Franky I think the implementation through HyperGrid sounds fine. I don't really see any specific reason to maintain SecondLife control/connections. When connecting to another grid (Hypergrid enabled) along with the user's name, do avatar attached items transfer also? Sorry about all the questions, I imagine I should find a forum somewhere.
Also, your recreation project is wonderful! One question about OpenSim. Naming conventions/user information. Is that retrieved from Linden servers? Is it optional?
Hi unnatural! No, sadly, at least until late 2010, avatar names and information are not "unified", ie. each grid operator runs their own set of login servers. I know what you're going to say: that means registering for the hundreds of OpenSim-based grids individually, one by one...
At least, there is one temporary solution. Thanks to a protocol called HyperGrid, all OpenSim logins can work on each other's grid (just not on Linden Lab's). Not all OpenSim-based grids are HyperGrid-enabled, but most are. This basically means you can set up your own grid, create an avatar there, and jump around the OpenSim grids with a single login. Think OpenID for OpenSim :) It works *almost* the same way. It's not perfect, of course, and it doesn't work for Linden Lab itself.
I really feel like OpenSim is paving the way for "cyberspace" like it was written about. Taking it from a proprietary controlled form to something anyone will be able to run. I'm so giddy, I just found out about all this!
It will ultimately depend on the Internet community response: the web did explode when its features where still miserable, if compared to todays' capabilities. Still at one point the critical mass was reached...and it did blow up.
I hope is gonna happen again. Nothing will be the same on the Internet then...
Great, we're finally there... I've been always persuaded that OpenSim will be the network that will interconnect virtual worlds the way the web is today.
That's my belief too, but only... in about 2010, it's still a bit early for that, but making steady progress!
I can imagine that Linden Lab's own internal 'alpha' testing in 2001 and 2002 was not much different to what OpenSim is able to do *today* in terms of stability. And OpenSim definitely has quite a lot of more features than SL had in 2001/2!
