I just downloaded this tonight, and i had always thought that doom was more of my game and that quake just didn't seem to good to me, even though i had never really played the game. I have to say that after playing this game it is now probably my favorite fps game ever made. the first fight with the fiend was awesome. (really the fiend is kind of weak, but it took me by suprise and too me it was an awesome fight.)
How did you get this to work? I got Quake in the Quakecon pack on steam, installed the game, tried setting it to 1920 x 1080 and the graphics messed up, the colours went all weird.
Also iirc it said something like you had to insert the resolution into the console window, but it didn't tell you exactly what to type...
@thegreatkenz Well techinallcay wolvenstin 3d was the first fps. And then doom made the fps a huge market. And quake *fun fact* was the first TRUE 3d game ever. And it also invented cilent servers. Which is what most online services still use today. But ya doom and quake are beast. And these game and many other amazing games are crushed underneath a bus due to overrated games like call of duty. And yes ill even admit games like halo crush other games as.I dont like this generation of games

I remember cacking my pants playing the shareware demo in the dark back in '96 on my brothers colossal Pentium 75. It was fabulous and those enemy noises are still nasty. I always think of Doom,Doom 2 and Quake as the 50's Rock & Roll of videogames. Lean,mean and exciting. I love modern games but they have an unbeatable purity. Timeless.
I wish there was a way game developers would bring their old games back and make them popular again. Or atleast make an event where old games are the most popular for a while. I miss all old games, and quite frankly im sick of CoD games and others that look too real.
Is there still a way to get this game running with the original Team Fortress? I found the original quake somewhere a few months ago, but the original Team Fortress mod is still a mystery for me...

Ah, the chainsaw ogre... long ago, I thought that the ogre makes the chainsaw rev-up noise when it sees you, not the chainsaw. For that reason, it was my favorite enemy.
I was 10-11 years old when I first laid my hands on this masterpiece. Fuckin' game made me & my buddies skip a lot from school, just to go & play this till we had bloodshot eyes. Thanks for the memories id Software!
Theres TONS of reasons why Quake should be a respected game, but most of you are stupid for bashing COD just because you can do it with an audience your comfortable with. By the way Quake 1 was awarded best game of the year 1996 defeated Duke Nukem. Quake 3 was not as good as expected as it had Unreal to compete with it. Quake 1 was really historic and no game ever had such medieval places and such monsters again in 1996. All others that followed were just imitators and referred to as "Quake-like" to make them sell lol.
As a teen of this generation, this game is the shit man. Quake 1,2, and 3, all the best. I remember I used to play Quake 2 multiplayer all the time right after school...now I wanna do it again XD

I disagree. I think in 15 years the kids from now will look back at Modern Warfare etc, and will try to convince the kids of 2026 that in 2011, games had more character and flair because of their 'crude' graphics.
It's a cliché, but times change. Let's value Quake for what it was and is: A revolutionary game that we all loved when it came out, and that looks awesome but very dated fifteen years later.
@trmdtv I gotta disagree. The games that actually had character will be remembered fondly (like Quake and Half Life) and the ones that didn't won't be (like SiN.). Will the Call of Duty games be remembered with reverence? Maybe, but I doubt it. The truly well-designed and important games like HL2 probably have a much better shot at longevity than the more popular but more generic franchises. Time'll tell, but I can't image that in 10 years I'll stop playing Quake or HL2 just because they're old.
Yeah, I remember playing this. First I played Quake, then Quake: Phenomenom, then Quake: Eternal Darkness, then the two official mission packs, then Shrak, then Malice. I loved the devil/dark/evil admosphere. I don't see no first person shooters anymore with this atmosphere. It's always too much action/like seeing a movie/always multiplayer. My wish is to bring back the old days with only singleplayer pc real first person shooters.
This was a level that looks more science fiction/future. The second level and the levels after that were levels in the middle ages with devil signs and with a much more dark and more creepy atmosphere.
I remember when I was 11 or 12 and I only had the shareware version of this game. I would play this non stop, It was the only game I would play really besides Daggerfall and Doom 2.
I remember this small computer magazine and it would have an add in the last page about nightly Quake deathmatches on a certain server. Had a lot of great times with this game.
This is the best game ever made. Wicked sound track and endless replay value especially if you play with your buddies. One of the most heavy nostalgic things from the 90's. This was the first game I ever decided to purchase legitimately.
I wish someday they would release this on XBL as an HD arcade game.
You missed all of the secret areas! Besides the one throught the wall at the end. But there's at least three others 4 others you missed. And playing Nightmare is way better.
@SNAKECroatia .This was for me also back then but now I don't know. Back then I completed Duke in 320x200 resolution and Quake lagged in 400x300 so I had to play in 320x 240..
when i was playing this on an old computer, it gave me 320x240 max resolution, no sound and no shooting particles. So i'm going to install it on my intel extreme graphics 2 computer.
i really like these old games, i played enemy territory quake wars and it was alright, but i want to try one of these, but i dont know what system and where to get them from, but one of my favorite games is the original doom, so badass
I used to play this with headphones on in the dark. It used to scare the crap out of me! especially those zombies in the sewers, just the noise of them somewhere in the distance gave me the goose bumps. It would be a great game to relaunch on PSN as a download with the graphics tweaked and in HD.
Quake was so cool back in the day. It had such an AMAZING atmosphere. The levels were eerie, the enemies looked scary, and it had this medieval yet 'futuristic' kind of theme. I liked everything about it. And the multiplayer was just so fast paced and before that I never experienced deathmatch! I'd play on Mplayer for hours. :D
I remember getting to the end of this vid after about an hour - scared shitless, the graphics seemed awesome and the sounds were very effective. How things have changed!

