@1timothy215 To be fair, there's been a trend of directors hiring amateurs whenever they want someone obese, or strapping a fat suit on someone famous... And the director of Precious talks about that too, how he was looking for the lead "at MacDonald's"... As it were, he really lucked out with Gabourey auditioning, even though she was in fact an amateur (psychology major). Let's hope that inspires directors in the future to search for real acting talent.

wugufugu, rember she auditioned for the role. She is playing a part. Other than her size, she is not Precious, she plays Precious in a movie. It is no more an insult that it was an insult for Whoopie to play her role of a downtrodden black woman in The Color Purple. By your reasoning, any actor who is cast to play a role of an ugly person, or a retarded person, or anything less than perfect should be insulted to be typecast for the role.

I want to see her heart...but I have a feeling it's not going to last long under all that weight. I love that she's enjoying such incredible success, but we need to be honest about the health effects of obesity, not pretend that it doesn't matter. We need to treat each other well, and see the "person inside." But we also need to take care not to teach kids that it's okay to be obese. It isn't.
