@EarthaKit2 For what it's worth 1 month after your question, the angel is making a counting gesture, by pointing at his fingers like that. At the time it was a gesture used to indicate lecturing, teaching or giving a speech. Imagine someone saying "my first point is ..., my second point is ..., and my third point is ..." That's what it means. Saint Matthew is probably frowning because he is concentrating on what the angel is saying. :)
