  • I know it pleases some to think of River as the edgy one and Keanu as the Hollywood pretty boy, but both Keanu and River seemed equally at ease with the film's content. It is Keanu and not River after all who has a gay kiss in the film (with their pimp Bob)

Beautiful and heartbreaking moment, bravo to both actors.

    RIP River :(

  • Wherever,whatever....

This movie is so touching, and this is my favourite scene.River is amazing.

  • miss river <3

  • Omg what happens after?

But anywhore awwww that was so cute

  • My favorite scene, definitely. The emotions you can feel in this... it's incredible.

  • This is my favorite scene in film--period. Thank you for posting. For a film project, I re-made this scene with me playing River's role. But I'm not a guy...and I'm not River, so it wasn't the same. Beautiful and heartbreaking. I wish he were still around acting circles around everyone else...

  • River. Why did you have to die. Why. Why. Why. Why. Why. Why. Why. So, so amazing.

  • i have friends and family that make fun of me and look down on me for the movies i enjoy, but i dont care. this scene is one of the most beautiful and touching scenes i have ever seen in a movie. i adore this movie for so many reasons. i wish more people could appreciate the beauty in people as human beings instead of slapping a label on them and judging them.

  • this is just so honest and true and voulnerable. i think this is the best "love convession" i've seen on film, and it makes me cry everytime i see it.

  • i like the whole entire dialogue i mean i have done this dialog in a sense because being a queer guy and confessing that i love a friend who is straight its very much so like this scene looking at it. i love the fact that you cant see what they are doing when scott tells mike to come here this could be fun you determine if they kiss or not its very interesting on that take on their relationship.

  • @Otepfan1362 I agree, I love the ambiguity. You can never really tell if Scott was gay or not, and whether he was being dishonest to himself about his feelings for Mike. Even Mike's feelings are ambiguous, because he may think he loves Scott romantically, when really he's just looking for someone to take care of him, and the only kind of attention he's used to getting is romantic/sexual attention, and so confuses friendship for sexual attraction.

  • Scott is not gay. Anyone who thinks so is missing a huge part of this movie and why the movie is so heartbreaking. If Scott had been gay he would have admitted it to his best friend at the campfire and they would have become lovers. But Scott's love for Mike was superficial and he acted as if he was doing Mike a favor by having sex with him. We love Scott throughout the movie but by the end he's not very likeable.

  • River wrote his speech in this scene. Amazing, beautiful, immensely talented actor.

  • And so the lesson is we all need hugs, no matter what we are.

  • In a world where so many straight men are homophobic, watching Keanu Reeves' character stroke River Phoenix's character's hair tenderly makes me happy inside in a way I can't explain. I imagine how it would be if all men could see past sexual orientation and just love people for who they are, not who they're attracted to.

  • @cadmiumblue it's not only men, where do you live?

  • @shelteringshade I said straight men because that was relevant to this scene. If it was a love scene between two women I would mention that yes, some straight women are homophobic, but admittedly, men are typically much worse.

  • If you think about it in Stand By Me River was sitting around a campfire in almost the same position. Love ya River.

  • really beautiful scene. speaks volumes about river phoenix's passion for his work...gay or straight, this scene goes beyond sexuality to a deep and unseeing love..

  • beautiful scene and great film. thanks for uploading it

  • my first love!

  • Honestly.... this is probably one of the best scenes in all of film history.

  • You can see how much influence River took from Jimmy Dean's performances in RWOAC and East of Eden especially...

    Amazing.

  • @NzerinOz type river phoenix imdb in google and open the first page, there's a list of everything he ever filmed :)

  • @NzerinOz no, he died 2 years later

  • i love this scene , so pure (:

  • This is such a beautiful scene from two terrific actors. River Phoenix was such a brilliant actor and it was a terrible shame to loose a talent like him. Rip river.

  • ;_______;

That is moviemagic, right there. Amazing.

  • this scene was so powerful and so beautiful that most of us thought they were in love in real life lol

  • such a sweet romantic scene, i don't know much about river phoenix but he seemed like a fine actor, great scene with him and keanu reeves

  • "I really wanna kiss you, man." ... Best thing I've ever heard coming out of River's mouth to another man.

