Very intriguing piece. Thank you so much for making this film! I really enjoyed it. So refreshing to see real models that are well designed rather than that annoying CG sheen you see most of the time these days. I friend informs me that there is an Iain Banks novel out that has a race called the "Quietus" and from his description these seem to be the same dudes in your film. Another coincidence is that there is a recently released film called "Unearthed" that has a similar story. Look it up.
@silazcarbryck Unearthed is by Dalang films - you will need to search for both of those terms to find the film. You wont be disappointed believe me its worth it.
This is utterly superb stuff. Loved it from beginning to end. I miss this kind of thing, and it was one of the reasons why I loved Duncan Jones' 'Moon' so much. You simply do not have to have laser fights and explosions every few seconds to enjoy a film. A film can also be experienced and digested, and I think a lot of the cinema-going experience has been ruined by conveyor-belt multiplexes in which people are herded in to make sure the movie makes it's money back.
Remarkable and thoroughly enjoyable. Absolutely top-rate.Has a classic feel combined with modern effects and style. The musical score is just perfect. Kubrick couldn't have done this simple but beautiful little sci-fi story any better.
Congrats on making this film, its really like 2001. Both I think was -waith all the respect- boring. I mean the story could be told in 2 minutes. The critic in me says: 'Cats arrive on 5 shurikens to the dried earth looking for signal for their cellphones, but all they can find was cryochambers. Thanks for robbing 16 mins of my life.' On the other hand part of me thinks : 'Both 2001 and Quietus had brilliant vehicle models and good music, so respect for that.' Well its a tie.
This really needs to be a feature. This has the atmospheric feel of classic science fiction, something that modern sci-fi buries beneath excessive action sequences and explosions. I much prefer this style and really needs to make a comeback in one way or another.
@Hawdkoah Back when movies like Silent Running, Dune and 2001 were made, there was a fascination and wonder associated with space travel, both near future and far future. The appeal of a space movie was that it took place in space, and cinema often focussed on that aspect. Nowadays it's all about explosions and laser fights, and alien monsters, while the atmospheric wonder is lost. People don't want to see possible futures anymore, they just want explosions and tits.
Effects are great homage to 2001. Love the color & scores, especially. But the purpose of aliens is confusing. Do they come down to salvage their 'fetal' remains in the 'cocoons'? (The interior of the wreckage is awesome as well, with some hindu-inspired symbols representing life-affirming 'lingas'). Nice transaction from suspensful music to the waltz-like music as the snow-shaped ships float over the hot, desert landscape,
The purpose of the aliens is a routine survey and study of the dead planet, unaware that there is any life. The chamber housing the pods is manmade, constructed during the time when Earth's demise was inevitable. The human fetuses are in hibernation; the hope is that one day intelligent life will discover the chamber and harvest the pods back to their world, where the human race will have a rebirth.
Aha! Clever! I should have got that point by the title "To the New World" but somehow I missed. But at least I caught the "life-affirming" message that links to the idea of rebirth of the race. Nice.
@ricolowry Heh. Sure hope there are no sons of politicians or celebrity embryos in that batch. Otherwise those aliens are just gonna have some unremarkable zoo specimens.
Wow I pods get bigger and heavier in the future.

(perhaps another life-affirming symbolism?)
