  • Damn! Try this, Crapple! XD

  • MICROSUCK strikes again with a useless product. This thing is a joke for so many reasons, such as....

    1. Hunchback Geek Syndrome: So I gottah pull my back out of alignment while using this thing.

    2. Expensive: So I have to buy a whole new monitor and toss out my old one

    3. Why do I need it. The Nintendo Wii, Sony PS3, and soon the Xbox360 already have similar technologies and they are compatible with a regular TV. All you need is software, a control device, and a receiver eye.

  • @6evorev6

    1. You can easily raise it up by putting it on top of something

    2. If you were the people they were marketing to you wouldn't find it expensive, plus no one said you had to throw out your old monitor.

    3. None of those systems can do anything but play games. This can do anything a normal computer can do (which, by the way, since it's Microsoft, is much more than Apple).

  • RTS Games~!~

  • 0:42 magic lens... that reminds me about some childbook about dinosours ^^

  • it'll crash and go blue screen if you try to close it XD

  • nice/interesting, not useful id say

atleast not in this era, maybe a couple decades back

  • isn't it called microsoft "surface"?

  • So this can basically project a 3D object into thin air? Pretty nifty if you ask me :D

  • already played a game on a prototype in a university in germany 2.5 years ago ...

it was pong with multiple balls

your was created paddles between 2 points where you tipped at the screen.

was pretty cool. maybe i find the video again

  • i could see using a greatly refined version of the first one, mainly if they got it to actually USE windows, and all of the applications and things that are obviously included with windows

  • this is cool!

it would be quite intresting to play around like this. if they can do this, why not make keyboards that don't make tapping noises? you could have a completly flat keyboard.

    would be very cool...

  • A virtual screen keyboard is a good idea for people who still look while typing. But for people who can type without looking at all need the physical feel and feedback of key positions for accurate perfect typing. Typing becomes second nature, literally as if your thoughts directly put the words on the screen. It is amazing the body's ability to retain physical memory with practice (walking, dancing, music). Accuracy would be more important to a person proficient at typing than noise reduction

  • It might be useless, but I bet Apple will get this on the "Wish list" of "where we should beat Microsoft as soon as they fail with their try" XDXDXD

  • its damn cool and damn useless at once!

I mean.. think of it.. or all the other microsoft surface-demos... why in the hell would i want to have my photo from my digicam just put on a virtual pile on my surface-desk? thats like analog-photography. it uses extreme high-tech to kill the advantage the high-tech brought us in comparison to analog.... omfg?! what were they thinking? btw: no restaurant will be able to buy these, except you pay 99$ for you pizza afterwards (price: 20.000$ per table)

  • if you do your homework this is 1950 technology 6.5 billion on the planet but no one has got it yet

  • Both look pretty damn useless.

  • aswome you can build cars just looking at it

  • i hate the woman speaking

  • me too

  • well i bet she hates u too

  • Microsofts next game console should be like this!

  • Hate to break up the party but the surface of a sphere is not a 3-dimensional space. It's every bit as flat as the surface of my screen...

  • You have to clean it every minute....

  • This actually looks pretty cool. If Microsoft can do all this, why can't they make a reliable operating system? >:-)

  • its more like takin an idea and tryin something new with it.....

  • I want one

  • Not to be insulting to you 'fanboys', This is very cool technology, but permanently hating something all because of rival companies is just completely stupid.

  • Very nice video and understanding. on my website you can use mobile search were you will rec info and promotions on any mobile phone. Very nice feature to use. Very nice video.

  • Woot! This will finally finish off Apple and those bitchy fanbois for good!

  • Umm... sure.... I think someone is still waiting for their balls to drop.

  • Now upload Google Earth on it.

  • and call it Google Globe...XD

  • seems rath novelity, we have laptops, lot more portable...and i could just turn my laptop around, or hook it up to a projecter of lots of people needed to see it.

