The tune wasn't composed for "Missouri Sky," but some time before. It's a Haden original. Haden does infact draw a lot of influence out of Brazilian music and old American standards, so the VIlla-Lobos influnece is a good call. Doesn't hurt that he's on acoustic either. The difference between Haden and Grenadier's playing on this tune is very striking, but you can tell Grenadier has taken on some influence from Haden, what contemporary upright player hasn't? - John
Check out the CD version and tell me if you don't agree that the first verse of Metheny's improvised solo isn't a melody so beautifully composed it surpasses the actual tune of the song!
@renanmusic It's a Charlie Haden tune called "Waltz for Ruth" from their duet album "Beyond the Missouri Sky." I see what you mean -- the tune has a Brazilian lilt, and the repetitive insistence of the descending melodic idea recalls the "Little Train" in its chugging motor. Also there's a four-note descending melodic phrase in the Villa-Lobos kind of similar to Haden's.
I don't understand how Metheney inverts so much in such an expensive guitar, that sounds lousier than my cheap godin. Or did the pa guys f*** it up? I love Metheney but sorry ....this one sounds horrible. As a listener I expect that the sound does justice to the music.
@ydnaguitars I think it sounds just awesome to his playing style. It sounds close to the eletric guitar sound Metheny has been famous and is is easiliy recognized by a single chord. If this guitar were in other hands obviously it would sound just different.
@basscape please tell me thats sarcasm, pat metheny has been playing since he was 12, and i think he wil know when his $36 000 Manzer guitar is out of tune.
@bassscape@bassscape i feel sorry for them too. they have paid for my college tuition, my $5000 bass, and all of my other bills in the past 3 years. they must all be nuts. i dont claim to be any kind of virtuoso in anyway, but you can both feel free to check myspace/jonstemmlerbass . not all of it is perfectly in tune, and i in no way claim it to be musical gold, but it's what i do. thats why we practice. feel free to bash it. i'd love to hear some recordings from you guys?
@Rexicano he has more musicality in on note than you could possibly ever express in your entire lifetime. winston churchill once said "it is better to remain quiet and feel as though people are thinking you are unintelligent, rather than opening your mouth and eliminating all doubt"
@Rexicano clearly my age and grammer reflect my musical ability. i could sit here all day and try and convince you otherwise, but it would be useless. you're right, i dont play guitar. i play upright bass...for a living. all im saying, is that without a doubt, pat metheny is 100% a better guitarst, better musician, and most likely (based on what ive seen so far) a better person. for you to call him out on RH technique is insane. how come no body's heard of rexicano..............?
@Rexicano im not saying im good in the least. remember, this all started with you bashing his RH technique, which is quite the cliche thing to bash. how about you transcribe some of his solo here. he's brilliant, and i was simply stating a fact....he's better at guitar than you. thats no insult, he just is, fact. i know hundreds of amazing guitarist, but none of them are better than metheny, and none would even think of claiming to be. metheny has accomplished more than most could dream of.
@jazzmelodicminor77 - while I will agree with you that Hekselman is really proficient at the guitar, he is not close to Metheny's understanding of soloing... let alone harmony and melody. Also, meter is everything as a guitarist. If you can't keep solid time WITHOUT a band or metronome, it doesn't matter how well you can play notes. Gilad is young. In time he may aquire this. But for now, watching Pat is like watching history. Incredible information coming from his fingers. With respect. :)
@jazzmelodicminor77 yes i have heard of gilad, he's great. i wasn't saying that metheny trumps all others. i was simply saying he's done more than most muscians would dream of. when it get's to this level of playing, there is no better or worse. just differences in taste and style

I can hear Villa Lobos's "Trenzinho Caipira" inspiring Metheny for this composition. Anybody else?

Metheny is the Kenny G of the acoustic guitar.
Horrible sound. Bad rh technique...so clumsy sounding.

@Rexicano His guitar is also terribly out of tune... man that's awful.

Wow, let's all listen to the 21 year old man of experience as he quotes...
Oh my God...it's good old Churchill! He MUST be a man of wisdom!
Eh, well, he's too lazy to bother with upper case letters...tsk...Sir Winston would not like that. Here's one of the Bulldog's quotes for you;
"It is a good thing for an uneducated man to read books of quotations."
Better stick to whatever it is you know because it isn't guitar.

And everyone's heard of you?
Right.
And you make up your mind having never heard me play so,
now I know you base your opinions on....nothing.
That's just what your opinion's worth; zero.
Your position;
"I play Bass —but I somehow know all about guitar technique.
You; insane...Me; always right no matter what. Oh, yeah, and you're a Bad person too."
Just listen to yourself! You sound like 12 not 21.
