and people need to learn how to have a bit of respect. this was recorded like 20 years ago. technique has come a long way since then, but the majority of professional dancers today have a thing or 2 to learn about performance quality. i mean, somebody was putting down baryshnikov in some other video. it's ridiculous. these dancers paved the way for ballet. they helped develop it into what it is today. respect should be given where it's due.
and at least she has a personality. not like some flexi machine. she just lights up the stage. everybody's so caught up in technique, it's said. ballet is not a circus where the dancers are supposed to perform tricks. people are so caught up in whose technique is better. but basically every dancer nowadays has serious over-split but only a tiny of fraction of them can really perform and exude that aura that many dancers in the past have. christine walsh is gorgeous. she IS aurora
i love christine walsh! she's so bright and charming. Stunning stage presence and energy.
can i just point out, BALLET ISN'T A BLOODY FREAK SHOW. it is not about how high you can get your legs. if you're going to get your legs behind your head, there needs to be a reason why you do it, not just because you can. it needs to be part of your interpretation. nowadays, it seems that people can get away with a COMPLETE absence of artistry because there legs are at some freakish angle. it's not right.
well, her turnout isn't the great est and she turns her foot in before she does her pirouette turn thingies from 0:30 to 0:40 but her expression, arms, and posture are wonderful and generally she's a joy to watch
I think she's an incredible Aurora. Her expressions are perfect, and I think even if every move isn't perfect perfect - it suits the playful and youthful nature of Aurora
She may be great to some but to the trained eye a lot of this video is painful to watch. Particularly 0:30-0:41. I don't think that it would be so uncomfortable to sit through if she just had one major problem. She has several though. A complete lack of turn out, poor flexibility and extension, and a disappointing pointe. She just isn't that good.
im 12 and my ballet teacher is YET TO PUT ME ON POINT. evn though i can stand on my toes and bourre in my converse and jazz shoes :( im hoping in december.
@mcrBallerina Excuse me little missy! But you don't deserve to be put en pointe if you are messing around like that. The problem might not be strength it could probably be lack of technique, or the fact you are still growing. Dance teachers know best!!! Just remember that!
i wish i sstayed in ballet becuza i started at 4 but quit at 6 i would have had my points now im 13 but now im singing acting and dancing but not ballet
Christine Walsh's perfomances in sleeping beauty and romeo and juliet are some of my favourites. Her perfomance here as aurora is one that I have watched many times. It is entrancing and adorable.
She is a very engaging Aurora! And she built her performance nicely. Starting with relatively low developpe turns. Later, very respectable penche arabesque. And then at the end, her extension was nice and high. Not as high as Balanchine would have liked--- where the ballerinas regularly displace their hips to kick their ears. Except in rare works of his, I always found that sort of thing vulgar. Stylistically, this young lady was very fine and of the highest order of good taste.
i think it's unfortunate that a lot of ballet watchers quickly become disinterested if someone doesn't have amazing extensions, turnout, and feet. while i certainly appreciate these things, just like everyone else, i also appreciate dancers who can be very charming without them. and this lady is very charming indeed. i think her port de bras is stunning and tended to distract from the shortcomings of her lower body.
Well said! I would rather watch dancers, fully extend and work with the facilities they have with lower legs and presenting and performing that throwing in tricks and turning ballet into a technical competition...technique and all, you can't tell a story through pirouettes alone ;)
very beautiful performance. In fact, i like all the Auroras, each one is unique. I don't know why people bitch all the time when posting comments in RG/WAG/Ballet videos.
i disagree! ahe is amazingly controlled and is just beautiful! this is the kind of ballet i fell in love with and wow how its changed....i love it and find it a pure example of the true classical ballet.
same, modern and contemporary ballets fascinate me to watch and how they move but you cant beat the classic classic classical ones with gorgeous music like tchaikovsky and prokofiev its b-e-a-uuuutiful :D
This is a very, very old performance. Like from the 1980s. The ballerina is Christine Walsh - the mother of rising Royal Ballet School star Benjamin Ella.
Christine Walsh is a lovely woman, but was never my favourite dancer. She came from the old-school style of teaching where you're taught to make your whole body tense. You can see it in the way she dances here.
she lacks fluidity and seems to hesitate before she turns and as a dancer she has to make it look effortless not like she is working hard at some points I see her not turned out and stiff as a board. She also does not go all the way to passe`
No, it wouldn't be 2005. Christine Walsh now has her own ballet school- Australian Conservatire of Ballet, is married and has a son who is at the Royal School in London doing ballet who is in his teenage years. It truly is stunning. The school just put on Swanlake (december 2007) and it was just stunning.
She was my examiner just a while ago. I didn't even know it was her til just now! AAHH!!! I met one of my fave ballerinas in person and I didn't even know it! LOL
It's quite impossible that you don't know the name of your examiner before she examines you. You're just saying that she's one of your faves coz you met her. If she's really your fave then you should've known that it was her (your fave) before the examination. Get my point? Just stressing a point here...

I love it when she throws the flowers at her parents' feet. Christine Walsh was just beautiful in this role. This production of SB is probably my favourite that I've ever seen. Might not have the perfection of more recent stagings, but there's just something about it... I've nearly worn out my VHS copy of this one lol.

@mcrBallerina maybe she won't put you on because you can't even spell 'en pointe'. Your teacher knows best, I didn't start pointe until age 15.