  • OMG He was so talented. He said that Keanu Reeves was his best friend.

  • one of the best movie scenes ever

  • i just realized many of river's emotional breakdown scenes are outside in the woods somewhere lol But every one of them scenes are amazing. RIP River<3

  • OMG!

It's been something like 18 years since this came out and about 16 years since his death. All these years I never gave much thought to seeing this film and River Phoenix's talent.

What an amazing scene. It has to be ranked as one of the most heartfelt declarations of love, of longing ever put on film. Late, but I have to admit now, the world lost a very fine actor! Now I have to see the entire film and River Phoenix's other films. Thank you for this clip.

  • It comes down to: Does anyone "want" me. Want. This asks the question. "Want." Damn. Doesn't anyone want me. Makes one wonder whether one is worth living. Ask it. Do you want me? Want. Ask any dog, cat. Then you ask any person. "Do you WANT me." Have you a heart?" Damn. I don't know.

  • This video was so swet.I really want to see this movie,I love River Phoenix!

  • river phoenix is, was, and always will be the King of emotional campfire scenes x r.i.p.

  • Too much information. Or someone has been drinking while near a computer.

  • I understand this scene. Felt the same way as "Mike." Never felt I could just say it. Came close, but as it was in the 70's, 80's, being gay wasn't nearly as accepted then as it is now. Many regrets that I didn't just come on out and say it. I know now that in a couple of cases, I'd have found someone to love me the same way I loved them. Oh well.I don't care anymore if anyone wants me. I can live with myself now, no need for anyone. Bye, Tim, Storm, you never loved me the way I did you.

  • @xAxiom720x : I hate you. You're probably one of those fat beeyatches who wears a tee shirt that says, "Sexy Babe." Miss Piggy. No one wants your fat ugly heteromongo bitch ass. I hate you. Fuck you. You're the reason I can't love women. Jump off a cliff. I would rather love a decent guy than you. you are the type who turned me against females. You think you own us. Sorry. You're ugly on the inside, and I suspect you're ugly on the outside.Sic your Brutus boyfriend on me. He's likely a dumbass.

  • Not everyone is like @xAxiom720x, soco13466. Just ignore these people.

  • @floatingweeds Guess so.

  • @soco13466 Ignore xAxiom720x, people who make hateful comments towards gay people never have a high IQ and any decent or smart person just laughs at these ignorant bastards because we know how stupid they sound when say things like faggot or dyke.

  • @soco13466 not all women are bad..

  • @xAxiom720x Wow... you're a bi*ch. BAHAHA! Then why are you watching this? I think straight girl's got a secret crush on gay flicks.

P.s. I'm a GAY GIRL. Scary isn't it? Bane of society? Literally eat my ass. If you don't appreciate certain types of film, then don't watch them. Period. We'll leave Dear John and The Notebook to you and those like you.

  • @sen1999 why is notebook bad?

  • never felt so close to a scene in my life. amazingly sensitive acting by pheonix.

  • River is so cute!

    I wanna hold him!

I want to give him a hug!

Why did he have to die?

  • it´s SUCH a moving scene..

  • I want to make a collection of River's films. I have Stand By Me and thats pretty much it lol I love their performances in this film!!

  • They would be a cute couple in real life :P

  • @OscarMaris :What a real asshole you are.

  • @soco13466 i agree

  • the best scene..i think even homophobic people would be touched.perfect acting-so over the top emotionally but never pathetic.

idaho and wkw's happy together are the best gay movies ever!

  • Great movie, awsome actors and sad story, but this is the best scene ever. And rikadew fuck you.

  • so sweet, so tender, so sad...

    beautiful scene.

  • I cried tears of joy while watching this movie!

  • many gay storyline movies that I have seen, are always so sad at the end, either they separated or one of them would die from another. However I love these plots that are really close to my reality.

  • one of the most beautiful scenes in movie history!

  • i cryed at the very end of this film...i almost cried when Scott left Mike in italy, but i held myself together...but at the end, at Bob's funeral when they meet glances and Mike smiles...i was a wreck lol x

one of the best movies ive ever seen (and ive seen alot).

