It's been something like 18 years since this came out and about 16 years since his death. All these years I never gave much thought to seeing this film and River Phoenix's talent.
What an amazing scene. It has to be ranked as one of the most heartfelt declarations of love, of longing ever put on film. Late, but I have to admit now, the world lost a very fine actor! Now I have to see the entire film and River Phoenix's other films. Thank you for this clip.

many gay storyline movies that I have seen, are always so sad at the end, either they separated or one of them would die from another. However I love these plots that are really close to my reality.
i cryed at the very end of this film...i almost cried when Scott left Mike in italy, but i held myself together...but at the end, at Bob's funeral when they meet glances and Mike smiles...i was a wreck lol x

This scene is beyond words. This desperation for love, the loneliness, the sense of rejection, the vulnerability....it's just heart-breaking. I really miss River.
I think this is such a great scene - it speaks beyond gender and sexuality and all those labels and just hits anyone who's ever felt unrequited love. It's so intense and honest.
I really miss River Phoenix. He was such an amazing actor - you can actually FEEL his yearning for Scott. That's powerful stuff right there.
Whether or not they kiss doesn't matter, I think. I think what mattered to Mike was that he finally got to admit to Scott that he loved him and that's the beauty of it. If he had kissed him, that would have been great. But I think that there's more to this scene; there's more sincerity and honesty to it than any lust or whatever. This is my favorite movie of all time. RIP River. It wouldn't have been the same film without him, y'know?

Stop hating! Brokeback Mountain is a masterpiece film (wether you find it appealing to you or not), it has a great message and a very touching love story.

Oh, no! I don't hate Brokeback Mountain. Even if it's not one of my favorite movies, I found the actors really convincing and touching with their roles. Especially Mr. Ledger.
What bothers me is that most people give more importance to the fact that those in love were of the same sex, rather than appreciating it as a love story. I don't think it would be as mentioned had the protagonists been of opposite sex.

To me this five minute campfire scene was more touching than the two hr long brokeback mountain..So much hurt, so much pain and we as an audience feel it along with River..Its so terrible that such a prized talent was snatched away from us so early on..River no doubt deserved an oscar nomination for this one.He did win the best actor nod at the venice film festival.

THIS is what acting is, at least to me. I felt like I was spying on a real life situation- I didn't feel like I was watching someone act. I felt as if I was eavesdropping. And this gives so much depth into his character- Look at them- in the middle of no where with a bike that barely works-Reeve's character has nothing- but he still gives his heart to him because of true love- just excellent!

gus van sant has stated in articals and on the commentary for the dvd that he gave them a chance to perform a kiss, he just let the camera run and they decided to howl at the moon. the scene was added to the dvd's deleted scenes. you can view it here, titled 'deleted scene- campfire'.
I think in the original script Mike went over to Scott and they had sex (if I interpreted it correctly; the script can be found and downloaded on the net). Now after the rework, it's more about love, and just love for and by another human being, down to the basics, regardless of gender, nothing more, nothing less. River was so talented at such a young age! I can never get over the film, the heart wrenching feeling will forever remain with me. This film changed my life.
I first watched this film about 15 years ago and it has become my all time no. 1 favorite film ever since. Every time I watch it breaks my heart all over again. River Phoenix's performance is absolutely matchless. He reworked the script for this famous campfire scene with the permission of Gus van Sant and thus putting into his character (Mike Waters) so much more depth and humanity.
I love the way River talks..there's just something about his soft, soothing voice. And Keanu is just gorgeous! I feel like crying whenever I watch this on DVD...
this is one of the sweetest, heartwrenching scenes ever in a movie. To me My Own Private Idaho was never really a gay movie like I felt Brokeback Mountain was but really just a movie about unrequited love that everyone can relate to.
I find that all very confusing. I mean, he said that his brother lived in Idaho, but nothing indicates that Richard is his brother. When Richard starts yelling at Mike, Mike even says "Dad!" to him. I read some review somewhere that says he that Mike is the product of an incestuos relationship between his mother and his brother, but fuck that, I don't believe that.
How I interpreted the thing the first time I watched it was that Richard was his father, but not his actual father, since his real father was 'that cowboy fuck'. I don't even think that he thought Richard was his brother, the only indication of that is that he says his brother lives in Idaho. Richard also refers to a conversation he had with Sharon, where he called her by her first name. That at least implies that he wasn't Sharon's son.
River was a phenomenal actor, and so beautiful, it really saddens me that we did not have a chance to see him reach his full potential. His brother is really a gifted actor as well
Keanu and River weren't a couple they were just really gud friends is all and they worked together a few times, Keanu even did a movie with Joaquin Phoenix. Love River still ;)

I think this is such a great scene - it speaks beyond gender and sexuality and all those labels and just hits anyone who's ever felt unrequited love. It's so intense and honest.
I really miss River Phoenix. He was such an amazing actor - you can actually FEEL his yearning for Scott. That's powerful stuff right there.

Whether or not they kiss doesn't matter, I think. I think what mattered to Mike was that he finally got to admit to Scott that he loved him and that's the beauty of it. If he had kissed him, that would have been great. But I think that there's more to this scene; there's more sincerity and honesty to it than any lust or whatever. This is my favorite movie of all time. RIP River. It wouldn't have been the same film without him, y'know?

