Designating "atheism" a religion would be a bad idea, no subsidies are worth it! I feel that being an atheist, to me, is not so much NOT believing in a god (that's as easy as not believing in gremlins). My approach is to simply ACCEPT reality for what it is. So much evidence, we who accept & strive to learn more don't need the fragile "shell" of religion to protect us.
That would be my issue. As an analogy, I understand that times in the Old Testament were even more visceral than the Wild West of the U.S., except for that atheists/believers in other religions weren't always the bank robbers. However, they were hung at the gallows as though they were.
Some of us humans believe that society is a real thing; that treating one another ethically is possible without 'Big Brother.' I don't expect a reward, and I don't do it to avoid punishment. That's altruism.
It is a pity that before relying on the bible as a text book for life the world's population hasn't made sure it is right first. Like 2+2=4. If that's wrong the mathematic's game is up. Ditto Bible.
All the evidence proves the bible is wrong, can't help it the bible is simply wrong in he first chapter. See 'The Bible Right or Wrong'- YouTube.
For atheists it is a good idea to know why the bible is wrong and explain clearly in words of one syllable. It can be done very convincingly
You know, I've never doubted that some of the human race evolved from apes...a glance at this putrefaction is enough to convince on that level...or perhaps devolved?
@AspiringScoundrel Putrefaction is a state of decay usually accompanied by an offensive odor, most often used to describe the deterioration of an organism post mortem. Not only are you attempting to appear as erudite and instead reveal yourself as the failed pseudo-intellectual that you are, but not even *I* have been the places, met the faces, and read the pages which Hitchens has. Many humans glorify physical prowess; this man champions cognition.
@themediocrenontheist I apologise greatly, but not for my prior comment, and not to you - rather: for the fact that I am even replying to you (and to myself); the later part of your belated contribution was surely lacking in Truth, Isis, Osiris, and even grammatical comprehensibility. You have put the lie to your own existence, in addition to reinforcing my view that the major part of the widespread putrefaction that is the human race should be eradicated. To this shall I devote my life. IO
@AspiringScoundrel "To this shall I devote my life." An aspiring scoundrel, indeed. My mission in life is similar, yet different. May the best man win.
man i love both of these guys. this broadcaster is wonderfully creative with his questions. I really enjoyed this interview. and of course hitchens is hitchens, enough said.
@TAXtheAtheist Ah, you again. Nice name-calling, by the way. I'd ask that you Google search "Hierarchy of Argument" and look at the pyramid scale, in which name-calling is at the very bottom, whereas "effectively refuting the central point" is the tip of it. I'd adjust your approach accordingly, should you wish to be taken seriously in the future. Cheers to civil public discourse!
@themediocrenontheist Hitchens is a angry drunken secular jew. He facts are mere smear tactics against all religions. He'll take a muslim extremist that blows up a car bomb, an bundle every person of faith in the same realm.
@TAXtheAtheist Any person of an Abrahamic religion (Islam, Judaism, Judeo-Christianity) either is or has been in the realm of the car-bombers. I swear I've talked to you about this, but the Bible, Torah, and Qu'ran all have endorsed genocide, rape, slavery, sexism, incest, et cetera at some part in their history. If someone is religious and follows these books, they claim that such a book is the unfalsifiable word of God. If God endorses these things, God/men who made him is/are evil.
@themediocrenontheist That was in the Old Testm't. Their was good reason, as they were a society of cretins, and interbreeding with them would and did cause problems. However, no need for wiping out whole societies in this day and age. yay! But, in comparison so you don't think so ill of me- Mexico: Most Mexican folks are good people, however many innocent are butchered by the Cartel(s). These Cartels 'Need' to be slaughtered. No counciling, no 12 step programs, just need to be exterminated.
@TAXtheAtheist "If your own brother, son or daughter, beloved wife, or intimate friend entices you secretly to serve other gods...do not yield to him or listen to him, nor look with pity upon him, to spare or shield him, but kill him. Your hand shall be the first raised to slay him; the rest of the people shall join in with you. You shall stone him to death, because he sought to lead you astray from the Lord." - Deuteronomy 13:7-12, excerpted
@themediocrenontheist, yes, it does sound quite savage. However, no need for that today! Keep in mind what the world was like, small villages not much for resources. If the equivalent of something like the MS-13 gang of then were to influence the youth, It would destroy the small societies in a fast hurry. Not much room for that.
@TAXtheAtheist Again, I understand that one must at times fight fire with fire when pitted against evil, especially in "my ass or yours" situations. My gripe with this Biblical policy is that you seem to be viewing it as black or white: pious Jews following Yahweh at one end, and ruthless, barbaric thugs on the other end. However, this rule was invariably applied to any and all dissenters of Yahweh, including otherwise moral humanists who simply doubted the doctrine of Yahweh as I do.
I agree with you on the necessity of wiping evil (in the form of organized crime) out so that they may stop coercing the common people. My issue is with verses like that one from Deuteronomy. There are several like it, calling for the extermination of even kin and countrymen who do not submit to the rule of the Judeo-Christian God. Abraham would have killed his child for God's will, and Lot offered his daughters to the sex-crazed mobs in Sodom. These are not moral lessons.
No, but the limitation must be pointed out. I'm not a complete advocate of enviromental determinism, but one's geography (and within that, one's social positioning, one's socialization, etc) contributes a great deal to one's way of thinking. Had he been born in Saudi Arabia, he may well have been a Islamic thinker, in Nepal a Buddhist monk. People from secular societies like him, he fits into their way of thinking, and vice versa.
Everyone is born an Atheist!
