This song iss based on the mining operations through Appalachia. It is all true.time magazine had a photo with John Prine atop a bulldozer.they said he was an employee of the Peabody Goal.FunnyHe has been active enemy of the coal companies..
I was coming from North Carolina to Illinois and I took my two sons to Muhlenberg County Kentucky. There was a town there named Paradise and you can see the big Peabody Coal Company. I got a couple of pieces of coal. We went down to the Green River, we went to the Rochester Dam. We trudged through the woods and there is a building that was once the prison John sings about below a high bluff not far from the river. The Everly Brothers are also from here.
@FredCDobbs00 Yep, the TVA power company bought out the residents and shut the town down in '67 or '69 I can't remember which. Due to safety concerns over the power plant opened in '62. The TVA then proceeded to add a third boiler unit to the site. It was then and still is to this day the largest boiler in the world. So they deserve some credit too. But this is similar to stories all through Appalachia and the coal belt, of the raping of nature and culture for the sake of supposed progress
