@rockman1022 The train of thought, and correctly so, is that only downpicking has an overall heavier tone. Root note strummed before the octave note has a beefier/chunkier tone. Upstrokes hit the higher note first, less oomph behind the tone. Try it yourself. Maybe you don't hear it, but we do.

John Petrucci, in another way, is a technic and feeling monster, and knows so much about scales than Hammet. Don't misunderstand me, I love what Kirk is doing in Metallica, but he will NEVER be able to play the easiest Dream Theater solo half as good as Petrucci.

And the very technical very educated musicians which compose Dream Theatre. With metallica songs were not so much of a science. okay peoples listen up, the diffrence between DT and Metallica is that both bands have great musicians, Petrucci is a complete diffrence of Hammet, Hammet plays more bluesy stuff, so his stage performance is still great while petrucci doesnt seem to have a huge ass cool stage performance, but he plays extremly virtuostic, the guitar solo's in 'tallica doesnt need the virtoustic element DT needs, because they are a Headbanging metal band, which dream theater isnt at all, i like bang bands more.