  • This scene never fails to touch me. Makes me cry everytime I watch it.

  • Makes me fucking cry, every time. Jesus.

  • it's so true... GOD IS BI !!

  • still the coolest gay characters in contemporary cinema

  • " I love you and you don't pay me" That line brings me to tears so sweet and beautifully written!

  • Great movie!

  • i got all teary when i watched this scene

  • After all these years, still heartbreaking...

  • This scene is beyond words. This desperation for love, the loneliness, the sense of rejection, the vulnerability....it's just heart-breaking. I really miss River.

  • I think this is such a great scene - it speaks beyond gender and sexuality and all those labels and just hits anyone who's ever felt unrequited love. It's so intense and honest.

I really miss River Phoenix. He was such an amazing actor - you can actually FEEL his yearning for Scott. That's powerful stuff right there.

  • @theatakesphotos I love this scene, it's made all the better by the fact that River wrote this himself <3

  • wow, Pheonix was such a great actor, he just had an intensity, and realness about, him ...

  • Whether or not they kiss doesn't matter, I think. I think what mattered to Mike was that he finally got to admit to Scott that he loved him and that's the beauty of it. If he had kissed him, that would have been great. But I think that there's more to this scene; there's more sincerity and honesty to it than any lust or whatever. This is my favorite movie of all time. RIP River. It wouldn't have been the same film without him, y'know?

  • This made me cry ç_ç

  • this scene was written by river phoenix >>> i read it on imdb

  • i was disapointed that he didnt got his kiss

  • me pareció una película muy triste

  • gtreat film and makes me cry......

  • This part of movie so hard to watch river look so sad and what he is saying is so sincere. I can relate to how he feels. Colleen Phoenixxxooo

  • Absolutely timeless... the scene is so special, so important and powerful to me. that's my favorit scene of the whole movie!

what does matter is LOVE and not your sex...

  • Absolutely timeless... the scene is so special, so important and powerful to me. The sound of Red Indians in the distance...

  • that's my favorit scene of the whole movie. I watched it like 10 times ^^ such a gorgeos and emotional scene. river was a gift at actor

  • Such a simple but powerful and emotional scene from one of my all time favourite films. River Phoenix was a genius and he never seemed to act; he was! The chemistry they both have in this film is beautiful.

  • one of the best scenes of all time

  • Possibly my fave ever scene in a film and River's greatest. OMG just love the beauty of this scene - heartbreaking and awesome. He is so missed. The potential he had and didn't achieve is so sad.

  • er, 2008.

  • River Phoenix was quite a unique talent. I would love to have seen what he would have done with his career had he lived to 2005. Lesser actors have done greater things.

  • When River says, "That's okay" and also "I love you--and you don't pay me" I practically cry.

  • i cant stand it. Not seen this film in ages but this scene still gives me shivers. I feel like i shouldnt be there watching it you know? probably one of the most beautiful scenes ever committed to celluloid. And i read that River Phoenix wrote the whole thing! To write that stuff and be so perfect in it? im so, so very sad he's gone. he would have done incredible things. it wasnt fair what happened to him. its even less fair how things as great as this performance are overshadowed by it. RIP.

  • mmm...

  • I adored this film when i was in my teens aswell.Infact im sure i still have it on video somewhere. Both keanu & river were excellent in this film.I will never forget how heartbroken i was when river died..such a tragic waste:-(

  • It still hurts me to see River; what a tragic loss! He is superb here, so touchingly vulnerable.

  • This is one of my favorite scenes in this film. It's just so honest and pure.

  • Keanu owns this scene. "Alright, come here mike" is delivered with such passion that this scene should have given Keanu an Oscar.

  • River is just great in that scene, much, much better then Keanu. He was amazing actor indeed, and he could achieve a lot. I love the way he plays in that film, he really feels the character, it's marvellous i adore him.

  • i LOVED this movie when i was a teen i need to go find it on dvd! haven't watched it in ages!

    R.I.P. Rivers

  • River is amazing as usual and Reeves gives a good subtle performance. Keanu is HOT.

  • Stop hating! Brokeback Mountain is a masterpiece film (wether you find it appealing to you or not), it has a great message and a very touching love story.

