steelo, help... ammonia 0 as i already told you but at the end of the day after full light cycle i have 8.8 ph.... any suggestion? and the water is not clear like million small parts are suspended in it... any idea?
@bortolettof Be patient, its a new system and these imbalances are normal. DO not add any buffers to the tank. Wait a few days and then test again and get back to me with your water parameters. Good luck.
Thanks so much for the info on all the 4 videos, im new to the hobby and interested in having corals and sttuff. i have already a bubble anemone, a polyp and a red mushroom coral and a clowfish.the filter that i use is a hang on the back, lots of live rock and a protein skimmer. my tank is 20 gallon
i do carbon and gfo change monthly, but what do you do for mg ca and alk, water change replenish these. do you dose since you haven't change you're water, what about nitrite level, beneficial bacteria can only do so much
@ldam I do rely on dosing the system since no water changes are performed, but my dosing mostly consists of a 2 part calcium and alkalinity supplement as mentioned in this video series. Nitrite levels are non existent in the tank since the initial cycle, and if what you meant is nitrates, nitrates are also non existent due to the deep sand bed and refugium below. The bacteria and life in the tank take care of everything for me. That's whats great about reefs. They are capable of this and more.
i went without a water test for six months, and i have only had my tank for almost a year now, thats because i never bought a test kit i used to get my aquarium store to test it for me, long story short, i was getting it tested every week when i started out, then something happened and i didnt go for 6 months and then i went once and got it tested and he said my nitrate was up a tad, i do weekly water changes because i dont have a skimmer, too expensive
so when you first setup your refugium how did you know were or how much or were to have your water level to start with to flow properly is the question! (correct water level in refugium is the topic) Sorry i think im being misunderstood!

@abreezeducttesting 77 - 79 degree is perfectly fine. This is about the same 2 degree swing as is found in nature. I keep mines between 76 and 78 degrees which is about the same swing in a 24 hour period. Good luck.
Steelo?? Im building a 205 gallon system 175 gallon one center overflow box display 30gallon refugium ?? what size pump return should I use. Thank-you
What tang is easy to care for and how many ?I love tangs and have a 100ga. so I can add them all together, because my naso tang died. He lasted 20 days but wasn't eating.
@abreezeducttesting The easiest Tang I ever kept was probably the Hippo Tang. Its the most docile and friendly of them all, but still a Tang, and highly susceptible to ich so be warned and good luck.

