Prelude seems to set the dream stage of the games like you know you are set for a long ass adventure with lots of quest and characters to meet. It's so dreamy. That's why it's called Final Fantasy.

Each version takes the feeling of the game for sure. I think my favorite is IX's Prelude, but again I love all of them...

I always liked the BGM of the Crystal World in FF9. A macabre parody of the Prelude, as if to suggest that residing at the core of everything that has ever been or ever will be (that is, the Crystal), is something that dares to threaten its continued existence.

@Ocaisionallysane true,but you can have games change and still mantain their roots.look at the zelda series: every game has it's own feel to it yet it's still zelda at it's core. final fantasy 13 tried so much to innovate that it ended up not resembling the classics in the least.

There's two pieces that define music of Final Fantasy:

The Prelude and Final Fantasy.

It's a shame Final Fantasy is played so rarely in the games, I love that more than the Prelude.

Personally I think of all the "classic" preludes, V is the best because it's still fast and has a melody that sounds like an SNES orchestra.

Of the newer ones, I like IX.

For some reason I find it oddly interesting that IV's is the first in stereo sound. It's pretty fitting though since the game was made when stereo TVs were becoming a big norm. Anyway, IV's is my favorite out of all of these, and I haven't even played it yet!

To be honest, FF12 is the only one I've played so far. That's mainly because it's really my brother's game and I didn't really start to get serious with RPGs until about 2004. I do like FF12, but I plan on getting all of the older games.

I would like to add to my previous comment that I just bought FF6 today for the GBA (the reason I got FF6 first is because it's a rare find to find a copy of that game in my area). I got lucky too, I was practically stalking the GameStop website to see when any copies of the game would be available in my area, and lucky for me a copy just became available yesterday! I went down to GS and bought it for $21, and once I finish playing Golden Sun: The Lost Age I'm getting straight to FF6.

Since making my last comment I've actually managed to get FF 1-9 now. For 1 and 2 I got the Dawn of Souls versions since I just thought it was a more convenient package. I've started on FF7 first because it's just one game I want to get out of the way early so I can see if it's as good as people say it is. So far, I'm liking it. Afterwords I will get to the older games. FFIV is high on the list since I hear nothing but good things about it, and same with FF6.

The original Final Fantasy was too dull to spend more than 10 minutes on, and I never got my hands on any of the Japanese versions.

FF1 hands down. The originals are usually the best, IMO.

I agree...1 - X were the best. Turnbased is where it's at. FFXIII / Agito have some good expectations. But as far as FFXI and FFXIV go, MMOs just don't make a good Final Fantasy name.

To me, it's like making a generic MMO and slapping on the FF logo.

FFIV is by far my favorite prelude. It's so beautiful (especially the part at 2:50) and to think that it came out of the SNES is remarkable.

I was lucky enough to see this performed live by the Black Mages and it was just so incredible.

Though I think Square Enix might have just wanted to try something new. I mean they will most likely go back to the basic formula on the next one, but 13 was just a change of pace for them. To test maybe some new things out. I knew when I played it people where going to hate it. Oh well

When you got games like zelda and mario exclusively to your console then you got it made. lol I will say the older FF games are always going to be the best(1-9) but the new ones are probably going to change more because you have to admit. After 21 years of the original FF tunes and magics it maybe a good time to test new FF ideas. But I do hope the next FF has more of the original Prelude. Thats the main trade mark.