About this scene... i like it a lot and i can feel River's character so much (deeply, as if i was him). Btw, did he really kiss him? I cannot see because of the angles and shadows,

  • Oh, no! I don't hate Brokeback Mountain. Even if it's not one of my favorite movies, I found the actors really convincing and touching with their roles. Especially Mr. Ledger.

What bothers me is that most people give more importance to the fact that those in love were of the same sex, rather than appreciating it as a love story. I don't think it would be as mentioned had the protagonists been of opposite sex.

And no. River and Keanu never kissed. Nevertheless, this scene is intense.

  • I thought they did kiss no?

  • yes he really did kiss him although it looks like he does not. I've read endless articles and heard other actors talk about this scene too.

  • To me this five minute campfire scene was more touching than the two hr long brokeback mountain..So much hurt, so much pain and we as an audience feel it along with River..Its so terrible that such a prized talent was snatched away from us so early on..River no doubt deserved an oscar nomination for this one.He did win the best actor nod at the venice film festival.

  • Amen to that. I think Brokeback Mountain was hyped, although I admire Ledger and Gyllenhaal as actors.

I love this film; but this scene, in particular, is so moving and so real. It captures fragility, innocence, and just how much it hurts to love someone.

River definitely should've won an Oscar for his portrayal as Mike Waters. I cannot imagine anybody else playing this, or any of his other characters. He was a gifted and unique person and he will be truly missed.

  • River's acting in this scene broke my heart! I still miss River immensely!!

  • magnifique !!!!!!!

  • So handsome...

  • omg he was gay in this movie!!!!!!!!!!! thats ok keanu is hot 2 so u get two for the price of one! n yeah Rivers voice is soooooooooo smexcci!!!

  • Oh my god, will you please THINK before you type anything? No one likes fangirls like you other than other fangirls.

  • Pheonix is sensational in this scene- and the movie all together-

THIS is what acting is, at least to me. I felt like I was spying on a real life situation- I didn't feel like I was watching someone act. I felt as if I was eavesdropping. And this gives so much depth into his character- Look at them- in the middle of no where with a bike that barely works-Reeve's character has nothing- but he still gives his heart to him because of true love- just excellent!

  • I totally and completely agree. I love how River played this part, particularly in the scene when he was so vulnerable and putting hi entire heart out there. Gay or not, we can all relate.

  • This is, and will remain, one of the most intimate scenes ever on film. I love it. Wonderfully acted by River. He breaks my heart.

  • My god, River's voice... I'm... astounded. What terrific actor! The pain, Mike's fragility... Such an amazing performance!

  • i love you and you don't pay me...

  • beautiful...

  • I'm sorry to disappoint all the people who think they actually kiss in this scene, but they don't. Scott says: "Let's just sleep", and that's what they do.

  • yeah, thats because Keanu Reeves wasn't really comfortable with the whole acting gay thing...

  • Maybe not, but it doesn't show that much in the film...I mean, his character isn't even really gay.

  • lol, i still find it funny that the only reason he doesn't think he's gay is that he does it "for money," money that he doesn't even need....

still, even when playing the roll of a male prostitute, Keanu Reeves did ask to not be super involved in any gay scenes. the part with him and Rivers was the only one, and he said that he was really uncomfortable with that.

  • You mean the still shots of him together with Mike and Hans? That was funny. :P

  • @buckleygeneration Yeah, I keep seeing people describe Scott as a gay character, but he wasn't really written that way. He's alone with Mike when he says he loves the Italian girl, and his whole lifestyle was just to fuck with his father anyway. I don't know. I wouldn't say he's a gay character. Mike is and the difference is clear, imo.

  • that's what I thought! but most seem to think they kiss-can anyone lead me to an article where gus van sant or someone clears this up?

  • gus van sant has stated in articals and on the commentary for the dvd that he gave them a chance to perform a kiss, he just let the camera run and they decided to howl at the moon. the scene was added to the dvd's deleted scenes. you can view it here, titled 'deleted scene- campfire'.

  • beautiful...

  • AMAZING scene. River is one of the few actors who bared his soul!

  • was it implaied that they had sex?