@abreezeducttesting Bingo :) Just as you stated, your testing back negative cause the algae is living off it. A nice healthy Tang and 3 or 4 Zebra Mexican Snails will do the job of the 100 you have there now and in a faster time :) SO long as you followed the instructions on the video, you should defeat the algae, but its gonna take time. Good luck.
Can you give me some advice on the algae problem? Just posted a new video. The live rock in Refugium was placed in main display tank two weeks ago, it was traping ditrus under rock at bottom. Testing nitrate under 10ppm, and no phosphate. Please post comment, thanks
@abreezeducttesting I will take a look later on tonight if not by tomorrow for sure once I get my video uploaded. I am having severe issues with the rendering of the video but will take a look for sure. In the mean time, you should already know that I have several videos that discuss how to deal with different nuisance algaes out there.
Hey steelo i have a clownfish with long white stringy feces, for what I have researched is a worm... Have you ever dealt with this? What is the best thing to do about it?
@Gatorfinheat Its an internal parasite that causes it. Not deadly but if you want to eradicate it, you will need to isolate the clownfish and feed it foods soaked in medication. I recommend you do an extensive research on this to find the best solution. Good luck.
I have watched almost all your videos and have learned in 3 hours what I have been looking for since I got my 29 gl biocube , 2 months ago.. Keep up the good work .
@nolj67 Yes. I have 2 videos reviewing this sump refugium where you can find the answers you seek, but I would also much rather recommend the Trigger Systems Sump Refugium which I am using now. The Trigger System is by far one of the best sump refugiums I have ever owned and played with, plus, the price tag is on the same range as the Aqueon. Hope this helps :)
Yes I tried different stores and not all my fish die, well my naso died 2 days ago. I posted before about it being stressed but then it wasn't eating. Chrome Damsels are the only ones that live. How wants a damsel only tank lol.. could you do a video on fish additions and care ?
@abreezeducttesting Chromis and Damsels are some of the most hardiest of marine fish and can even survive being exposed to Ammonia. Check to see if your damsels are not bullying the new additions to death. They are notorious for this and for this reason, I would completely remove them from the tank if I were you. I will add this to my to do list of videos. Good luck and hang in there.
@Franmac1921 Yes I did. I mention this in video 2 "daily tasks" not on this one which is "monthly to yearly tasks". i also cover calcium and alkalinity in detail on a video titled "Reef Aquarium Calcium & Alkalinity - How It Works" :)
@abreezeducttesting Yes, absolutely. I mean just visit some of my older videos when I first started the rebuild process of this tank and added the new Trigger System Sump 9 months ago. Then look at some of my most latest videos. The Chaeto started from a fist sized ball, to me having to prune it every 4 months or so with the massive size it has become today. The proof is in the pudding as they say :)
@ffffreddie161 I have read mixed reviews on the subject and so until I try them out myself, I cannot really comment there. Thanks for watching and for the comment :)
@THE89KiNGZ Please read some of the comments recently posted on my channel where I just recently answered this same question to a subscriber named "mattfetz".
@latinpapie The EV180 with mag drive 9.5 will be more than enough for this set up. I upgraded to the EV240 in the hopes of upgrading the tank to a larger system but have yet to come around to doing this so I now use the EV240 instead. Good luck.
Think you could give me your measurements that you used to order the exact same size? My tank is pretty tall and I do plan on buying a aqua c ev-180 lol like everyone else I want to be just like you lol
@latinpapie You can find the answers you seek on my video titled "Trigger Systems Custom Sump Refugium Review" where I talk about all the compartments dimensions and how the sump works. I recommend you watch all my videos before you post a question cause chances are, its already been answered lol. Keep in mind that the EV180 is smaller in size than my EV240 so your sump does not exactly have to be like mines. I recommend you get the skimmer first and then take it from there. Good luck.
Hi steelo. Love your videos. I live in the bx and I'm wanting to start a reef tank. I currently have a 90 gal long wich I want to convert. I don't have pre drilled holes in my tank. What size over flow box would I need. And how big would the return pump need to be from the sump to the tank as far as gph.
@ffffreddie161 For this sized tank, a hang on the back overflow box that can handle 10 times the total water volume would be sufficient for the setup of a reef. In other words 90g X 10 = at least 900 gallons per hour flow through rate. Good luck.
@latinpapie I am not 100% sure because it is a custom made 39 inch long sump, but if I had to take an educated guess, its anywhere between 30 to 35 gallons of water at any given time. It can hold a lot more if filed to the top but we all know sumps are never filled entirely to the top :)
@newyorksteelo ah ok! when you ordered yours how did you come about to ordering it? like measurements or what you thought would work best for you? i have a elos 120 and its a 90 gallon aquarium but it only has 1 overflow hose and not 2 like your sexy tank does! would i be able to order your sump with only 1 outlet into the sump instead of 2? oh also when your in need of donations please let us know i missed last time you were in need of money and i def want to help support you ilke you do to us!
