Beautiful piece. Variety is the spice of life. If I met John Rutter, I would thank him for keeping it spicy. If this doesn't appeal to your individual taste, than so be it; but to call someone hard work - specially a work which is for GOD - murder, trash, and a travesty is completely rude and uncalled for. Thanks again JR!!
@lorddreams469 Very true, however, John Rutter's music is not for God. John Rutter is agnostic. He doesn't believe in or worship any deity. He simply composes amazing music that touches the lives of other people.
Which version of "Away in a Manger" do you prefer? Both versions I know are "traditional" - I prefer one but would not disparage the other. What on earth could be wrong with the common practice of writing new settings of traditional texts? May God bless you and open your mind to new thoughts and experiences.
I have no idea what people are arguing about here. this hymn, was a just a melodic line, or a full score for SATB choir and orchestra???? so maybe, it was just a melody and rutter arrange it for choir.
I happen to love and appreciate both the traditional version of this text and Rutters'. I think it is OK to have an opinion of which of them speaks to you - but to call the other one a travesty or horrible is out of line. We all like different foods - no one would insist that others should only eat OUR favorite foods. So why should we insist on being fed musically that way? I am glad that both, or either one of the settings might bring someone closer to Christ - and isn't that the point?
Oops a wee raw nerve there. One person's opinion is another person's insult. If i met Rutter - yes I would tell him straight to his face. One of my pet hates is the way in which well known hymns are suddenly sung to 'new' tunes especially when the original is beautiful. Can you imagine 'My Way' or 'Memories' etc getting new tunes? Never, so why do it to beautiful hymns. Ps this has nothing to do with my self esteem - everything to do with my taste - and it is still horrible!! God Bless
@eemo1873 My way? Memories? Riiight. And you reference those because you consider them to be real masterful works? The reason why people arrange and re-arrange hymns and not superficial drivel such as the real "gems" you mentioned, is because hymns have substance and meaning that individuals can self-apply. You can't take substantial life lessons from 'My way'. Rutter has taken a well-known worshipful piece - and made it his own by applying his own testimony of Christ through music. Beautiful
Why do some people think it is a good thing to 'murder' a beautiful hymn set to a beautiful tune and replace it with this inferior garbage. Then the big question is after someone writes this trash why do some people chose to sing it and then claim it is 'awesome'? Compare this with Be Thou My Vision set to the traditional tune? A travesty
@eemo1873 The travesty is that some people think that they are smarter or more worthy because they tear down the work of other people. Have your opinion, but why do you have to insult someone else? It doesn't prove that you are smart, or right. I hope you find some self esteem somewhere. I would be interested to hear your compositions. I would also be interested in seeing you tell John Rutter to his face that his compositions and arrangements are trash, garbage, and a travesty.

Rutter ARRANGED this tune; he did not write it. For reference, see the wikipedia article.
