I like Victorian Culture due to the Age of Enlightenment, Romantic era, etc. However I found the exploration of other "less advanced" cultures very offensive. In the warmer climates one is able to live of the means of the land, in colder climates resources are hard to come by, which is why societies in the North developed. Just an idea though. :)

@raysima Off the Veranda is a different movie from the 1980s. My Anthro teacher told me it's only on VHS at the moment. Off the Veranda is a little more to the point, none of the reenactments. But it does not mention Malinowski's journals at all, which paints a different side to him. (i.e. he's not so accepting of different cultures as he seemed.)

Malinowski me parece sin duda uno de los mejores etnografos de la historia, ya fuera por razones accidentales, (la antropologia acaso no es eso?) logro hacer un excelente trabajo de campo, pero claro, su diario nos dejo conocer las cosas que atraviesan al investigador, subjetividad que nos habia sido arrebatada por la ciencia en su afan objetivista, y que, gracias entre otros a él, estamos recuperando....alguien sabe si esta este documental en español? no entiendo muy bien....Gracias!

Many American anthropologists, especially feminists (who currently hijacked anthropology department), refused to use Malinowski's method because they call him a "racist" and "sexist" who impose "white men's science" to the "primitive societies".

As an anthropology student, I am very disappointed in current American anthropologists who only care about political interest and terminology rather than studying humankind.

Yes, I agree it's a shame. Malinowski's professional work in the Trobriands showed his readers that people in so-called 'primitive societies' were exactly like people in the West insofar as they were complex and self-interested. In doing so he de-exoticized the other while showing that much of what we took for granted as 'natural' was socially constructed. The unfortunate diatribes in his diaries, never meant to be published, have to be understood as acts of catharsis during stressful fieldwork.

You're welcome. I've done eight terms of fieldwork in places most people in North America or Europe would regard as 'exotic' and I know how stressful and frustrating this kind of work can be. Note that living in one place for some time is a completely different kind of experience to 'travelling'. Like most other anthropologists I know with this kind of experience I'm prepared to cut Malinowski a little slack for what he wrote in his diaries, viewing it as letting off steam.

bueno malinowski es todo un hito en la antropologia. eso de que escribia en su diario cosas que sentia, es normal, ya que el era una persona con una cosntruccion mental de su propia cultura y jusgaba segun eso. a las finale stodos los antropologos jusgamos asi, segun nuestra vision, pero lo que nos hace cientificos es que nos logramos despojar de eso para poder explicar.