@latinpapie I knew what skimmer I was going to use, how much space I needed in the sump, and how much of the sump I could fit on my reef stand. My stand is not your ordinary stand. It is a specialty stand with no center support and opened back to allow for a large sump. It is also 32 inches tall, unlike the standard 28 inch tall stands allowing me to add a tall skimmer. You can ask for one overflow or 2 and then split the drain into 2 if you'd like. No need for donation at this time. THANK YOU!
@abreezeducttesting Low oxygen levels in a reef will surely result in low PH values. In most cases, keeping the windows in your home opened to allow fresh air to enter your apartment is one of the biggest fix to low oxygen/PH issues. The higher the oxygen content, the better the PH will fair.
@abreezeducttesting I have not, and probably will not make one on ORP. Mostly because it is related to Ozone of which I have never used and probably will never use. Sorry about this buddy but I tend to make videos of subjects I have experimented with, not so much from subjects I have read about :)
awesome man, i really hop u dont put any corals under torture with that LED light. definately not good for a reef... would be interesting to see though..
@siloex Oh how right you may be about that. I have lots to share since I installed the fixture so stay tuned, By the way, I hope your reef is doing well. It's been a while since we've seen an update from you. Looking forward to one.
@Blade0047 If this is a new setup, some micro bubbles are expected until the equipment breaks in and develops the slime coat. Once the filter breaks in, you will see less and less micro bubbles. The upgrade is a great idea and you can find this information on some of my older videos where I set up a 30g tank with one of the best filtration possible for this size system. Visit some of my older videos to find the answers you seek. i recommend you watch them all if you are a beginner. Good luck.
little question.. im about to purchase an HOB overflow and was wondering what would be a good gph for my 30g running a 10g sump refugium? would really appreciate your expert opinion! :)
@newyorksteelo i was thinking of going with a 600 rated gph overflow and adding a flow valve to the return just incase it may be too much but should be okay with the bigger OFB
No deaths but the naso tang is stressed. I was thinking I was laking water flow to the Refugium, that's why I gave more flow, the tank has a small bio load and its had low nitrates. The ozone hasnt been on because the ORP has stayed right around 400. Can it be just to clean water ie.ORP 400 and low nitrates for the die off of macro?
@abreezeducttesting The above mentioned is not a reason for the macro alga to die nor for the water to get cloudy. If the ORP dropped drastically, this means the levels of oxygen in the tank are low and could case the troubles mentioned. I cannot possibly pin point the issue without knowing the history of your tank within the last few weeks, in example changes done recently. Can't say for sure if it is the Ozone either, but Ozone is dangerous to even us humans and may have been the cause.
My chaetomorpha died off and my tank is clouded, I tested water everything is at o and nitrate or at 15ppm. Do ya have an idea of what's wrong? I opened my pump to flow more water though my Refugium and my ORP went way down dropped 400 to 315? Thanks.....
@abreezeducttesting Ouch, I cannot say for sure since this is your setup and you know it better than anyone else, but based on your description of the ORP dropping drastically and the fact that you use Ozone on your tank could be the culprit, but then again, there are so many reasons for something like this to happen it's really hard to pin point it. Did any of the animals die recently?
I made a video of my custom 30 gallon acrylic sump! It has a mag 7 & it's gonna be used on my 75 with a HOB overflow box! Please check it out & give me your opinion it's a short video
mr steelo, I see that u have a Flame Angel in ur reef tank. Do u think that it's not going to nip on the corals? or are u willing to take a chance and see if it doesn't?
In Regards to: How To Reef Aquarium Maintenance Part 4 - Monthly To Yearly Tasks.
Jay, how right you are in this video on calcium build-up & maintenance. I too am noticing my mag drive 750 has been making more noise than usual these days. As you know, it's been 8 months for me now & I saw this coming. Good advice for the chiller as well. I'm going to remove it from my sump and run it in a 5 gal bucket with the supply & return lines in the bucket until it's clean. Right on in ur advice bro!
@cominatyalive Sounds like a plan and is exactly what needs to be done every 6 months. If you let the pumps run longer, you risk damaging the impeller and then having to replace it. Thanks for the comment and for watching. Keep up the good work.
Hey newyorksteelo, I have watched most of your videos, and they have greatly inspired me to become so involved in this hobby. I was wondering if you could take a look at my video. It is my first video and it was deeply inspired by you. Thanks.
Hi ur welcome . By the way I love all ur videos . I just bought 28g nano Cube and still not set up the tank yet cos I dont know what do I need since m new to this . Could u please give me some idea ?
