I was one of the audience in Brighton on their first night at the Theatre Royal on their tour. What a night, one which has had lasting impressions on me for more than 30 years. I visited South Africa because of that memory and had the opportunity to hear the songs played in the Cango Caves - Goosepimples everywhere on my body. An amazing collection of songs. David
@lod1993 ...I know exactly how you feel...I believe it was 1979/1980 I saw the show in London and I and two other friends had front row seats......everything about the show was electric....I have never visited South Africa but have friends there and many invitations to visit....so maybe one day I'll be lucky enough to go..
I saw this show in the 70s in London and was so impressed with it that it left a lasting impression on me...I especially remember the Gum Boot Dance and often tell my friends about it...it would be good if it were to be put on the road again for this generation to see it.....
@missdja1 I can't agree with you more. Two friends who were in the cast in the 80's, Thembi Nyandeni and Todd Twala who put their own show together which is very good as well, but not Ipi. It was well received, but in my humble opinion, it is carbon copy of Ipi, but different music. That said, I'm very proud of them and they are very successful with the show currently playing indefinitely, just outside Joburg at the Victory Dinner Theatre. The Gum Boot was one of my favorites too.
@rrsrichard ....I live in Jamaica so I'm not likely to be seeing it again unless a production comes to London when I'm over there but like you say it won't be Ipi. Some memories are better left as they were and not try to re-live them....the videos on Youtube are they from the original Ipi Tombi which went on tour in the 70s and 80s?
@missdja1 You are a wise lady. I agree, some memories are better left as they were and not try to re-live them. The videos on YT, are not of the original cast, that I was part of. I do know some of the older cast members, otherwise all new talent. I believe it was filmed in 1997 in South Africa. They did add extra songs and changed some original music. The tall girl, was the lead in Sarafina as well, which I saw in SA a few years back, at the Market Theater, in Joburg. Be well....
@rrsrichard ....you were in the original cast - did you come to London? If you were in the original cast which part did you play? how interesting......we will surely need to talk more...
@missdja1 sorry for the misunderstanding, I was not in the cast, I was behind the scenes, in production. I wish I could dance and sing like those beautiful dancers and singers. I did learn all the words and their dance steps, lol....