  • okay, so lasers beamed to a sphere... if several concentric transparent spheres were aligned within each other... wouldn't that make the 3D display Rick and Max play video games on in the original Macross(Japanese)/Robotech(UK/US) series?

  • Take that mac! In your face!

  • ah fuck there goes my only privacy when im watchin porn.

  • lol xx

  • i want the ball 1 no homo

  • omg i can just imagin flicking porn images at someone on the other side of that globe lol.

but this is some seriously cool technology.

  • Picture the blue screen of death on a sphere.

  • dude, i build one of these for 300 bucks!

  • You type, using your keyboard and looking at your computer monitor right after watching a video that has been streamed through the internet.

  • BONER!

  • let me get this straight. They make this ball so two or more people don't have to watch one monitor? Dumb....

  • as it stand at this minute 4:07 on 11/10/08, this is something stupid, but could prove to be maybe, just maybe useful in the near future. I hope MS is not claiming that they are the first to come up with the touch screen concept because is not true. I have seen it being used in linux before Windows came up with the concept.

  • Oops did I accidentially find a bug in youtube on 11/10/08 @ 4:08

  • no you didnt

  • ..i wanna play....

  • I hate how they're prototyping every crap they think of just in case it gts popular. This sperical nonsense will never catch, especially at that radius and the table itself is a bulky inefficient mess. Its only for early adopters, rich bastards, what's the rush, this stuff wil be much more feasible in a few years when its actually doing sometihng practical

  • The stuff won't ever be doing something practical until it has been prototyped and played with first. Everything you use was once an oddity in a lab somewhere.

  • That's not true. Most of what's getting prototyped is just a waste of resources. I should specify that I'm not refering to technology like HDTV vs CRTs, 16 bit vs 32bit consoles, or bluetooth, wifi and other emergent technology. I'm talking about the wishful user interfaces and all the crap that makes a cell phone indistinguishable from a handheld console. Its just a waste of resources

  • need me 1 of those

  • I don't believe this will go far, with the touch globe. Except for the way they looked at pictures, handling it with two people, I just can't see anyone using it.

Maybe they should add the touch screen to regular monitors so that anyone can touch instead of click on their PC.

  • I wonder if you can eat fingerfoods while touching that ball.

  • Good, if theres no children there then the world wont be poor anymore, and those stupid adverts about how hungry they are ont be there because there wont be any babies to die =]

  • Bill Gates has given untold millions to fund the World Health Organization. They've been caught secretly administering abortifacients (drugs or other agents that induce abortions) in serums to third-world women.

  • Maybe this is actually a good thing? It certainly would reduce suffering and death of children later on. Where did you hear about this though, any chance of a link. Cheers El

  • There's plenty of suffering in hospitals.

    Let's mercifully kill the patients.

  • Exactly! Its crazy how they let terminally ill people suffer in agony and yet they would put down an animal thats suffering that much. I am totally for Voluntary Euthinasia. wow this is going a bit off topic isnt it lol

  • Hospitals are hiring. It's a career choice

that may be tailor-made for you.

  • Im quite happy in the career i have, but thnx for the heads up!

  • Yes, it's a bad time to jump ship.

  • And how do you feel about that?

Saying something that isn't backed up by fact is considered slander. I suggest you expose your source...to convince me and anyone else who reads this crap.

  • Non-readers, like yourself, are chronically aghast & awed. Perhaps you might read something not recommended by Oprah for a change?

  • I knew it, Microsoft is in cahoots with Windex.

  • LOOOOOLLLL!

  • Not practical. Leaning over a table-top would give you a bad back and reading a letter from a globe would be completely shit. See you next month when you've spent another few million on impressive, useless nonsense.

  • Remember your keyboard could be replaced by a touch screen device with some sort of harmonic feedback, aswell as you screen giving you two surfaces to use, think laptop rather then these tables.

  • yeah that's what people in the 60s used to think the future would look like. I have an old science magazine where they talked about how the world would be like in the year 2000. apparently we'd all be traveling using zeppelins and computers would plug directly into our brains.

but guess what? keyboards STILL is the best and most practical way of using a computer. and it will not change...until we can plug computers into our heads.