@Rosanorm1 All the information you need is found on my videos. I recommend you sit back on a weekend, and watch them all. You will walk away a more advanced hobbyist with more understanding on how everything works. Good luck and be sure to keep me posted on your progress.
@Springs24 I cannot possibly offer advice on chambers without being present buddy. If I give you a certain dimension for example, and it does not fit lol, you are going to be mad lol. This falls on you buddy and you will have to measure closely inside the stand, taking into consideration if your stand can allow you to fit in the sump whether through the front, or back and so on. The only thing I can recommend is that the bigger it is, the better and more water volume it will hold :)
@Springs24 I absolutely did need it and could of used more space. You can find this information and why on my videos on aquascaping and the rebuild process of the 90g system. Could not have done it without the 17" space in the first stage. Just look where the mag drive 18 is, the live rock, the drains for the sump, it had to be done.
I agree too... even if the skimmer isn't pulling as much out as before using it, it's better to have it running 100% of the time than not running enough. Thanks Steelo, appreciate the reply.
Miracle mud claims that there is no need for a protein skimmer which I'm a little skeptical about. I was however, thinking of putting it on a timer and running it for around 4-6 hours a day instead of 24/7. I couldn't really pull up any info on the internet about it and would appreciate your advice on what you do. Thanks!
@atlanticstar2012 I agree with you here that a skimmer is a must, but do not agree it should be ran for a few hours only. I think skimmers should run 24/7 as they were intended to do so, and this I clearly address on my older videos. Initially, I took this same approach of running it a few hours a day in the hopes of experimentation only, but have found that 24/7 is always best. In the end, all skimmers are limited in how much they can do at any given time, and always do more good than harm.
Dude, just wanted to say thanks for all the awesome vids you've been putting out. I just set up a fuge using miracle mud and your videos about it were most helpful.
@mbowler05 My reef Keeper Elite does the job for me. The system can survive months without feeding because of all the life in the deep sand bed and live rock, and my 20g top off container has enough water to top off the system for a month :)
@applektech I rarely ever go to reef central but do have an account there. Just haven't used it in a long time though. About the LED's, I am only doing it for experimentation purposes. I have read and seen so many systems crash after upgrading to LED's that I am going to upgrade myself and see for myself the positive and or negative effects of them altogether. If something goes wrong, can't blame the system since its been flourishing for almost a year with metal halides. Stay tuned :)
@TWhite2345 NO! The vinegar is safe to use to clean the equipment out side of your setup and must be rinsed thoroughly afterwards before introducing the equipment back into your tank. Do not directly add vinegar to your tank or all hell would break lose in the system. Good luck.
Watching your deep sand bed videos again....their informative but I was wondering as a seeded sandbed removes nitrates and as they drop does this effect the bacteria within the sandbed?
@abreezeducttesting No effect, other than the less the nitrates, the less the bacteria living within it. If there is a nitrate spike, more will rapidly multiply and consume the nitrates almost instantaneously.
I have ORP probe, as you know when you add buffers or cal. Or water changes it lowers your ORP ...I watch my drop from 375 to 280 some times. Thanks for the tip because I will be careful when I get corals.
@abreezeducttesting Yes, and may lead to the death of corals and live stock. My reefkeeper controller has the option of installing an ORP probe, but I do not use, nor have one. Not needed, unless I am using Ozone as part of my setup.
@RubenyGenesis10 I began adding corals almost immediately after the cycle process, but this was because I am a bit more experienced in the chemistry of sea water, already had the corals in another mature 30g nano setup, and also because this tank reached stability fast due to the use of live rock, live sand, refugium setup, and over all equipment used.
hi NYSTEELO just a folow up from my previous question how much mineral mud would i need for my sump refugium i also have a 90 gallon system including the sump
@reefdon I do not use Mineral Mud buddy and do not recommend it either. I recommend Miracle Mud which is a totally different product. 1 to 2 inches of depth is all you need for this substrate to work effectively as a supplement for your reef. Good luck.
@zacguitarshreder12 I shall soon find out if they are worth it or not. Cant say the same about the Marineland one though. Stay tuned for my review on it to see where I am coming from. Thanks.
Another great vid ny think ill try some of that elite. Any tips for those of us that just use tap water with declorinator to make it the best u can make with tap water. Thank you Newyork for sharing your knowledge with us. U The Man
@4thGloryMonday The best advice I can offer is to use Distilled water in the absence of an RO/DI filter. Only other thing to do is use a dechlorinator with your tap water which you mentioned you already use. Good luck and thanks for the comment and feedback :)

