  • Privalova ..the last white sprinter legend.... love her

  • Still to this day I believe Merlene won, also she is still competing this very evening. Anybody who says Devers was the better competitor has lost their marbles. Loved it when Merlene then came out and won the 200 meters beating Gwen Torrence who refused to be interviewed. Merlene Ottey a true legend.

  • Maybe it's true about African athletes being dominant over European athletes overall. I would have to say it is probably true. Look at Flo Jo, Evelyn Ashford, Merlene Ottey, Kip Keino, john Carlos, Jimmy Hines, Micheal Johnson and Jesse Owens come on man!!!!!! These are the best the world has every known. Only a handful of European (white) athletes have come out on top like: John Walker, Steve Ovett, SebCoe, Jim Ryun, Valery Borzov, Mary Decker Slaney and many German athletes as well.

  • Ottey won,a similar thing occurred in 07 with VCB, lwIlliams, Vcb won, so Ottey won here. It's torso first. By the way don't talk crap About Ottey using drugs, if you know track you would notice that Ottey was one if not the most consistent female sprinters in terms of times in both 1 and 2, just like how Asafa times are consistent. Not like some who only ran fast in final. Even after the drug allegation her times never faltered, she ran at Olympics in her 40s

  • YOU WON THAT MERLENE ;) , IT'S ALL GOOD

  • @404OrioExcept she didn't win.

  • Irina Privalova was always great in the first 50m. Too bad she couldn't maintain that speed until the end of her races. She was always a 2-4 finisher, usually getting passed in the last 20m or so. But still, I like her looong strides and she never quit on a race.

  • Sister Merlene Ottey!... Beautiful, Strong and a true representation of TALENT, RESILIENCE and her aura, reminiscent of MIGHTY AFRIKAN QUEENS FROM THE ANCIENT!.....

All hail the Queen! ((IYE!!)) MERLENE OTTEY!!!

  • Ottey may have got the charges dismissed on techicalities- but she is not clean and never was, and after the fact the IAAF and CAS realized their mistake, but they had already ruled... thus WADDA was formed... she is dirty

  • at :21, Ottey kicked into a higher gear and started flying. If only she had another half meter...

  • At :21 Gwen Torrence briefly had the lead. Had Ottey had a better start she may have won. I know, it's all in the past. Just an observation.

  • :46 - :50... Gail Deavers....Wow.

  • Toward the end of last year(2008) there

was a program on TV which it was based

on many of those women from Germany

that you're praising as "goddes", who were

on different kinds of drugs. Many who were given the drugs by their on trainers without their knowledge. The whole thing blew up when females started complaining about an unusual enlargement of their clitoris. I'm not making this up. So there go, aquamarineeyes, your "wet dreams goddes"--all drugged up!

  • Ottey was a clear winner...

  • Aaronlondon u talk outta ur ass Ottey is not more celebrated than Devers in any way. Devers won a lot more medals & we won't even get on to talk about the time Katrine Krabbe smashed Ottey into the ground by superior sprinting!

  • Actually Ottey holds the record for most World Championship medals as well as most Olympic track medals by a female athlete and I would think that, yes, she is more celebrated than Devers especially in Europe which is the home of track and field. Need I remind you also of the fact that Krabbe was a drug cheat

  • Merlene got that ruling overturned because her sample at the lab in Lucerne hadn't been handled properly and so was able to compete in 2000. Merlene was well able to hold her own against those East German "Women" who are now probably either crippled or ill due to the chemicals and steroids they were ingesting. Don't know where you got your info but here are Otteys head to heads against them - vs Koch 0-7, vs Silke Gladisch Möller 5-4, vs Heike Daute Drechsler 6-4 and vs Krabbe 10-2.

  • How many Gold Medals did Ottey acheive against the German Uber women of Koch, Gladische, Dreschler & Krabbe when it really mattered then? PMSL!!!

  • A scientist who handled the 1999 drug test for Jamacian sprinter Merlene Ottey says a mistake was made clearing the runner of a positive test.

"The sample shouldn't have been corrected at all",said Christaine Ayotte, the head of the lab in Montreal where the testing was carried out.

"And when they did, they used the wrong formula. It was a very stupid mistake. They turned it upside down. The problem is that no one from the IAAF side was able to correct this formula during Arbitration.....

  • @yescanto SO WHAT ?? THEY LET THOSE E. GERMANS GO ALL THOSE YEARS , BESIDES MERLENE STILL RAN FAST @ 40 & MADE THE '00 FINALS , YOU GO MERLENE

  • @404Orion Merelne never ran fast without the help of drugs !!

  • (continued) Late the arbitrators wrote they were misled by the Ottey expert, but then it was too late."

Article on the net; Fight Against Doping:Marion Jones Sentencing, Austrian Appeal,Merlene Ottey ..Oct 1, 2008.

There is no anti-doping organization in Jamacia, parliment is trying to create a national doping agency, and are pushing througth legislation which will enact the WADDA code and the UNESCO treaty on doping. Slovenia has no doping control at all, steriods are legal in Europe.

  • Ottey and her fans are just bitter she is the perennial pretender but not champion. She was always a contender but in big races she would be denied over and over by the superior champions from Germany, U.S, and Perec . Basically from 84-96 Koch, Gohr, Brisco Hookes, Flo Jo, Ashford, Dreschler, Gladish, Krabbe, Torrence, Devers, and Perec all took turns dominating her when it really mattered and beating her for the biggest titles. That is why they are champions and she is just a sour pretender.

