I would like an all mahogany guitar. Since being given a Martin I'm completely converted. I thought I couldn't care about the make of a guitar but I'm a tested and tried type of person and I really like the Martin neck. So it's not about snob appeal, I'm just not very good at venturing out once I've found something I like. Same way with shoe brand. I thought I was going to be a Taylor loyalist. Still want to test some if I come to the U.S.
Not my intent to put down Martin guitars but most also like
Taylor are laminates until starting at least around $1600-$1800 prices...that is the low end of the upper high end of Martin and Taylor. If you can afford it, more power to you. But most of us can't and the lower ends of those brands only have a laminate side and back and truthfully don't sound any better than the other guitars I listed below. they only cost more. Would prefer American made but I have other bills to pay.
@Clayton19651 I own this guitar, and while I do absolutely LOVE the sound that flows out of it, I must say that I agree with you. I played one of the glossy mahogany Guild acoustics, and although it sounds a bit different, it sounds every bit as good as the D15. It's also about $500 less than what I payed for the Martin. Oh well, you live and you learn, right?
@HowlinJay I concurr. Great sounding guitars...all wood...for a lot less...best way to always go is choose a satin finish...not as polished in appearance but the "gloss" guitar will always mess up the sound of any wood guitar. They will also age better...gloss inhibits that and the natural wood from "speaking:". Great strumming .... love your guitar like your best friend...I do. :)
@HowlinJay i totally agree the guild gad25 is all mahogany, although made in china the quality is as good as a u.s model with grover machine heads and a classy tweed style case,i,ve had mine 2 years and its getting better every day
If I had the money I would love the Martin -D28; HD-28 or the D-35 but you need minimal $2400-$2900 for those guitars. This guitar has no better sound quality than other Takamines, Guilds for a lot less money. The one issue to keep in mind if if you trade in all the time than stick with Martins or Taylors however if you don't you have equal sound from a lot less expenisve guitars from Guild, Takamine, Washburn with all wood guitars that will still last a long time. Trade in I believe is issue
It sounds good but many other none Martins sound just as good and they have electronics to be heard on amps. Now you must invest another $xx amount to have it play on an amplifier unless that isn't an issue to anyone. Also plain/almost homely... I checked out this guitar too...if you don't need an amp and have no problem with the plain jane appearance this one if for you but outside of retail or trade in issues you can get equal/better sound quality of other lower priced guitars.
I just bought a D15M...same guitar with subtle differences: mahogany not sapele, nut and saddle are bone not micarta, rosette is inlay not a decal. It lists for $200 more than d15, but not much difference between sapele and mahogany. Installing a bone saddle is inexpensive and the rosette doesn't have much effect on the sound. Every piece of wood and every guitar has its own personality though.
Best guitar I've ever owned! To hear recordings of it make me shiver, the spectrum of tones is awesome. Typical Martin quality, I'll probably be buried with this in my hands!
not at all. I have one, bought it in early '06 and it's really quiet. A guy I know was playing a more expensive, thicker wood (the guitar is very light and very soft) Martin from across the street and I could hear it like it was right next to me. The D-15 can't do that. BUT it sounds amazing when finger picked.
I found one of these used at Guitar center for 649.00 plus tax. I didn't know it came with martin case too but it did. It just so happen that GC had sent me a 15% off coupon in the mail so I used that and got the guitar and case with tax for 598.00!
Its a 2000 model and needs a next and string adjustment but I would had to do that anyway great deal on sold wood. Sounds as good as my D28 for a fourth the cost.
Went to a guitarshop today but the D-15 wasn't in stock. Because I'm mainly a strummer, the guy of the shop told me a spruce top is better for strumming. So I tried the D-16GT, which was in stock. Also a great sound but I was wondering (maybe it was a sales trick) if it's true that a spruce top is better for strumming?
This is probably the best guitar for the money, you can pick a used one up for around $750. For all around playing it is a great guitar with the martin name.
I love the sound of this guitar .. I got mine for christmas . It looks very simple but once you start playing watch out ! What a warm nice sound ,im very pleased
bought this axe about 3 months ago. tried this and the J-15(samething only jumbo body style) the J was new the D was used but like new about $100 cheaper. both had really high action sounded amazing. bought the D despite really wanting the J at the time(these things are not cheap).the store lowered the action for free and now i am in love! i dont play in a band just at home and with friends so the not so great projection is ok for me. it makes up for it in tone and sustain. and tone and tone>>
just bought a newer one, with a spruce top, has thunderous sound, if anything, being a novice, this will give me some encouragement to practice, other guitars I have owned(in this price range) just haven't sounded good.
Good guitar for blues or fingerpicking blues .But unfortunately not even close, because of the top,to the bluegrass-flatpicking sound.I had one but sold it,i think it's too dark with not enough room and projection. If you're looking for more punch you have to search for another box!!
I have got to try one of these. I always see them at Guitar Center. I had no idea until I saw this review that these were solid wood. I thought that because there was no bracing it was part of the x series which are made of laminate. This guitar sounds very warm compared to my light sounding and overly bright seagull. Should I try for this if I want a guitar with more volume yet a darker warmer tone?
There has been some confusion on whether the guitar is solid Mahogany, but it is... top back and sides. For the sound you are looking for this is an ideal guitar. Also very comfortable to play.
@jugglerjoe I would say it would be a great guitar for what your looking for. I have a Seagull S6 Original and just ordered a D-15 that should be in Wednesday. I will do a comparison video of both guitars.
The most common combination is spruce top and mahogany back and sides. The less expensive models will have laminated tops and sides, where as usually for a bit more money you can get a solid spruce top. Check out some of our other videos like the Timberline T-85 AC, and Michael Kelly N2 for some comparisons.
this was a very good review and demo , no bullshit