@steogorman Carbon is a form of chemical filtration that continuously polishes the water removing odors, heavy metals, discoloration etc etc.

Gatorfinheat 4 months ago
@Gatorfinheat Its an internal parasite that causes it. Not deadly but if you want to eradicate it, you will need to isolate the clownfish and feed it foods soaked in medication. I recommend you do an extensive research on this to find the best solution. Good luck.

I was thinking of purchasing the Aqueon ProFlex Modular Sump Filtration Systems and was wondering would you recommend it?
nolj67 4 months ago
@nolj67 Yes. I have 2 videos reviewing this sump refugium where you can find the answers you seek, but I would also much rather recommend the Trigger Systems Sump Refugium which I am using now. The Trigger System is by far one of the best sump refugiums I have ever owned and played with, plus, the price tag is on the same range as the Aqueon. Hope this helps :)

Steelo,
Thanks... with adding a fish a lot to remember accumation, to much fish all at once, eat habits ect. Can't wait for the videos.
abreezeducttesting 4 months ago
Steelo,
Yes I tried different stores and not all my fish die, well my naso died 2 days ago. I posted before about it being stressed but then it wasn't eating. Chrome Damsels are the only ones that live. How wants a damsel only tank lol.. could you do a video on fish additions and care ?
abreezeducttesting 4 months ago
@abreezeducttesting Chromis and Damsels are some of the most hardiest of marine fish and can even survive being exposed to Ammonia. Check to see if your damsels are not bullying the new additions to death. They are notorious for this and for this reason, I would completely remove them from the tank if I were you. I will add this to my to do list of videos. Good luck and hang in there.
newyorksteelo 4 months ago
Thanks Steelo,
Do you have any videos on adding fish correctly? I don't know why sometimes my fish die after 1 day or 3 weeks. It could be lots of this going on.

Does your macro algae grow with the maco-gro light with 25 watt 6400k?
abreezeducttesting 4 months ago
@abreezeducttesting Yes, absolutely. I mean just visit some of my older videos when I first started the rebuild process of this tank and added the new Trigger System Sump 9 months ago. Then look at some of my most latest videos. The Chaeto started from a fist sized ball, to me having to prune it every 4 months or so with the massive size it has become today. The proof is in the pudding as they say :)

Would you recommend a Ev-240 on a 90 gallon system? What are the perks to that?
latinpapie 4 months ago
@latinpapie The EV180 with mag drive 9.5 will be more than enough for this set up. I upgraded to the EV240 in the hopes of upgrading the tank to a larger system but have yet to come around to doing this so I now use the EV240 instead. Good luck.

Think you could give me your measurements that you used to order the exact same size? My tank is pretty tall and I do plan on buying a aqua c ev-180 lol like everyone else I want to be just like you lol
latinpapie 4 months ago
@latinpapie You can find the answers you seek on my video titled "Trigger Systems Custom Sump Refugium Review" where I talk about all the compartments dimensions and how the sump works. I recommend you watch all my videos before you post a question cause chances are, its already been answered lol. Keep in mind that the EV180 is smaller in size than my EV240 so your sump does not exactly have to be like mines. I recommend you get the skimmer first and then take it from there. Good luck.
newyorksteelo 4 months ago
Hi steelo. Love your videos. I live in the bx and I'm wanting to start a reef tank. I currently have a 90 gal long wich I want to convert. I don't have pre drilled holes in my tank. What size over flow box would I need. And how big would the return pump need to be from the sump to the tank as far as gph.
ffffreddie161 4 months ago
@ffffreddie161 For this sized tank, a hang on the back overflow box that can handle 10 times the total water volume would be sufficient for the setup of a reef. In other words 90g X 10 = at least 900 gallons per hour flow through rate. Good luck.
newyorksteelo 4 months ago
How many gallons is your sump Steelo?
latinpapie 4 months ago
@latinpapie I am not 100% sure because it is a custom made 39 inch long sump, but if I had to take an educated guess, its anywhere between 30 to 35 gallons of water at any given time. It can hold a lot more if filed to the top but we all know sumps are never filled entirely to the top :)
newyorksteelo 4 months ago
@newyorksteelo ah ok! when you ordered yours how did you come about to ordering it? like measurements or what you thought would work best for you? i have a elos 120 and its a 90 gallon aquarium but it only has 1 overflow hose and not 2 like your sexy tank does! would i be able to order your sump with only 1 outlet into the sump instead of 2? oh also when your in need of donations please let us know i missed last time you were in need of money and i def want to help support you ilke you do to us!
latinpapie 4 months ago
@latinpapie I knew what skimmer I was going to use, how much space I needed in the sump, and how much of the sump I could fit on my reef stand. My stand is not your ordinary stand. It is a specialty stand with no center support and opened back to allow for a large sump. It is also 32 inches tall, unlike the standard 28 inch tall stands allowing me to add a tall skimmer. You can ask for one overflow or 2 and then split the drain into 2 if you'd like. No need for donation at this time. THANK YOU!

