Sphere is not really a good shape for lava lamp. Most lava lamps are made into tower shape for good reasons. The wax gets the chance to get hot and cool at different height. Most use a tapered shape so the wax cool faster when it reach the top. You should problem add a dimmer so that the heat can be adjusted to avoid the boiling effect. Slow flow looks better.

True, and erlenmeyer flask is better suited, but the project was a present for an environmentally minded sister, so the globe shape with the green and blue colors better represented planet Earth. There is a dimmer to better control the 100 watt bulb in the custom built base. :)

It's commercial lava goo. You can basically shop on craigslist for used lava lamps, warm the goo inside it until it just starts to flow, then you can pour it carefully into a pyrex glass container. Don't forget to put the spring from the old lamp into your new container. You can recycle the old lava lamp base as your heating element.
