikes this classic song??? this song rings true even today! Its a beautiful song with a message that lives on and means even more today.

  • @devious575 right he was so ahead of his time that it like he is talking about now i dont see how anyone can hate marvin or i should say dislike this song

  • Happy MLK Day

  • The issue isn't that modern music is trash and older music is better. Keep in mind that at one time distorted electric guitars were consider loud, noisy trash. Guys like Buddy Holly couldn't even get gigs for experimenting with that new sound of rock. People said this about Synthesizers "that's not a real instrument!" But synths survived it all and helped shape a new era of sound, just ask Stevie Wonder, who embraced it. The music isn't the issue. The TALENT is what's missing. THAT is the issue.

  • Sing it baby!

  • I was born in 1949 and was also married to a man in 1966 who was in the Military, would you believe this song was banned from being played on Military bases. seeing Marvin Gaye and loving his music...I still played it, that's what freedom is all about !

  • Everyone who says that all music today sucks is fucking retarded and isn't really into music anyway.

  • ooh the top comments are opposite yet valid viewpoints...intriguing.

  • My childhood, my hopes, my dreams, my music...

  • marvin had a great voice

  • i love you marvin RIP man u were the greatest!!!!!!

  • Timeless.

  • Who are they to judge us, simply cuz our hair is long?

  • check out pbp189 last night i was dreaming project

  • people say the stupidest shit on youtube...why can't someone just say "wow, what a pretty song. I sure do enjoy the bass line"? its time for a change people, we need to stop this nonsense and comment about the SONG or the VIDEO or the BAND or something, not about how bad music is now a days or something even worse like a cyber argument. I mean i try not to read the comments because half the time it's just pointless shit and i'd love to see more positive comments.

  • Thank you brother Marvin for the inspiration. I used your voice and wisdom in my cover of your timeless classic. I hope you would be proud. I wish I had got the opportunity to sit down and chat with you when you were alive. But, I'll see you in heaven with brothers Otis and MJ.

  • this song pretty much screams to his brothers why they kill each other with their little gangster attitudes & tactics. I mean, for real he wrote it about Vietnam. Or did he? Cuz the lyrics serve his home town just fine.

  • @DrOptimisation I

actually I don't agree with .. yes we are noticing a huge differences between the past and present, nowadays music is shit .. we do't need to be judgmental to say that , just we need to listen to both of them . simple sense !

  • One of Motown's biggest legends, Marvin Gaye. Can you hear the message in the song?

  • @DrOptimisation I sort of agree, but do you really think electric crap with not good rhythm or no real instruments and rapping about sex or talking, yes talking, about sex all of the time is music. Come on, I know that isn't real music. I can tell the difference when I listen to a song with real instruments and all fake, and the real instruments sound much better. You have to dig deep today to find modern decent music.

  • @MrZulu2065 Marvin did write a lot of sexual music, though, that was what sold at the time (and still is). it was just a lot more subtle, but he is well known for writing Let's Get It On. I get what you're saying, though, music is mostly done on a computer these days, but that doesn't mean it's not music at all. to someone, somewhere out there, those weird electronic beats are art. personally i don't really like it, though, this is more my style, soul music and rock

  • @nightmareX1993 wtf u talking about? this page is not about "lets get it on". this page is about war & shit. you wanna talk sex, go to another song, dude.

  • @MrZulu2065 Music is music. Just because YOU don't like a particular type of music, does not discredit it at all. All it does is make you narrow-minded.

  • @Wheelio Shut up. Just shut up. Now listen, or read. I did not say that the people who listen to it are stupid, I just have an opinion that modern music to day isn't really good music. Aren't I entitled to MY opinion? I don't need you to call me narrow minded. I love lots of music and you have to dig deep today to find nic new music in my opinion. How am I narrow minded for my opinion. Shut the hell up! >:D

  • @MrZulu2065 Where in my comment did I say that you called people stupid for listening to today's music? You can say you don't like today's music (which is what you should have said in the first place,) but to say it's "not music" is just plain ignorant. I understood what you said perfectly the first time, you just worded it in a way that came off as extremely unfounded.

  • @Wheelio It's my opinion, that doesn't make me ignorant. I understand it was made as music, I I I just feel that it's stupid music. It's repetitive, has a lot of dislikers and growing, the people are lazy who make it, I can juust make a song today and it could be published. Didn't I say I was entitled to my opinion. I just feel it isn't real music. Can we close this now?

  • @DrOptimisation How can you say that? Producers and engineers all over the world are murdering the soul and dynamics of music both live and in the studio with pitch correction, quantization, and over-compression. Musicians are becoming lazy, letting producers fix their recordings on the computer making them sound like loud robots no matter genre of music. Marvin Gaye would NOT approve of this. I'm 18 and I'd rather stay stuck here than in badly produced noise they call music.

  • @MrRoboto66

Well said. Time for an Auto-Tune Parade of Shame.

  • @MrRoboto66 Dude open your mind a little bit. There is so much fucking amazing new music out there that it's just silly to claim it's all bad. Every week there are multiple albums that are released by artists who put absolutely everything they have into their music. All these aspects of modern music that you mention as negatives should just be looked at as tools (that's what they really are) to get new sounds, feelings, and ideas out of music. Music does not equal recorded live performance.

  • @biskwikman Look, every album released within the last 12 years has been over-compressed and over-processed, it's hard for me to listen to a lot of my favorite artists because of this. How would you like it if everyone completely stopped selling regular soda for diet and there was nothing you could do about it? (I hate diet soda) So again, the artists of today aren't bad its just that the production is so horrible that it's hard for me to tell if the music is good.