In reefs do we have to monitor Co2?
abreezeducttesting 4 months ago
@abreezeducttesting Not unless Ozone is used.
newyorksteelo 4 months ago
Steelo,
Does high oxygen levels in a reef raise or lower PH, co2? I haven't found this answer.thanks....
abreezeducttesting 4 months ago
@abreezeducttesting Low oxygen levels in a reef will surely result in low PH values. In most cases, keeping the windows in your home opened to allow fresh air to enter your apartment is one of the biggest fix to low oxygen/PH issues. The higher the oxygen content, the better the PH will fair.
newyorksteelo 4 months ago
Steelo,
Have you put out a video on ORP? I was interested in a controller and you mentioned it. Thanks...
abreezeducttesting 4 months ago
@abreezeducttesting I have not, and probably will not make one on ORP. Mostly because it is related to Ozone of which I have never used and probably will never use. Sorry about this buddy but I tend to make videos of subjects I have experimented with, not so much from subjects I have read about :)

Blade0047 5 months ago

Almostazn12 5 months ago
@Almostazn12 I would put a mag drive 3 if you can fit it in the small 10g sump below. Good luck.
newyorksteelo 5 months ago
@newyorksteelo Thanks Steelo! keep the videos coming! :D
Almostazn12 5 months ago
@Almostazn12 Your welcome. Make sure your overflow box can handle the 300gph flow too.
newyorksteelo 5 months ago
@newyorksteelo i was thinking of going with a 600 rated gph overflow and adding a flow valve to the return just incase it may be too much but should be okay with the bigger OFB
Almostazn12 5 months ago
@Almostazn12 Doing this will cause severe stress on the pump, and consume more electricity than needed, so I would not go this route. Good luck.
newyorksteelo 5 months ago
@newyorksteelo thats why you are my guru! thanks again steelo! ill do more research for the overflow suitable for the tank
Almostazn12 5 months ago
Thanks Steelo,
No deaths but the naso tang is stressed. I was thinking I was laking water flow to the Refugium, that's why I gave more flow, the tank has a small bio load and its had low nitrates. The ozone hasnt been on because the ORP has stayed right around 400. Can it be just to clean water ie.ORP 400 and low nitrates for the die off of macro?
abreezeducttesting 5 months ago
@abreezeducttesting The above mentioned is not a reason for the macro alga to die nor for the water to get cloudy. If the ORP dropped drastically, this means the levels of oxygen in the tank are low and could case the troubles mentioned. I cannot possibly pin point the issue without knowing the history of your tank within the last few weeks, in example changes done recently. Can't say for sure if it is the Ozone either, but Ozone is dangerous to even us humans and may have been the cause.
newyorksteelo 5 months ago
Steelo,
My chaetomorpha died off and my tank is clouded, I tested water everything is at o and nitrate or at 15ppm. Do ya have an idea of what's wrong? I opened my pump to flow more water though my Refugium and my ORP went way down dropped 400 to 315? Thanks.....
abreezeducttesting 5 months ago
@abreezeducttesting Ouch, I cannot say for sure since this is your setup and you know it better than anyone else, but based on your description of the ORP dropping drastically and the fact that you use Ozone on your tank could be the culprit, but then again, there are so many reasons for something like this to happen it's really hard to pin point it. Did any of the animals die recently?