i just can't beleive that anyone would care for this anymore, but after lord havoc released the darkplaces engine, i downloaded tons of game tweaks and upgrades and i never went back. totally love this game in high res

I disagree. I think in 15 years the kids from now will look back at Modern Warfare etc, and will try to convince the kids of 2026 that in 2011, games had more character and flair because of their 'crude' graphics.
It's a cliché, but times change. Let's value Quake for what it was and is: A revolutionary game that we all loved when it came out, and that looks awesome but very dated fifteen years later.
I'd still play it ;)

@trmdtv I gotta disagree. The games that actually had character will be remembered fondly (like Quake and Half Life) and the ones that didn't won't be (like SiN.). Will the Call of Duty games be remembered with reverence? Maybe, but I doubt it. The truly well-designed and important games like HL2 probably have a much better shot at longevity than the more popular but more generic franchises. Time'll tell, but I can't image that in 10 years I'll stop playing Quake or HL2 just because they're old.

Yeah, I remember playing this. First I played Quake, then Quake: Phenomenom, then Quake: Eternal Darkness, then the two official mission packs, then Shrak, then Malice. I loved the devil/dark/evil admosphere. I don't see no first person shooters anymore with this atmosphere. It's always too much action/like seeing a movie/always multiplayer. My wish is to bring back the old days with only singleplayer pc real first person shooters.

This was a level that looks more science fiction/future. The second level and the levels after that were levels in the middle ages with devil signs and with a much more dark and more creepy atmosphere.

I remember when I was 11 or 12 and I only had the shareware version of this game. I would play this non stop, It was the only game I would play really besides Daggerfall and Doom 2.
I remember this small computer magazine and it would have an add in the last page about nightly Quake deathmatches on a certain server. Had a lot of great times with this game.

This is the best game ever made. Wicked sound track and endless replay value especially if you play with your buddies. One of the most heavy nostalgic things from the 90's. This was the first game I ever decided to purchase legitimately.
I wish someday they would release this on XBL as an HD arcade game.

@SNAKECroatia .This was for me also back then but now I don't know. Back then I completed Duke in 320x200 resolution and Quake lagged in 400x300 so I had to play in 320x 240..

when i was playing this on an old computer, it gave me 320x240 max resolution, no sound and no shooting particles. So i'm going to install it on my intel extreme graphics 2 computer.

I used to play this with headphones on in the dark. It used to scare the crap out of me! especially those zombies in the sewers, just the noise of them somewhere in the distance gave me the goose bumps. It would be a great game to relaunch on PSN as a download with the graphics tweaked and in HD.

Quake was so cool back in the day. It had such an AMAZING atmosphere. The levels were eerie, the enemies looked scary, and it had this medieval yet 'futuristic' kind of theme. I liked everything about it. And the multiplayer was just so fast paced and before that I never experienced deathmatch! I'd play on Mplayer for hours. :D

Games like these were so amazing.
1. The sounds were so creepy for some reason. It's hard to explain.
2. The monster's/Enemies in the 90's had such a huge imagination. (The minute I met the chainsaw dudes and zombies...I could never sleep again.)
