While technically true, it really has become so synonymous with those from England, it's a bit confusing when applied to any and all from Great Britain. I guess if someone were talking about all the people in all the Americas it would make sense to call them American collectively, but calling one person American really does give the impression they are from The United States. You're not wrong, but people WILL misunderstand.