  • Many of those women would be in their "other" event, not even their main event and still deny her the elusive golds she never won. The 200 metre dash was Perec's 3rd event by 96. The 400 metre was of course her best, 400 hurdles was even more a priority than the 200 metres by then. Still in her 3rd event she won yet another gold and denied poor Ottey her elusive Oly gold in her own favorite event. That is since Perec and others are winners and Ottey is not.

  • Devers is another example. The hurdles was her main event, where she was more dominant. That didnt stop her from denying Ottey her elusive major championship at 100 metres in 1993 and 1996 in photo finishes both times, and of course in 92 where she won and Ottey was a mere 5th. Not her main event, just a secondary event for her, no matter, still able to stop Ottey from her elusive goals in one of her main events.

  • As for steroids I dont even really care since most sprinters are on them anyway. If so and so was who cares, Ottey was doped up to the eyeballs as much as any of them and they still whooped her behind when it really mattered, winning gold medals in big races. Poor women is out there running at almost 50 in a sport she has done nothing more than be the sour almost women who time and time again almost but not quite became a real champion.

  • All those others I mentioned who have the big golds she never won now are raising families, have careers, enjoying life, she is changing countries and running slower and slower as she approaches grandma ages with no other life, nothing to do, just continue at something she failed to become a real champion at. Sad state for Merelene Ottey.

  • I'm an American and my loyalty lies with the Ashfords, Flojos, Torrences, Devers and Jones. But because Ottey didn't win many championships, shouldn't negate her greatness. She was around and competing well through the runs of all of the greats that I just mentioned. She clearly had a love for the sport. the fact that she competed for so long and was still at the top HAS to account for something. No?

  • I didn't make a judgement on this race. I was responding to someone who basically was making a joke out of Ottey's long career. But, I don't know how the officials could have been "biased" towards anyone. Why would they be more so for Devers and not Ottey? And to say that Ottey "clearly" won, is more than a bit of a stretch. No one CLEARLY won this race. Hence, the controversy 16 years later.

  • Ok, she didn't "clearly" win, but you get what I'm saying. And yes, officials have been biased in the past. Does it really surprise you that American influence permeates into the world of Track and field? It's not that hard to imagine.

  • Where was that American influence when Privalova nipped Devers for the 4x100 at this same championship? Or how about when Gwen Torrence stepped on the line and lost the gold in the 200 in 95? There's no bias. It was just a close race. Ottey lost.

  • There's ALWAYS bias when it comes to human subjectivity, with the most powerful and influential coming out on top. Few instances of the contrary doesn't disprove or erode this fact. If u don't know that, then you're definitely not as smart as I initially thought.

  • You use ONE example of an American getting the better outcome as proof that there was a clear bias shone . You ask 12 people who viewed the race what they saw and I can guarantee that you won't get a concensus. It's just the way it is sometimes. Did Ottey get to the tape first? It didn't look that way to me.

And I'm gonna ask that you chill with even the hint of questioning my intelligence. That's a slippery slope to something, I think, neither of us logged onto this site for.

  • don't hate !!! you must not be a Jamaican

  • @quirotmutolafan NONESENSE!! She is evidence that the AFRIKAN GENE is indeed very unique and mighty! What part of that eludes your SAD MIND!

  • Gail devers won !! stop hating.. show won by her left shoulder...

  • jamaica jamaica we ave always been consistence in the sprint worlds, olympic, penns relay... and the list go's on

  • oonu too blood clawt bad mind. Oonu clearly see seh a Merlene Ottey win. Oonu cant tek di fact seh a Jamaican mash oonu up pon di track? Fire bun fi di whole o' oonu. Big ups to Merlene Ottey. Mi seh dat... zeen!

  • Actually this is nothing to do with sympathy thanks. Even the commentator virtually says that Ottey won. In my opinion the photo evidence shows that Ottey's torso crossed the line first.

  • well in ireland i watched it on bbc and they said ottey won

  • Devers won so get over it. People love to see Ottey as a victim and feel sorry for her. She makes her own bed and doesn't need your sympathy. She was beaten by the better athlete, its that simple. Now move on!!!

  • That photo pic is from ONE angle and it may favour Ottey more cus she's the closest to us. And the commentator said it 'LOOKS' like not that she won. Plus that's commentary from ONE nation. When I watched this back in UK with different commentary. The commentator said it was Devers. Plus the sports officials which are made up of professionals from all nations gave it to Devers. And they know they're job better than anyone. So who are we to argue with that?

  • Gail Devers is and was NOT a better athlete than Ottey ever! Devers may have been lucky to perform adequately at major championships, but Ottey has been much more celebrated, won many more accolades, and medals and has had far more achievements than Devers has had.

  • not true.. gail is the best

  • Devers won

  • You must have cataracts.

  • Merlene Ottey won that race. If today's rules were used, Ottey wouldve won...and she did.

  • stop hating.. devers won.. and she is still running... she was the fastest in the 60m hurdles in 2007.. that was amazing..

  • Gail Devers.. No Doubt.. And she went to my highschool.. Hah..

  • they have jinx devers so she cannot get any olympic 100h medal

  • Gail Devers all the way baby! Not only possibly the best combination sprinter/hurdler in track and field history but a great person as well. Congrats and blessings to Gail.. came back at 40, less than a year after having a child and blew away a world class field in the 60m hurdles in February at the Millrose Games!

  • Ottey ran 11.34s last year. I hope she improves to 11.22s this year. Better still, to further improve to make it to the Beijing Olympics next year.

  • Will Ottey be able to run 11.22s this year at the World Champ? This is my bet, reaching the semis.

  • Is she competeing though?

  • Devers won. Ottey was close though

  • From what I can see, Devers just barely dipped ahead of Ottey but I think Ottey is the better athlete.

  • ottey won cheat americans