  • Yeah but you know how young people are, check out all the phones and media devices that are touch screen, with the right marketing suckers will buy stuff :P

Look at Apples mp3 players, most of their users don't even realise thats all they are XD

by the by, I have seen a touch screen keyboard whilst initially it was tricky it wasnt to bad.

P.S they would work well in strip clubs and what not where keys would get stuck down from sugary liquids XD

  • yeah but if you're talking about touch-screen KEYBOARDS then they're still keyboards. :S my point is that they'll never have a star-trek type of screen where you have to touch random symbols to make the computer do something, it's just not as practical as a mouse and keyboard.

  • This was not invented by microsoft. you can do this yourself with a $40 Wii remote and some open source software.

  • yeah touch screen has been around for AGES not even apple

  • Nice progress from MS.

  • not for home use, unless you are a billionare! they should start making stuff for regular home use!!!

  • touch screen is relatively inexpensive and should have been implemented long ago

  • camera+ glossed screen+primative software..viola

  • XD yeah

  • that is sweet with that painting hand :)

  • useless...

  • Well your little mac sucks donkeyshit

  • Brute, but tru

  • This isn't useless, I saw on wired science that the military actually has a version of this, that they use, and it has google earth on it, and they use it to make plans and shit and you can see the traffic and go online and other stuff. The thing costs like $50k though..

  • the average American is to lazy for that kind of technology they should reconsider this and stick to what they know best

  • Pointless, and overly complex. What is wrong with a mouse or touchpad?

  • People once said the same thing about computers in general.. after all, whats wrong with pen and paper?

  • Not as fast.

Microsoft just keep trying to make things shiny, they didn't do it well with Vista. Now I run Linux because of that. This won't make me change my mind, mainly because I can't see this being used at home.

  • I don't think it will take all too-long before unique applications are invented to harness touch-screen and make it much more valuable for everyday usage.. For what people do now on computers, touch screen does definitely seem a little overkill, but then again at one point so did a GUI and even the mouse.

BTW, I'm a fellow Linux user as well ;)

  • I can see applications being created to be used with an interface like this, but can't see them being used outside of somewhere like the Glasgow Science Museum.

    BTW, which Distro?

  • Opensuse 11

  • I run Ubuntu 8.04, unfortunately their are no 8.10 compatible drivers for my WiFi. :'(

  • AWESOME..... TOO GOO

  • cool. now i can go balling at home.

  • pimp

  • BBOD ftw

  • Microsoft doesn't design computers...

  • my computer works fine and its windows

  • Microsoft has been working on this for a while. it was first showed on the movie The island with scarlett johansson

  • i don't care how "old" this is, it's quite cool

  • brilliant, if they could just reduce the depth to about an inch or two, that would make it widely applicable

  • now that looks like an expensive globe

  • barrybob: the sphere and the tabletop touch screens are /useless/. The most you can do is finger paint and fuck with pictures.

  • truely useless

    fix vista idiots

  • They already did. Its called Windows 7

  • i think that windows 7 is going to be better than vista, :)

i have used the M1 Release of it.

and it is just beautiful altho uses the vista GUI enviorment. Its just great.

  • yah it is going to be great if you like to be spied on.

  • can u explain more? is windows 7 gonna replace vista soon? thank you

  • that's ok i just read thats it's gonna be ready in about 3 years

  • Who would actualy buy that giant sphere.

  • Haha take that macintosh u gunna git pwned by microsofts new touchscreens ya fucking macs. lets see mac come out with something this awesome

  • you mean something like... a computer that works?

  • that chicks voice was so weird

  • manipoolate? is that a fucking computer voice?

  • The ball part of it is pretty useless, I think they should of just stayed at Microsoft Surface

  • Ball is cool actually. You may not see a use for it but there are plenty of applications on the science, display and buisness end that sort of thing would be ideal for. I bet Big oil would pay big money for that.

