I'm no expert, but I think this is a superb performance.

I never knew she'd been a mezzo. Hard to believe, with the way she sounds here. What a wonderful change of direction she'd taken, since we all know and love her as a great soprano. I must say, though, her Elvira sounded much better at the Met later, if I remember correctly. Here I sense some insecurity. Maybe intentionally for the drama.

I've studied with the the past 4 years, she's an amazing teacher and a better singer.

I sang with Pat Schuman when she was a mezzo. She was knock out gorgeous. She was singing Carmen then and every man in the cast was in love with her. I sang Zuniga. Alas she was married - so I married the girl who was singing Micaela.

Around this same time a former girlfriend (who was also Domingo's squeeze) tried to fix me up with Carole Vaness. I went to dinner with her but left with my Micaela.

This all sounds fantastic as I read it now, but it's true. Opera gets the hormones raging.