Jay, how right you are in this video on calcium build-up & maintenance. I too am noticing my mag drive 750 has been making more noise than usual these days. As you know, it's been 8 months for me now & I saw this coming. Good advice for the chiller as well. I have 40" length x 17" width x 32" height. Would you mind giving me ur advice on stage dimensions assuming I have a EV240 with mag18?
I can have them mount the bulkheads-socks like urs or like the proflex? What do u recommend?
Thanks!
Springs24 5 months ago
@Springs24 I cannot possibly offer advice on chambers without being present buddy. If I give you a certain dimension for example, and it does not fit lol, you are going to be mad lol. This falls on you buddy and you will have to measure closely inside the stand, taking into consideration if your stand can allow you to fit in the sump whether through the front, or back and so on. The only thing I can recommend is that the bigger it is, the better and more water volume it will hold :)
newyorksteelo 5 months ago
The way u have the ev240 it looks like u didn't need 17" in ur TS 1st stage? I'm sending my final dimensions to TS.
Springs24 5 months ago
@Springs24 I absolutely did need it and could of used more space. You can find this information and why on my videos on aquascaping and the rebuild process of the 90g system. Could not have done it without the 17" space in the first stage. Just look where the mag drive 18 is, the live rock, the drains for the sump, it had to be done.
newyorksteelo 5 months ago
I agree too... even if the skimmer isn't pulling as much out as before using it, it's better to have it running 100% of the time than not running enough. Thanks Steelo, appreciate the reply.
atlanticstar2012 5 months ago
@atlanticstar2012 No problem. Your welcome!
newyorksteelo 5 months ago
Miracle mud claims that there is no need for a protein skimmer which I'm a little skeptical about. I was however, thinking of putting it on a timer and running it for around 4-6 hours a day instead of 24/7. I couldn't really pull up any info on the internet about it and would appreciate your advice on what you do. Thanks!
atlanticstar2012 5 months ago
@atlanticstar2012 I agree with you here that a skimmer is a must, but do not agree it should be ran for a few hours only. I think skimmers should run 24/7 as they were intended to do so, and this I clearly address on my older videos. Initially, I took this same approach of running it a few hours a day in the hopes of experimentation only, but have found that 24/7 is always best. In the end, all skimmers are limited in how much they can do at any given time, and always do more good than harm.

Hey Steelo i'm happy to see your taking the plunge and getting some solid LEDs...on another note, are you ever on Reef Central?
applektech 5 months ago
@applektech I rarely ever go to reef central but do have an account there. Just haven't used it in a long time though. About the LED's, I am only doing it for experimentation purposes. I have read and seen so many systems crash after upgrading to LED's that I am going to upgrade myself and see for myself the positive and or negative effects of them altogether. If something goes wrong, can't blame the system since its been flourishing for almost a year with metal halides. Stay tuned :)
newyorksteelo 5 months ago
Would you be able to put a super small amount of vinegar in the aquarium to clean the algaeq
TWhite2345 5 months ago
@TWhite2345 NO! The vinegar is safe to use to clean the equipment out side of your setup and must be rinsed thoroughly afterwards before introducing the equipment back into your tank. Do not directly add vinegar to your tank or all hell would break lose in the system. Good luck.

Steelo,
Watching your deep sand bed videos again....their informative but I was wondering as a seeded sandbed removes nitrates and as they drop does this effect the bacteria within the sandbed?
abreezeducttesting 5 months ago
@abreezeducttesting No effect, other than the less the nitrates, the less the bacteria living within it. If there is a nitrate spike, more will rapidly multiply and consume the nitrates almost instantaneously.
newyorksteelo 5 months ago
Steelo,
I have ORP probe, as you know when you add buffers or cal. Or water changes it lowers your ORP ...I watch my drop from 375 to 280 some times. Thanks for the tip because I will be careful when I get corals.

@abreezeducttesting Good luck!
newyorksteelo 5 months ago
Steelo,
Does sudden drops in ORP effect fish or corals? I noticed in one of your videos you had an ORP probe on your controller...thanks
abreezeducttesting 5 months ago
@abreezeducttesting Yes, and may lead to the death of corals and live stock. My reefkeeper controller has the option of installing an ORP probe, but I do not use, nor have one. Not needed, unless I am using Ozone as part of my setup.
newyorksteelo 5 months ago
how long did you wait after you set up your tank to start adding corals and invertebrates??
RubenyGenesis10 5 months ago
@RubenyGenesis10 I began adding corals almost immediately after the cycle process, but this was because I am a bit more experienced in the chemistry of sea water, already had the corals in another mature 30g nano setup, and also because this tank reached stability fast due to the use of live rock, live sand, refugium setup, and over all equipment used.