  • this is a great scene

    its one of my favorites

  • I think in the original script Mike went over to Scott and they had sex (if I interpreted it correctly; the script can be found and downloaded on the net). Now after the rework, it's more about love, and just love for and by another human being, down to the basics, regardless of gender, nothing more, nothing less. River was so talented at such a young age! I can never get over the film, the heart wrenching feeling will forever remain with me. This film changed my life.

  • I first watched this film about 15 years ago and it has become my all time no. 1 favorite film ever since. Every time I watch it breaks my heart all over again. River Phoenix's performance is absolutely matchless. He reworked the script for this famous campfire scene with the permission of Gus van Sant and thus putting into his character (Mike Waters) so much more depth and humanity.

  • I love the way River talks..there's just something about his soft, soothing voice. And Keanu is just gorgeous! I feel like crying whenever I watch this on DVD...

  • I could never really tell if Keanu gave us Canadians a bad rep, but know he does'nt, hott!

  • this is one of the sweetest, heartwrenching scenes ever in a movie. To me My Own Private Idaho was never really a gay movie like I felt Brokeback Mountain was but really just a movie about unrequited love that everyone can relate to.

  • i guess the point is that *all* love is something we *all* can relate to, gay straight or undecided

  • This is one of my all-time favorite scenes.

  • That is such a lovely scene!Keanu should have given him a bit more love.

  • river phoenix was incredible...RIP!

And SHOCK, KEANU REEVES CAN ACTUALLY ACT!

  • this is one of my favorite parts along with the part where they go to see his brother.

  • they visited his father, not his brother

  • Both, because as a child he believed that he is his brother and later he recognized that he is his father.

  • I find that all very confusing. I mean, he said that his brother lived in Idaho, but nothing indicates that Richard is his brother. When Richard starts yelling at Mike, Mike even says "Dad!" to him. I read some review somewhere that says he that Mike is the product of an incestuos relationship between his mother and his brother, but fuck that, I don't believe that.

  • How I interpreted the thing the first time I watched it was that Richard was his father, but not his actual father, since his real father was 'that cowboy fuck'. I don't even think that he thought Richard was his brother, the only indication of that is that he says his brother lives in Idaho. Richard also refers to a conversation he had with Sharon, where he called her by her first name. That at least implies that he wasn't Sharon's son.

  • River was a phenomenal actor, and so beautiful, it really saddens me that we did not have a chance to see him reach his full potential. His brother is really a gifted actor as well

  • i have not seen the entire movie, but this part is really amazing.

  • Keanu and River weren't a couple they were just really gud friends is all and they worked together a few times, Keanu even did a movie with Joaquin Phoenix. Love River still ;)

  • Aww. They cuddled down by the fire! So cute! I've heard that they were a couple in real life!

To bad Keanu's character turned out to be such an ass!

  • eumh, no they weren't a couple in real life :). he had girlfriends (River) I think at that time it was Samantha Mattis (but I'm NOT sure so don't shoot me if I'm wrong ;))

  • I Love this scene! River was a one in a million actor.

  • thank you xxx

  • what happens in this film????

  • imdb. com / title / tt0102494 / plotsummary

  • brilliant film, i love the camp fire part :)

  • That must have been a uncomfortable scene to shoot. You know since neither of them were gay I think.

  • This movie makes me cry. I just watched it the first time ever and it tore my heart in half..

  • OMG! they kissed eachother!! :D <3

  • There is no kiss, they just hag and then Mike falls asleep. Sorry, but they really don't kiss.

  • I adore this film so much, but I agree with grapeflavored... the kiss should've been more visual!!

River was so beautiful, and Keanu was, and remains, so beautiful :)

  • I wish Keanu fell in the fire. He sucks and has continued to suck in EVERY movie since MOPI except for the Matrix because that movie was cool as shit. A can of creamed corn could have played NEO.

  • no bull shit that was good acting

  • I saw this film ages ago, didn't remember much only that I liked it and that there was a scene in it with a campfire. So I was taken off guard by this tidal wave of emotions that are there in this. Probably didn't understand much of it as a teenager.

  • river was such a good actor.

  • Boo.. Why couldn't they make the kiss a little more visual?

  • River wrote his own lines.