Although with that said, the future interface will be no screen at all. It's a step in the right direction I suppose. Holo displays ftw!

  • the narrator has a REALLY annoying voice

  • big fucking whoop, multi touch the size of a washing machine? "magic" lense? MEH

  • lasers were made with absolutely no application at all. and look at all the scientific applications now.

    who's to say this won't?

  • yea. i always said feet warming usb dongles were goin to end up being the cure for cancer.

  • And I always said cocaine addicts can extinguish forest fires with their snorts.

Damn...I was hoping to make a statement that makes less sense than yours did, but I sorta failed on that point.

  • They do...Bill Gates has one of the biggest charity donation services in the world...your just a useless mac fan.

  • Yeah his charity is all about Eugenics and population control hidden behind the false front of vaccines.

  • Because bill already has anotehr company set up for charity.

  • that last part looked fun

  • Another useless Microsoft surface application.

  • Does anybody REALLY need a giant glass ball?

  • They're a tax write-off for fortune tellers.

  • for a globe it would be pretty cool.

  • most interesting

  • Can you play solitaire or minesweeper on them? I hope they run Microsoft Works.

  • wow. get a different fucking narrator, i can barely watchi ths.

  • Meh old-newscientist... "embrace, extend and extinguish"

    watch?v=LXAqdh4-hcw

    watch?v=MV_xkz5D22w

  • that is Beast!

  • The spherical monitor is genius - with flat monitors, the problem is that you can see the entire thing. I suppose until I can buy this, I'll have to make due by covering half of my monitor with a sheet of construction paper.

  • No. You should watch the part about infrared and projectors one more time.

  • Yes is interesting... but of course not a mass product. Experimental.

  • its just you... the iphone uses a simple chemical touch screen ;)

  • thats sick...

  • Steve Jobs ate my globes.

  • they couldn't get a woman without the stupid fucking Spanish accent. She sounds like a moron.

    and I'm Puerto Rican.

  • The setup seems expensive for what the hell it accomplishes.

  • 10 years from now and people will look back at this and laugh at how huge it is

  • imagin the BSOD on that ball

  • The MS haters are just mad because Linux and Apple don't have anything like this.

    lol :)

  • but when they do, it will be better I'm sure. LOL

  • Nothing too special

  • What the hell is the point? Until we can manipulate computers directly via brain activity, the mouse will do just fine for me, thank you.

  • I agree this is not very creative M$.

  • Bill Gates had this in his basement for like 12 yrs.. This aint nuffin new.. lol

  • Impressive, but I read somewhere that the computer underneath the glass surface is running a modified version of Vista...Oh boy...

  • definitely better than iphone gimmick touch screen

  • Get the fuck out .. This is called Innovation jackass

  • Looks like a $20,000 toy to me. Microsoft didn't invent this. They bought the rights from a couple dudes that created the table top version a couple years ago in their garage.

I want to lick Whoopie Goldbergs eyebrows. I mean the skin where her eyebrows use to be.

  • I guess this is the second version of that surface computer thing froma few months ago.

  • i really like the sphere i bet this technology have been made for a while now but they just are just now giving thnew but we are mases notice of...it might seem like it is new but we are always at least 7 years behind.

  • very cool

  • Why are they toying with these impracticalities? Hurry up and move into interactive holograms.

  • Agreed. I want my Whoopi Goldberg sex bot as soon as!

  • lol microsoft all the way, well, our ideas are amazing, innovative, useless bullshit, but look! we bought these guys who made this AWESOME new software. lol

  • Google earth with that round one would be cool.

  • yeah go microsoft!

  • they should intall linux on them.

that ball would look good with google earth

  • they have too many concepts, not enough real designs. they should only show what they know will be mass produced and bought. the sphere is way too... inconvenient. that would take more space then necessary to ship.

  • Boycott this megashithouse

  • not very pratical.

  • i agree.. but maybe a new form of windows os could make this technology very useful