  • @MrRoboto66 Oh, please.. I see literally millions of you younger kids go on and on about how "today's music isn't the same" and whatnot. Guess what? People were saying that same thing back in the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, etc. Music evolves. Learn to adapt, or fall behind the times.

  • @MrRoboto66 then you are ignorant because theres alot of people who still make real music. stop listening to pop charts and youll figure that out yourself. its possible to like more than one thing remember people back then would have said the same thing about the "modern" musicians of that time.open your mind

  • @TheNoobPube I think that's his point. Back in the day you didn't have to stay away from the pop charts. Nowadays you have to dig under the bullshit to find something decent.

  • @jerseyirish i want to make it clear that this is a friendly debate :) . it has always been like that and mabye not to the same extent because there wasnt any internet and so the only way to get music would be on the radio or by buying from a shop who would only buy music that they know is going to sell well(aka chart music) this made it impossible to be popular unless you were very good or new the right people(frank sinatra used the maffia to scare the networks into "liking him" .

  • @jerseyirish continued ... there is still as much good music now and i agree that you do have to sieve through the bad ones but that is only because we have more choice of music now we live in a society were the majority of people just buy music to party.

  • @MrRoboto66 Modern music isn't bad, try listening to some stuff that isn't popular.

  • @MrRoboto66 ....u record a song..and for your info 8 track had been invented...therefore they could and did fix their mistakes...

  • 31 people don't know what's going on.

  • @GilliamFan Or they don't have the good taste that we do ♥♥

  • @NYChica23 we dont, im 16 nd ive grown to up my whole life listening to this music. Now we talk about stupid things, nd we're basically taking our minds off the real things. I listen to rap dnt get me wrong but only to get ready to play for football games nd thats it.

  • good song

  • Today's music is nothing.. It's not a change, it's a demolition.. the only thing left is a beat.. and that's barely there.

  • @Reymius yeah i blam the industry and radio stations. there's still real artist caring on tradition but they dont get shine.

  • a commercial?? whyyyyyy

  • @kwmoonccmoon What??

  • Doing essays to this song is heaven

  • gimme soul ...................

  • Some of you just don't Get the messaGe....Damn Shame....But you understand Lil Wayne......

  • I've never heard this song before until today, and after today I'll probably forget it. One word: BORING.

  • @VitalSigns1

have you ever thought of ending your miserable life? Cockroach...

  • @boneshake83 I listen to rock and metal, this is just boring, I can't get into it

  • @VitalSigns1 Starting a sentence of with the phrase "I like rock and metal" is like saying "yeah, I'm basically retarded but..." Marvin Gaye did not sing those genres. O.o

Furthermore, any artist who associates their music with supremely BROAD genres like that clearly don't have the capacity to write a truly touching song with such deep social commentary as Marvin Gaye has in Whats Going On.

  • @bastardsonofsatan Look, you're being an asshole. I'm not disrespecting the man or his music, I'm simply saying that I don't dig it. What would you like me to do huh? FORCE myself to enjoy it? I looked up the song because it was on the top of a Greatest Songs list and I wanted to see if I liked it. Not only do I not like it, but I don't even recognize it, and I won't remember it either.

  • @VitalSigns1 That's most likely because you don't know the roots of music. you're probably a teenager that thinks slipnot or some crappy rapper, like gaga, made origina music. This is music plain and simple

  • @darrius13sniper I hate slipknot and lady gaga. I listen to the Beatles and the Rolling Stones

  • @VitalSigns1 My bad then. Rolling stones are better than beetles though.

  • @VitalSigns1 I don't want to start some stupid cyber war, but if you don't like it, do you really need to comment? seems like the other 31 people didn't bother commenting on a song you didn't like

  • i love marvin gaye, but you all must know how physically abusive he was with his women.

  • BUT I WILL if you just show some concern for me.

  • Leonard where is the REAL you? Your money wont save you.

  • Marvin let's fight this spiritual WAR. BILLY HAS NO POWER.

  • sadly applicable to modern times...

  • This is one of his greatest songs, no doubt about it.

  • the 4th greatest song of all time according to rolling stone magazine..

don't get me wrong, it's a good song but 4th? i guess it's not really my style

  • @ckb1137 they named it 4th because of the story behind the scenes. this song was marvin calling for peace. both in vietnam and with his dad. his dad was basically an extremely strict religious zealot who marvin was never able to make proud through his accomplishments in music, and they had a lot of arguments. hes trying to reach out to his dad in this song, as well as his brother who was in vietnam at the time. in 1984 marvin was shot by his dad following a family argument

  • @magua4 u deserve the top comment thumbs up

  • i think the people the that clicked dislike did it on accident they had to of who in there right mind do not like marvin gaye

  • Yes, a prophet. A talent so unique and beautiful, it makes being alive just that much better. He was so phenomenol he was able to sing the National Anthem, an infamously difficult piece of vocal music, and completely own it. He was a gift, a singular talent and a man who made our nation a bit better with his musical gifts and political message of peace and unity. Love and honor to you Marvin, gone too soon. xoxo

  • hopefully in another 10 years this song won't seem like it was written today

  • 24 I dont know what kind of people hate this??? wow.....have a happy life guys..wow

  • I wish Marvin was still here today!

  • What's going on, you ask? Big business -.-

  • Arguably in the top 5 songs of all-time, many would say right there at number 1. This is simply one of the most conscious songs to ever be recorded. I guess the irony is when Marvin first played it for Berry Gordy, he stated it was "The worst record I ever heard"... needless to say that Gordy's analysis proved to be filled with great error. This song right here has touched the lives of millions upon millions. May Marvin Gaye truly rest in peace.

  • @poetryselite I could'nt have said it any better.
