Prelude seems to set the dream stage of the games like you know you are set for a long ass adventure with lots of quest and characters to meet. It's so dreamy. That's why it's called Final Fantasy.
I always liked the BGM of the Crystal World in FF9. A macabre parody of the Prelude, as if to suggest that residing at the core of everything that has ever been or ever will be (that is, the Crystal), is something that dares to threaten its continued existence.
@Ocaisionallysane true, but you can have games change and still mantain their roots.look at the zelda series: every game has it's own feel to it yet it's still zelda at it's core. final fantasy 13 tried so much to innovate that it ended up not resembling the classics in the least.
@KevinKishimoto Actually, that was the problem; too many original themes, and no FF themes. Really, you could rename the game National Lampoon's fal'Cie Vacation and no one would be the wiser.
@maggosh THANK YOU! you my friend are aweoseme! 13 is the most un-ff of all ffs, here's hoping that Tetsuya "Square's Pixar" Nomura gives us the real ff13 *thumbs up* :)
@maggosh Well thats ur opinion I guess, just as for me I like it to have original theme mix with new, that way it still brings the originality that Nobuo has for all these years.
kids like ps3 games like final fantasy XIII but they think that the final fantasy originals are "well old" for god sake they dont know what their missing...
For some reason I find it oddly interesting that IV's is the first in stereo sound. It's pretty fitting though since the game was made when stereo TVs were becoming a big norm. Anyway, IV's is my favorite out of all of these, and I haven't even played it yet!
To be honest, FF12 is the only one I've played so far. That's mainly because it's really my brother's game and I didn't really start to get serious with RPGs until about 2004. I do like FF12, but I plan on getting all of the older games.
I would like to add to my previous comment that I just bought FF6 today for the GBA (the reason I got FF6 first is because it's a rare find to find a copy of that game in my area). I got lucky too, I was practically stalking the GameStop website to see when any copies of the game would be available in my area, and lucky for me a copy just became available yesterday! I went down to GS and bought it for $21, and once I finish playing Golden Sun: The Lost Age I'm getting straight to FF6.
@BloodRedFox2008 This is what you should do in my opinion FF IV (my first RPG) FF VI FF VII (the reason this is not first is that before 7 you should have a thing to compare it to) FF V FF II FF VIII FF X FF IX FF III (not the DS version it stinks) FF I (its one of the hardest) PS FF I& II dawn of souls are really easy this is just a my opinion please do not say don't tell me how to live! oh and if you need help where to get the games just ask i can help
Since making my last comment I've actually managed to get FF 1-9 now. For 1 and 2 I got the Dawn of Souls versions since I just thought it was a more convenient package. I've started on FF7 first because it's just one game I want to get out of the way early so I can see if it's as good as people say it is. So far, I'm liking it. Afterwords I will get to the older games. FFIV is high on the list since I hear nothing but good things about it, and same with FF6.
I guess I do suck. But in my opinion, if the game isn't interesting or doesn't capture my attention, then why waste my time doing something I don't like?
FF1 hands down. The originals are usually the best, IMO.
I agree...1 - X were the best. Turnbased is where it's at. FFXIII / Agito have some good expectations. But as far as FFXI and FFXIV go, MMOs just don't make a good Final Fantasy name.
To me, it's like making a generic MMO and slapping on the FF logo.

Square-enix don't make good games,FFx-2 is a shit, dragon quest 8 is very infantil, and they lost the jugability from ff7,ff8,ff9,ffx ,rpg for turns and this make "final fantasy" the best game... but they lost the rpg for turns.....
@yoma6565 yeah well sorry to tell you but quite frankly, since that comment i've kinda changed my mind a little,i mean,i still love tetsuya "square's savior" nomura's games, and enix's games still rock, but ff13 was such a disappointment to me after the great ff12.of all ffs,13 is the one that tries the hardest to not feel like a final fantasy, there's the chocobos and...nothing else.there's no prelude no theme, the new victory fanfare is awful and the gameplay/story is so linear/boring.
@FFYears I can see that. FF13 was really different. But to me I liked 13 better than 12. But that is just my opinion. It had more than just chocobos but if you feel you didn't like it thats fine too. Though I think Square Enix might have just wanted to try something new. I mean they will most likely go back to the basic formula on the next one, but 13 was just a change of pace for them. To test maybe some new things out. I knew when I played it people where going to hate it. Oh well
@yoma6565 but couldn't they provide more throwbacks while trying those new things? 12 did that.it had the classic tunes, you could buy magic in shops but it had the license board and the gambits as new stuff.the ff13 theme is....ok,i guess, but the classic theme is way too superior, and you have to agree that the new victory fanfare is horrible, urgh.i guess only nintendo is the master of having a balance between innovation and throwbacks.
@FFYears True. Nintendo is the good with that kind of thing. When you got games like zelda and mario exclusively to your console then you got it made. lol I will say the older FF games are always going to be the best(1-9) but the new ones are probably going to change more because you have to admit. After 21 years of the original FF tunes and magics it maybe a good time to test new FF ideas. But I do hope the next FF has more of the original Prelude. Thats the main trade mark.
@yoma6565 If it hadn't been for the occasional name like Firega, and the characters looking utterly stupid and not acting at all like humans, and the occasional giant chicken, I would have had no idea it was a Final Fantasy game.
I think there's something unique about all of them, even without "symphonies" they had a really special touch to the old ones up to PSone that I'd almost prefer to hear more of sometimes.

The Prelude is the song that represents Final Fantasy to me. <3
Beatiful and mysterios, yet inspiring and meaningful, it makes me want the fantasy to never end...
Each version takes the feeling of the game for sure. I think my favorite is IX's Prelude, but again I love all of them...
