The distances should be measured from near the posterior aspect of the eye's lens, not from its center, no?

They are using a standard coordinate system. So distances to the left of the lens are negative. Thus the formula at 1:50 is correct.

The expression at 1:50 is wrong beacuse 1/F = 1/v + 1/u