Such a simple but powerful and emotional scene from one of my all time favourite films. River Phoenix was a genius and he never seemed to act; he was! The chemistry they both have in this film is beautiful.

i cant stand it. Not seen this film in ages but this scene still gives me shivers. I feel like i shouldnt be there watching it you know? probably one of the most beautiful scenes ever committed to celluloid. And i read that River Phoenix wrote the whole thing! To write that stuff and be so perfect in it? im so, so very sad he's gone. he would have done incredible things. it wasnt fair what happened to him. its even less fair how things as great as this performance are overshadowed by it. RIP.

I adored this film when i was in my teens aswell.Infact im sure i still have it on video somewhere.Both keanu & river were excellent in this film.I will never forget how heartbroken i was when river died..such a tragic waste:-(

Stop hating! Brokeback Mountain is a masterpiece film (wether you find it appealing to you or not), it has a great message and a very touching love story.
About this scene... i like it a lot and i can feel River's character so much (deeply, as if i was him). Btw, did he really kiss him? I cannot see because of the angles and shadows,

Oh, no! I don't hate Brokeback Mountain. Even if it's not one of my favorite movies, I found the actors really convincing and touching with their roles. Especially Mr. Ledger.
What bothers me is that most people give more importance to the fact that those in love were of the same sex, rather than appreciating it as a love story. I don't think it would be as mentioned had the protagonists been of opposite sex.
And no. River and Keanu never kissed. Nevertheless, this scene is intense.

To me this five minute campfire scene was more touching than the two hr long brokeback mountain..So much hurt, so much pain and we as an audience feel it along with River..Its so terrible that such a prized talent was snatched away from us so early on..River no doubt deserved an oscar nomination for this one.He did win the best actor nod at the venice film festival.

Amen to that. I think Brokeback Mountain was hyped, although I admire Ledger and Gyllenhaal as actors.
I love this film; but this scene, in particular, is so moving and so real. It captures fragility, innocence, and just how much it hurts to love someone.
River definitely should've won an Oscar for his portrayal as Mike Waters. I cannot imagine anybody else playing this, or any of his other characters. He was a gifted and unique person and he will be truly missed.

Pheonix is sensational in this scene- and the movie all together-
THIS is what acting is, at least to me. I felt like I was spying on a real life situation- I didn't feel like I was watching someone act. I felt as if I was eavesdropping. And this gives so much depth into his character- Look at them- in the middle of no where with a bike that barely works-Reeve's character has nothing- but he still gives his heart to him because of true love- just excellent!

lol, i still find it funny that the only reason he doesn't think he's gay is that he does it "for money," money that he doesn't even need....
still, even when playing the roll of a male prostitute, Keanu Reeves did ask to not be super involved in any gay scenes. the part with him and Rivers was the only one, and he said that he was really uncomfortable with that.

@buckleygeneration Yeah, I keep seeing people describe Scott as a gay character, but he wasn't really written that way. He's alone with Mike when he says he loves the Italian girl, and his whole lifestyle was just to fuck with his father anyway. I don't know. I wouldn't say he's a gay character. Mike is and the difference is clear, imo.

gus van sant has stated in articals and on the commentary for the dvd that he gave them a chance to perform a kiss, he just let the camera run and they decided to howl at the moon. the scene was added to the dvd's deleted scenes. you can view it here, titled 'deleted scene- campfire'.

I think in the original script Mike went over to Scott and they had sex (if I interpreted it correctly; the script can be found and downloaded on the net). Now after the rework, it's more about love, and just love for and by another human being, down to the basics, regardless of gender, nothing more, nothing less. River was so talented at such a young age! I can never get over the film, the heart wrenching feeling will forever remain with me. This film changed my life.

I first watched this film about 15 years ago and it has become my all time no. 1 favorite film ever since. Every time I watch it breaks my heart all over again. River Phoenix's performance is absolutely matchless. He reworked the script for this famous campfire scene with the permission of Gus van Sant and thus putting into his character (Mike Waters) so much more depth and humanity.

this is one of the sweetest, heartwrenching scenes ever in a movie. To me My Own Private Idaho was never really a gay movie like I felt Brokeback Mountain was but really just a movie about unrequited love that everyone can relate to.

I find that all very confusing. I mean, he said that his brother lived in Idaho, but nothing indicates that Richard is his brother. When Richard starts yelling at Mike, Mike even says "Dad!" to him. I read some review somewhere that says he that Mike is the product of an incestuos relationship between his mother and his brother, but fuck that, I don't believe that.

How I interpreted the thing the first time I watched it was that Richard was his father, but not his actual father, since his real father was 'that cowboy fuck'. I don't even think that he thought Richard was his brother, the only indication of that is that he says his brother lives in Idaho. Richard also refers to a conversation he had with Sharon, where he called her by her first name. That at least implies that he wasn't Sharon's son.

I saw this film ages ago, didn't remember much only that I liked it and that there was a scene in it with a campfire. So I was taken off guard by this tidal wave of emotions that are there in this. Probably didn't understand much of it as a teenager.
